When the first PS Series array member is initialized and added to the group, it is added to the default pool pool. If it is added using the CLI, then a RAID type must also be applied to the array before any capacity is allocated to the group. At the time the member is initialized, none of the available storage capacity of that member is allocated to the group/pool because a RAID level has not been applied to the new member. Once the RAID has been specified, p the new members storage g capacity p y will be allocated to the pool it was added to. A single pool can have multiple members in the pool. Each member have a different RAID type as shown in the diagram. You can have a PS3600 10k rpm as a RAID 50 and a PS3800 15k rpm as a RAID 10 and a PS300 as a RAID 5 all within the same pool. The volumes will move to the appropriate member based on I/O characteristics.
A second member can be added to the existing pool or to a new pool.
If you have multiple members with different RAID types within a single pool: Volumes will move automatically between members based on the I/O characteristics of the volume. When the volume preference is set to automatic the volume will be monitored, which may result in the volume being moved between members of different RAID types within a pool/ group. Volumes can be associated with a particular member, based on RAID type, using the setting volume preference on the volume to the desired RAID type.

Tiering storage with multiple pools allows: Separation of storage based on customer requirements Control of separate storage Appearance similar to virtual SAN islands Volumes from using available capacity in another pool. A volume is restricted to the pool it resides in. Automatic movement of volume using volume preferences. This only happens within a pool l and d not t between b t pools. l When the array is added, it can be added to an existing pool or to a new pool
Tiering storage with multiple pools prevents:
PS Series arrays are added to the group and to a pool Pools can be merged starting with firmware version 3.2.x. Prior to this version, pool merging was manual.

Snapshot overview Snapshots enable you to capture the contents of a volume at a specific point in time and can be used for back-ups or testing Snapshot creation does not disrupt access to the volume Like volumes, snapshots appear on the network as iSCSI targets and can be set online and accessed by hosts with iSCSI initiators You can also restore a volume from a snapshot or clone a snapshot and create a new volume You can create a snapshot of a volume at the current time time, or you can set up schedules to automatically create a snapshot at a specific time in the future or on a regular basis Fast creation Synchronized across PS Series Group Distributed snapshot Follows the same distribution of the base volume Copy Original data before write (COW) Tracked T k d at t page level; l l f facilitates ilit t d data t movement t of f pages Tracked at 64kb increments within a page on initial allocation Unmodified pages are shared between volume and snapshots Deletion Rollback Regular volume is replaced by the snapshot Original g volume is preserved as a snapshot Snapshot still exists

Easy configuration and monitoring By configuring two separate PS Series groups as replication partners, volume data can be automatically replicated (copied) across storage management groups. Replicas are similar to snapshots in that they represent the contents of the volume at a specific point in time. The replica volume (not visible to the user, but equivalent to the most recently p replica) p ) ensures that the secondary yg group p always y p preserves a completed complete, stable copy of the volume data. This is the key goal of EqualLogic replication technology. Replication process The first replication is a complete volume data transfer. After the second replication finishes (only the changed volume data is transferred), it becomes the most recently completed replica. Now, the replica volume is formed from the first replica and the changed Now data from the second replica. As additional replicas are created, this process is repeated.
The replica set includes all the completed replicas for a volume
Fast Replica Failback Allows for replication failback in the event that the primary site has failed. In the event that the replication partnership is over a slow data link, this option provides a mechanism h i t to save th the i initial iti l replica li image i to t external t l media, di physically h i ll ship hi it t to th the remote site, and restore the image from the external media. The Manual Transfer Wizard is used to copy only non-zero data to external media. Replication Slow Link Support:

Collections allow you to group related volumes to provide point-in-time copies of all volumes within ithi th the same collection ll ti at t the th same time. ti This allows you to create a snapshot of 2 or more related volumes at the same time by placing them in the same collection. This allows you to create a replica of 2 or more related volumes at the same time by placing them in the same collection. A volume can exist in multiple collections at the same time: y exist in a Under normal circumstances it is recommended that a volume only single collection. Be cautious with this because it can result in volumes that are out of sync. Heres an example: Collection one contains two volumes: DBvol-1 and Log-vol1 Collection two contains three volumes: mail_store-1, mail_store-2 and Log-vol1 Snapshot of Collection Collection two two is performed at 1:00 Snapshot of Collection one is performed at 1:10 You do a recover of your database and use the snapshot of Log-vol1 to rebuild your database. If you use the snapshot taken with the 1:00 snapshot, it could result in rebuild issues.
