Notes on Using Digi-Block with Everyday Math

Connection In Lesson 8.3, students practice naming 3-digit numbers and making equivalent representations. A feature unique to Digi-Blocks is that equivalent representations do not require exchanges. The number does not change, nor do the blocks change, making the concept of equivalent representation more meaningful and thus easier to grasp. Materials for each pair of students single blocks, blocks-of-10, and blocks-of-100 1 place value mat Lesson Have each student or group of students start the lesson with 5 blocks-of-10 and 3 single blocks and a place value mat. Ask students to show 53 some other ways.

For the Naming Numbers Whole Class activity, display 2 blocks-of-100, 4 blocks-of-10, and 3 single blocks on the place value mat. Follow the rest of the lesson using Digi-Blocks instead of base-10 blocks and modifying the vocabulary accordingly. For the Making Exchanges Whole Class Activity, follow the lesson as it is outlined in the Teachers Guide, using Digi-Blocks. Students will pack and unpack blocks to show different representations of a number. This is a concrete introduction to regrouping not apparent with base-10 blocks. The consequence of these actions reinforces students understanding of regrouping in addition and subtraction. Students use Digi-Blocks and the Digi-Place Mat to complete Digi-Riddles activity sheet.
