Jaffna: A Glimpse into Tamil Heritage

Jaffna is the capital city of Jaffna district in northern Sri Lanka. It has a long history as the center of the Tamil kingdom of Nallur. Typical scenes in Jaffna include people bicycling home with goods and historic houses with carved details. The city is located on a peninsula between the Jaffna Lagoon and the Indian Ocean. It has a dispersed settlement pattern and is an important transportation hub that connects the peninsula. Agriculture, fishing, and government/social services are the main land uses. Jaffna town

Jaffna, in other word yalpanam or in ancient time, dambakola patuna is the capital city of Jaffna district. We can say Jaffna stands as clear evidence of the Tamil kingdom of Nallur. Typical Jaffna scenes include people bicycling home with bananas and firewood on the back of their bicycles and majestic old houses adorned with carved roundels, grand porches and beautiful doors and windows. The Jaffna Town lies in the Southern part of Jaffna Peninsula between 90 38 North and 90 42 North and between 790 59 East and 800 3 East.When consider about Jaffna towns relative location, we can see in the poster that the western and southern part is surrounded by Jaffna lagoon,in eastern side is 6 km away from point pedro.other two parts are away from Kankasanthurai and elephantpass.The distance between Jaffna and Colombo is 305kms.The area of the Town is about 20.20 Square Km and the town is longer in the East West direction measuring a maximum of 6 Km in length and its width varies from 8.5 to 4.0 Km. When we consider about site and situation of Jaffna, In Jaffna fort there is a defence site.It is surrounded by a canal and by the sea.So, it gives a good view in case of attack.And also Jaffna is a route center.It connects main A9 road and some AB, B roads.Jaffna gives more accessibility in transport to the upper part of Jaffna peninsula.In Jaffana,people tends to fishing because one side is surrounded by a logoon.So, people gather Jaffna because of that.In Jaffna town, there are no mountains and natural stream.Jaffna people use groun water for their uses. The climate of Jaffna is determined by the monsoon that forms a wet and dry season. The major rainy season occurs during the North East monsoons from October to December and the minor rainy season occurs during the South West monsoon in April and May.There is the highest tempreture in Sri Lanka.In poster we are included the annual rain and the average temprture. In below part of the poster, you can see 4 maps that are numbered.In these for maps we tried to show the distribution paterns of human settlements in Jaffna.Mostly, In Jaffna we can see despresed paterns.There are no proper order and also every where, there is houses.But, aw show in 1st picture, the east part of the Jaffna fort is showed.In that area we can see special feature because there is artificial settlement construction.All of us know that, there was a war in Jaffna.After get peace, ther wae rehabilitation program.In that time government constructed houses in grid system.Other 3 pictures show left, upper left and right side with respect to Jaffna fort.All of 3 areas have dispersed pattern. Mostly, Jaffna towns land uses as residential puroses.Rest of that use for agricultural, commercial, social and transport purposes.In left side map, we showed government buildings, scholls, temples and kovils.The military conflict has inflicted heavy damage to the vegetation cover of the city. Specially Palmyras and Palm trees have been extensively used as building material for bunkers, sheds, fences and have been cleared for mine fields. In general, in the Jaffna peninsula the land use for agricultural purposes, for crops like paddy, Vegetables, fruits, coconut and Palmyra.
