AIM: To describe the ideas of Fourier transform, Fourier series and partial differential equations and indicate their applications in their respective engineering discipline. OBJECTIVES: To make the students to understand the concept of periodic function and represent them in Fourier series. To introduce the concepts of Fourier transform. To impart a knowledge to the students in partial differential equations. UNIT I LINEAR ALGEBRA 9+3 Vector spaces, subspaces, basis and dimension - Systems of linear equations, linear transformations - Kernel and Image - Geometric ideas - Inner product spaces - Orthogonality - Orthogonal basisReflections and Orthogonal maps of the plane - Orthogonal complements and Projections. UNIT II FOURIER SERIES 9+3 Fourier series Dirichlets conditions - Half range Fourier cosine and sine series - Parseval's identity Fourier series in complex form - Harmonic analysis. UNIT III FOURIER TRANSFORMS 9+3 Fourier transforms - Fourier cosine and sine transforms - inverse transforms - convolution theorem and Parseval's identity for Fourier transforms - Finite cosine and sine transforms. UNIT IV PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS 9+3 Formation of partial differential equations Lagranges linear equation Solutions of standard types of first order partial differential equations - Linear partial differential equations of second and higher order with constant coefficients. UNIT V APPLICATIONS OF PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION 9+3 Solutions of one dimensional wave equation One dimensional equation of heat conduction Steady state solution of two-dimensional equation of heat conduction (Insulated edges excluded) -Fourier series solutions in Cartesian coordinates.
