Living the Story with Pastor Jeni
with that death. A little morbid, and yet, strangely, powerfully hopeful. St. Paul writes in Romans 6 that we when we were baptized, we were baptized into Christs death, and buried with him. But just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we are raised to live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be reunited with him in a resurrection like his. At the cemetery, the place of rest for our dead ones, the feet point east. Towards Jerusalem. Towards the sunrise. So that when the resurrection happens, we are ready to stand up and face the Son, Jesus, our Savior. We are marked with crosses, marked with death, and yet alive. Death does sting, but death has no power over us. God holds the final word, and God whispers, life. And so we can enter places of death and know that death does not remain, death does not hold us forever. Even as we make our way to the grave, our song is alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, for the cross of Christ has been traced over us, blessed us, and will keep us in this life and the next. May the cross of Christ give you hope and sustain you in peace, Pastor Jeni
e come across many crosses in our life. Most we encounter as jewelry or adornments for a place of worship. Sometimes we see them in nature, like when two twigs fall to the earth and land (or are placed) in a cross pattern. On Sundays I trace the sign of the cross on the foreheads of children who are not yet taking Communion. It is a blessing, a sign that hails back to their baptism when the pastor said, Child of God, you have been marked with the Cross of Christ and sealed with the Holy Spirit forever. Its amazing to see children go to the font, take some water on their fingers and trace the sign of the cross. We trace that baptismal cross in ash on Ash Wednesday, at the start of Lent, noting that we have come from the dust and to dust we will return. Words that we hear at a loved ones graveside when we commit them to the ground. Today I was at a graveside for one of GLCs oldest lifelong members. The funeral home was out of dust to pour upon the casket (as is customary), so I took dirt from a planter and made the sign of the cross on the casket: ashes to ashes, dust to dust We are marked with crosses. That is, we are marked with the death of Jesus. However much we dress it up, Jesus died on the cross, and we are marked
Over Coffee with Kris
t is the time of year for Graduation Open Houses, putting docks into the water (now that the ice is finally gone) and hopefully a bit of a slowing down. I would like to share with you this prayer from Guerillas of Grace for the summer. O God, enable me now to grow wise through reflection, peaceful through the song of the cricket, recreated through the laughter of play. Most of all, Lord, let me live easily and grace-fully for a spell, so that I may see other souls deeply, share in a silence unhurried, listen to the sound of sunlight and shadows, explore barefoot the land of forgotten dreams and shy hopes. Amen. Blessings on the rest of your day, Kris
Let me live grace-fully
Thank you, Lord, for this season of sun and slow motion, of games and porch sitting, of picnics and light green fireflies, on heavy purple evenings; and praise for slight breezes. It is good God, as the first long days of your creation. Let this season be for me a time of gathering together the pieces into which my busyness has broken me.

Please keep Trisha Baker (Afghanistan), Kally Anderson (United States) and Tyler Payla (returned from Kuwait) in your prayers as they serve their country.
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in trials and temptations; give courage to face perils that surround them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
