Fourth
of July
festival
June 29
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Fourth of July celebrations
will be held on June 29 this year,
complete with a childrens area, a
beer garden and a fireworks dis-
play at Freedom Park.
The Medford Celebrates Foun-
dation raised funds for and organ-
ized the event.
Were hopeful were providing
something people find attractive
thats more than just fireworks,
said Bob Egan, president of the
non-profit Medford Celebrates
Foundation.
The organization began
preparing for this years festival
last year, saving and investing
money when the fireworks had
finished.
Last year, we were ahead of
the game, Egan said. We had
money in the bank, which gave us
a margin to start investing.

Community helps to
save one of their own
By NICK COHEN
The Medford Sun
Jim Johnson continues to
serve his community as a Mt.
Laurel firefighter. Now he is hop-
ing the community can help him
in the fight to save his wifes life.
Becky Johnson was diagnosed
with a rare disease of the pan-
creas in 2004 and has reached the
point now that an experimental
surgery may be the only thing left
to improve the quality and ulti-
mately save her life. For the John-
son family, this has been a dream
for more than 10 years.
In July 2002, after experiencing
consistent pain in her torso,
Becky had her gallbladder re-
moved.
Its not unusual for people to
have gallbladder issues so we did-
nt think it would be any issue
after it was removed, Jim said.
But when she experienced the
same sharp pain not too long
after her surgery, thats when we
knew something else had to be
wrong.
Months of tests and hospital
visits followed but no answers
were given to the Johnsons. With
more and more time, the condi-
tion worsened. Becky was hospi-
talized the day before her and
Jims wedding, but true to her na-
ture, she walked down the aisle.
She said I am not missing our
wedding, Jim said Shes a
fighter, just so strong, so the next
day she signed herself out of the
hospital and was at our wedding.
More doctor visits and testing
but still no answers. At that point,
her surgeon suggested an unlike-
ly source a rare disease called
Pancreas Divisum with Sphincter
of Oddi Dysfunction.
The surprise was her age. I
mean she was 23-24 years old
when she was diagnosed, Jim
said. The disease only affects
something like 1 percent of the
population and they are mostly
much, much older.
The disease cuts off the pan-
creatic ducts that release en-
zymes into the digestive system,
which causes severe pain and
chronic pancreatitis. The disease
is hereditary and many people

Kick off summer BBQ raises $10K
The Medford Education Foun-
dation hosted its Second Annual
Kick Off Summer Family Pool
Party and BBQ on Sunday, June
9 at the Flying W Resort on Foster-
town Road in Medford.
At this event, 600 parents, chil-
dren and educators from the ele-
mentary and middle schools in
the Medford Township Public
School District came together to
enjoy an afternoon of food, fun
and sun. The event raised more
than $10,000 in net profit for Med-
ford Township Public Schools.
The day was filled with sun, fun
and music.
Joseph Del Rossi, superintend-
ent of Medford Township Public
Schools; David Khanlian, teacher
at the Kirbys Mill Elementary
School; Chris Clarke, principal at
Allen Elementary School; Kath-
leen Gigantiello, RN, the school
nurse at Allen Elementary
School; and Peter Bisconte vice
principal at Memorial Middle
School each did a turn in the dunk
tank to help raise money for the
Medford Education Foundation.
Students from both the Memorial
Middle School Jazz Band and the
Haines Sixth Grade Center Jazz
Band, under the direction of Jim
Sheffer and members of the M-
Town Jazz Jam donated their mu-
sical talents and provided fabu-
lous entertainment throughout
the day. This event came togeth-
er with the support of our teach-
ers, our district families and
many local businesses, said Kris-
tine Adler, chairperson of the
event. The Flying W is a wonder-
ful venue and the staff of the Fly-
ing W generously supported both
the event and the mission of the
Medford Education Foundation,
ensuring a wonderful day.
The Medford Education Foun-
dation is a non-profit 501 (C) (3) en-
tity comprised of parents, busi-
ness owners and educators who
work to raise money in support of
the Medford Township Public
Schools. Anyone seeking more in-
formation about the Medford Edu-
cation Foundation, including
those interested in volunteering
or serving on the board, is encour-
aged to contact the foundation at

from around the nation and
abroad to attend the Naval Acade-
my Summer Seminar program
this year.
Summer Seminar is a fast-
paced leadership experience for
rising seniors in high school.
This program helps educate,

