Not pictured: Melinda Slusser, Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities. BY DONNA LUEKE Wednesday evening, May 15, Leadership Ottawa County (LOC) class of 2013 held graduation ceremonies at the Catawba Island Club. The mission of Leadership Ottawa County is to develop, strengthen and enrich leaders for Ottawa County through an excellent leadership program. Each year the LOC class completes a community services project. The 2013 class completed two projects, both of which will benefit Ottawa County well into the future. The first project is being implemented this week. There are two forums being led by Judge Bruce Winters, one at Genoa Library and the second at Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton, addressing the need for transitional housing for men recovering from dependency issues. 80 % of the court cases that come before Winters involve drugs, often prescription drugs, and 80% of those are repeat offenders. Typically after 6-8 months in prison and another six months in rehabilitation treatment, the individual still has a need for at least another six months to recover from drug dependency. The objective of the LOC project is to establish a voluntary, holistic, sober program with halfway house, nutrition and wellness classes, GED programs and mentors, that will be operational within 12 months. The second project, The Welcome Doors of Ottawa County, has been in place since the first of May and now features a website with an interactive map and brochures that are being distributed at various sites throughout the county. The Welcome Doors, based on the fairy doors of Ann Arbor, MI, are now in place at 47 businesses throughout the County and encourage travel and exploration throughout the county. For more information, [Link] or on facebook. LOC is currently accepting applicants for the class of 2014. To obtain an application, contact Sheila Powell at 419-366-7420 or leadershipottawacounty@[Link] or find an application at [Link]. The deadline for registration is August 1.

Harbor Island Homeowners Association becomes a United Way Caring Giving Community
At their annual meeting on Saturday, May 18, Harbor Island Homeowners Association became the first long-time established homeowners association in Ottawa County to be a United Way Caring Giving Community (CGC). They will join other associations who became Caring Giving Communities at the time their development was initiated. The first CGC, Catawba Bay Development, was recognized in April by Ohio United Way at their 100th anniversary celebration as one of 100 community heroes for creating this novel approach to allowing residents to make a commitment to change lives in their communities. Harbor Island charted a new course by being the first existing association to choose to do this. The members voted to request a partnership with United Way and some members wrote checks on the [Link] Island Association members will make a voluntary contribution to United Way annually. Being a United Way Caring Giving Community entails making a commitment to help change lives in our community. The commitment involves making a predetermined and agreed upon donation to United Way from each member of the homeowners association. As a United Way Caring Giving Community, Harbor Island demonstrates homeowners care about the community and the people who live here. United Way recognizes this commitment and will designate Harbor Island Homeowners Association as a Caring Giving Community with permission to use the United Way logo and the Caring Giving Community designation in signage and promotional materials. United Way in Ottawa County changes lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community. United Way is focused on the building blocks for a good life: education, income, and health. Starting at the root, United Way addresses the circumstances that destabilize communities. United Way recruits people and organizations who bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done. You can give, you can advocate, and you can volunteer thats how to LIVE UNITED. Red Cross offers ways to help those affected by the Oklahoma tornado
The American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio offers their thoughts and concern to everyone in Oklahoma following the horrific tornado early this week. We are working around the clock to provide food and shelter to all those whose lives were affected by these storms. Red Cross disaster services volunteers and staff throughout the country are responding to the area, assessing damages, providing food and supplies to first responders, and support to the people affected by the storm. More than 25 emergency response vehicles are on their way to the area from all over the country, and we expect that the number will increase. The Red Cross is also sending in kitchen support trailers to support the upcoming operation to provide meals to those forced out of their homes. The local American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio is offering the following ways people can help: Thursday, May 23, at 6 p.m. for community members interested in volunteering to assist those affected by a disaster in Northwest Ohio and around the country. Participants will learn the processes and procedures involved for disaster services volunteering including local, regional, and national responses. Following the session, interested parties will receive further volunteer information and background checks before registering for operational training. Tornado App
People should download the free Red Cross Tornado App, available in English or Spanish for all Apple and Android devices. The app allows individuals to prepare for a tornado by testing their skills, offers best practice and tips to respond during a tornado, a list of open shelters during a tornado, and much more. The app also features a highpitched siren and tornado warning alert that signals the user when a tornado warning has been issued regardless if the app is open. People can call **REDCROSS to receive a download link to their mobile phone.

Informational Session
This has been a major disaster, and the Red Cross will be there for the people in Oklahoma and their local community. People who wish to make a donation to support the Red Cross response can visit [Link], dial 1-800-REDCROSS or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
People with loved ones in the areas affected by the tornado are encouraged to search for them at [Link]/ safeandwell. The site is available for people in the areas affected by the storm to let loved ones know that they are safe. Its important during a disaster that victims of the storm let family and friends know they are safe which can bring others great peace of mind.

Dear Port Clinton residents and city leaders, A letter in last weeks Beacon by the City of Port Clinton Review Committee asked the question: Ever been promised a gift and then told how you have to use it? If were talking about a birthday present, the answer is probably no. But if youre a city official, the answer is more likely a resounding yes! Let me explain. In 2010 marina owner Darrell Brand decided to gift the old Port Clinton Lighthouse to the city so that it would be preserved for future generations to enjoy and be an economic beacon for his city. Wisely, he attached some conditions to that gift because he knew that if he didnt city leaders at some future time could move, sell, modify, or destroy it at their whim. Unwisely, the city has been telling Mr. Brand and the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy, which has been acting on his behalf, that it would not accept this gift with strings attached and has expressed surprise at the notion of conditions being placed upon its transfer. But a cursory glance at other such gifts reveals that such strings are

Everyone that fishes this lake on a regular basis has their fingers crossed in the hope that the 2013 walleye hatch will survive this season. There really hasnt been a big blow to speak of since this last spawn, so there is a chance that there will be a plethora of new fish entering the system. And with walleye population numbers down from years past, that would be a good thing. Fishing this past weekend was productive for some, while others struggled to catch their limits. Captain Keith Unkefer, owner of Pooh Bear Charters is running 40 Tru-Trips back 45-50 feet with Scorpion Spoons off of a mast style set of planer boards at 1.5-1.8 mph and is having excellent success. You can hear Pooh Bear on the radio throughout the day letting everyone know what is working. If you dont understand what is being said in fishermans lingo, just get on the radio and ask. There are a lot of anglers out there that will help you understand. Others, like me, are running crawler harnesses with 1 and 2 ounce inline weights, Tadpoles, or Snap-Weights behind Off Shore Tackle inline planer boards at 1.0-1.2 mph with similar success. Color of blades used on the harnesses has been changing from day to day, or even hour to hour, depending on whether its cloudy or sunny out, so its good to have a broad selection of color blades to choose from. Jigging is still fair to good on the reef complex using hair jigs. These jigs can be used plain or with shiners, a hunk of crawler, or a manufactured plastic tail with a stinger hook. Anglers who like to drift and cast are also doing well in and around the reefs casting Weapons, which is a short version of a crawler harness that is weighted with an egg sinker and tipped with a hunk of crawler and cast out and retrieved. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@[Link], or by phone at 419835-7347. Her website address is [Link].
