Share several books depicting castles. H Describe the product to be created as a castle made from single blocks and blocks-of10. H Explain that when they are finished building, they will pack all the blocks used in their castle. They will organize the packed blocks on their place value mat and set one digit card for each place value position. H Give the students a prescribed amount of time to create their castles.

Activity:
Partners will:
Work together to create a castle on the white mats (if available) or an open space. H Pack the blocks as much as possible to determine the number of blocks used in their castle. (Note: Students may want to have a record of their castle before they have to take it apart. Taking photos and making drawings before dismantling helps students feel comfortable about tearing their castle down in order to pack the blocks.) H Organize the blocks on a place value mat and set the digit cards to show the total number of blocks in their castle. H Record the blocks and digits for the total number on the activity sheet.

Bring students together as a whole group to discuss how to count the number of blocks used (a combined total of blocks-of-10 and single blocks).