students who are considering ap-
plying for admission to USNA.
Julia DeSpirito, a student at
Shawnee High School, will par-
ticipate in the 2013 U.S. Naval
Academy Summer Seminar pro-
gram.
Summer Seminar teaches
prospective applicants about life
at the Naval Academy, where aca-
demics, athletics and profession-
al training are key elements in
developing our nation's leaders.
Each student will attend a six-
day session and experience a
glimpse of USNA life.
Students will have the opportu-
nity to live in Bancroft Hall, eat
in King Hall along with partici-
pating in academic and leader-
ship workshops.
They will also participate in
daily physical training involving
group runs and conditioning ex-
ercises.
They will experience first-
hand what the Naval Academy
has to offer through its excep-
tional academic, athletic, ex-
tracurricular activities and lead-
ership training programs.

I
f the only exposure you had to
New Jersey was what others said
or wrote about it, youd think it
was the worst place on the planet.
Scan the Internet just this week, and
youd find these stories:
Our governor called the authors of
a League of Municipalities report on
tax reform corrupt and labeled the
groups leader as a whiner.
A Little League coach in Newark
plead guilty in court to assaulting an
umpire because he wouldnt call a
game due to darkness.
A new report says that the Garden
State is the most expensive state to get
your car repaired.
A great white shark circled a boat
off the coast (not that this has much to
do with Jersey).
The greater public perception of
New Jersey is that it is a crowded, ex-
pensive state full of loud, obnoxious
people (thanks Real Housewives and
Jersey Shore) who think they are
better than everyone else (well, arent
we?). Our governor fits that mold per-
fectly, even as he is being mentioned as
a potential candidate for president of
the United States when the next elec-
tion comes around.
Heck, of the three professional
sports teams that are located in the
state, only one (the Devils) are
proud enough to label themselves
from New Jersey. The other two (the
Giants and Jets) act like theyre from
New York.
So why does anyone still live here?
Why are we doing this to ourselves?
Because, for those of us who live
here, who grew up here and are rais-
ing families here, we know the good-
ness that is here in New Jersey, even if
we recognize the bad. We love our
beaches, our mountains and our easy
access to major cities. We are proud of
our small, quaint towns, our history
and our top-notch schools, even if we
pay exorbitant prices to be here.
We are New Jersey, and well always
be New Jersey.
And we dont care what you think.
What are we still doing here?
With all the negativity about the state, why does anyone live in N.J.?
Your thoughts
Are you proud to be a New Jerseyan?
Let us know why you choose to call the
Garden State your home...and also what
youd like to see improve.
Celebrates Foundation staging
townships July 4 celebration
For the second year in a row, the all-vol-
unteer, non-profit Medford Celebrates
Foundation is staging Medford Townships
Independence Day Celebration and Fire-
works Display on June 29.
An important change this year is the
date, time and length of the event: Satur-
day, June 29, with a 2 p.m. start time.
In previous years, the fireworks were
held in the evening on July 3.
We made this change in order to provide
a bigger, all-day, family-oriented event fea-
turing childrens entertainment (starting
at 2 p.m.), a Kids Activity Zone, a ceremo-
ny honoring our military veterans (6 p.m.),
an expanded food court, extended beer gar-
den hours and many other additional at-
tractions.
Medford Celebrates is able to stage this
event due only to the generosity of our
sponsors (see [Link]/fire-
works/sponsors), private donors, and the
help and support we receive from our com-
munity and South Jersey residents.
Medford Celebrates operates specifical-
ly to raise funds to support the Medford
events that require municipal services.
These events bring crowds and positive
attention to Medford, as well as revenues
to the businesses that serve those who
visit.
Equally important, attending an event
like the fireworks becomes part of many
families annual traditions.
Medford Celebrates was founded in 2011
after the municipal funding for traditional
Medford community events became un-
available, which resulted in the fireworks
not being held in 2010 or 2011.
Last year, we successfully reinstated the
fireworks, and this year the fireworks will
go on as planned.
We understand that some Medford resi-
dents believe that tax revenues are used to
pay the expenses associated with hosting
the fireworks.
We want to clarify that the fireworks are
not funded by tax dollars.
Medford Celebrates raises all of its rev-
enues from tax-deductible contributions,
sponsors and fundraisers.
We then make a grant to Medford Town-
ship that covers all the expenses that the
township incurs for the event.
We understand residents feel differently
about funding the fireworks and other
community events some feel tax dollars
should cover the expenses, some feel other-
wise.
The reality is, across the nation, events
like ours are not being funded by tax rev-
enues.
For example, the fireworks at
McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst have been can-
celled this year due to funding shortfalls.
As a result, these types of events can
please see LETTER, page 7
continue only through the hard
work and donations of the public
and generous sponsors.
Hosting an event of this size
for tens of thousands of Medford
and South Jersey residents takes
a team of people and, frankly, our
team can use a few more players!
The tasks that must be com-
pleted before and on June 29 are
too many to be carried out by the
Medford Celebrates Trustees
alone.
We are asking our friends and
neighbors and our neighboring
towns residents to help with a
variety of light tasks on June 29.
In exchange, volunteers will
secure a fantastic fireworks view-
ing spot, good parking, a t-shirt
and a food and drink voucher.
Those who may be interested
can find out more about us and
volunteering by visiting
[Link],
emailing volunteers@medford-
[Link] or calling Dottie
Spellman at (609) 654-0563.
You may also contact me at
info@[Link], or
find us on Facebook at [Link]-
[Link]/medfordnjcelebrates.
We want the fireworks and
other renowned Medford events
to continue, so we keep working
but we need help.
If you can assist us, please vol-
unteer your time, make a dona-
tion and support our sponsors.
Please dont assume this event
or others will always just hap-
pen without volunteers, spon-
sors or public support. They sim-
ply will not.

A majority of the money comes
through business sponsorship, in-
cluding Zallies ShopRite and
Murphys.
Additionally, the foundation
charged vendors for a space at the
event, held fundraisers and ac-
cepted private donations through
PayPal. The foundation also sold
shirts and held a coin toss at in-
tersections. The foundation plans
to save the money from this years
beer garden, vendor fees and do-
nations.
We have been diligently work-
ing since the 2012 fireworks to
create a bigger and even better
event, said Beth Portocalis, Med-
ford Townships liaison, in a foun-
dation statement. The more we
talked about it, the more it just
made sense to move the date of
the fireworks to the preceding
Saturday so it could be an all-day
celebration involving the entire
Medford community as well as
those who come to Medford for
the celebration. Literally thou-
sands of people come to Medford
to see the fireworks, and now they
can make a day of it.
The most expensive purchase
is the fireworks, costing approxi-
mately $15,000, according to Egan.
Ultimately, were going to rely
on donations from the public,
Egan said. Were very apprecia-
tive of those who have [made a do-
nation].
Guests can expect musical en-
tertainment provided by a DJ and
Cherry Hills No Commitment.
The bands lead singer, Zachary
Birnbaum, successfully made it
to Hollywood on season 12 of
American Idol.
We were able to do the fire-
works last year, and we wanted to
expand it, Egan said. We want
to appeal to people of all ages.
The Independence Day celebra-
tion begins at 2 p.m. and will run
until 10 p.m., including the fire-
works display, at Freedom Park.
There is no cost to attend the
event, however vendors will be
charging for food and drinks.
Were working harder than
we ever thought, Egan said.
Were hopeful for a successful
event everyone is excited about.

police report
The following reports are on
file with the Medford Township
Police Department:
Police in Medford Township
and Franklin Township have
charged a male, 41, of the 600
block of Riviera Drive in
Williamstown and a female, 28, of
Lamont Court in Sicklerville
with multiple residential burgla-
ries that occurred between May
24 and June 1.
The investigation revealed that
in each case, the suspects were
checking obituaries in the news-
paper.
They would then find the ad-
dress of the deceased person in
the white pages and burglarize
the homes while family and
friends were attending the funer-
al.
Police charged the suspects
after a search warrant was exe-
cuted at the males residence and
on his vehicle.
Police were able to locate a
stolen shotgun and rifle from the
burglary in Franklin Township
as well as jewelry and other items
that were proceeds from burgla-
ries in Medford Township.
The suspects were charged
with burglarizing a residence on
Old Marlton Pike on May 24 and a
residence on Tallowood Drive on
May 31 in Medford Township.
The male has also been
charged with a burglary on Mor-
ris Avenue on June 1 in Franklin
Township.
The suspects have been
charged in Medford Township
with two counts of burglary, two
counts of theft, one count of
criminal mischief and one count
of possession of a handgun.
Both subjects bails were set at
$202,500 full cash by Municipal
Court Judge Peter Lange.
The male suspect has been
charged in Franklin Township
with burglary, theft, criminal mis-
chief, trespassing, possession of a
weapon and certain persons pos-
sessing weapons. Municipal
Court Judge Joan Sorbello-
Adams set additional bail at
$50,000. He is currently lodged in
the Gloucester County Jail.
The female suspect is a wanted
person. Anyone with informa-
tion pertaining to the where-
abouts of the female is asked to
contact the Medford Township
Criminal Investigations Bureau.
Assisting with the investiga-
tion were members of the
Franklin Township, Medford
Township, Monroe Township and
Pitman Police Departments.

have a strain of it; however it re-
mains dormant. Doctors have
found that removing the gallblad-
der may trigger the disease.
Local doctors originally gave
Becky five to seven years to live
and that it wouldnt be a good
quality of life, Jim said. Im a
stubborn guy and that was not an
acceptable answer.
After researching and digging,
they were referred to a doctor at
Johns Hopkins University who
was having success in placing
stents in the pancreatic ducts. At
the time, those stents were ex-
tremely short term and could
only be in the ducts for 72 hours.
The intent is for the body to begin
forming scar tissue and make the
ducts remain open.
The same doctor eventually
moved to another Baltimore hos-
pital and became a leading sur-
geon in its digestive health and
liver disease department. He told
the Johnsons about a stent that
could stay in the body for up to
four months, allowing the ducts
to remain open with assistance.
This was a great solution at
the time, Jim said. This way
Becky could be home for 10-12
weeks, be with our sons, at least
get the chance to be a regular
mom.
That was in 2004. Now, Becky
has been through more than 50
procedures.
Just from the emotional
standpoint, it is incredibly diffi-
cult. Every three months or so, we
have to tell our kids that mommy
is going away for a week, maybe
two, but shell be back, Jim said.
Its a strain on her, and its a
strain on our kids.
Cael, 9, and Kase, 3, have grown
up only knowing this way of life.
The unusual has been forced
to become a routine for them. Its
an emotional struggle for them
that I cant even imagine, Jim
said. Theyre amazing in dealing
with it. They know when she has
to rest and when she has to leave
but of course they miss their
mother.
Jim was quick to say this
would be impossible without the
help of both his and Beckys par-
ents, and that, when Becky is
home, she is as helpful as she
physically can be.
She has good days and bad
days, Jim said. Shes not able to
work but shell get the kids ready
for school and ready for bed, a
very typical mom relationship.
The routine of Becky leaving
every few months for procedures
may be ending. Now she has
reached a point where the stents
are not working as well and, with
that, surgeries are required more
often.
We said after her last proce-
dure in March that something
else has to be done, Jim said.
Jim researched as much as he
could online and found a fairly
new procedure. Beckys pancreas
as well as her spleen would be re-
moved. Doctors would then har-
vest the auto islet cells from her
pancreas and re-inject them into
her liver. The hope is that, with
continued medication, this would
stop Beckys pain and prevent her
from becoming diabetic.
In doing his research, Jim
found that The University of Min-
nesota in Minneapolis has suc-
cessfully completed more than
400 of these procedures and their
success rate and post-op care are
second to none. All good news,
but the bad news is the operation
itself can cost $300,000, and Jims
health insurance provider has re-
fused to pay because it is an out-
of-network hospital.
Jim is working with a special-
ist to appeal the decision but he is
also ready to raise the money if
he has to. The Johnsons have re-
ceived slightly used home goods
from people to sell at auction or
yard sales. Including items sold
and other cash donations, they
have already raised $12,000.
I cannot say enough about our
community, Jim said of their
hometown in Medford Lakes. Be-
tween the Mt. Laurel Fire Depart-
ment and people at home, the re-
sponse has been absolutely
tremendous.
The plan is to host a variety of
events in the future. The first was
a special night at PJ Whelihans in
Medford Lakes on June 12. Sup-
port wristbands are also being
sold for $5.
If this is what it takes to give
my wife a better life, Im ready to
do it, Jim said. Whatever it
takes.

coming events or how to donate,
