has ruled. New Delhi: Adulteration of food is a menace to the society and the perpetrators cannot be let off lightly, the Supreme Court has ruled, upholding a one year imprisonment imposed on a trader accused of unauthorised sale of kerosene. Citing its earlier observation in the Issar Das v State of Punjab(1972) case, the apex court said, "adulteration of food is a menace to public health and the statute had been enacted with the aim of eradicating that anti-social evils and for ensuring purity in the articles of food." A bench of justices B S Chauhan and J S Khehar refused to entertain the plea of the convict Sunil Kumar that he may be let off under the Probationers of Offenders Act, but instead castigated him for abusing the process of law by filing repeated petitions despite his conviction being sustained by the apex court on July 30, 2010.

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh reported the maximum number of food adulteration in the country, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Tuesday adding that the country's average adulteration stood at 11.14 percent. Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Azad said that in 2010, about 3,789 cases were filed in Uttar Pradesh and 540 people were convicted. With 806 cases and 18 convictions, Rajasthan came in second followed by Gujarat with 683 registered cases and 99 convictions. 'The average adulteration in food items including milk products on the basis of samples collected in 2009 is 11.14 percent,' said Azad. Considering the need for comprehensive approach to food safety, a new law- Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 came into force Aug 5, 2011 replacing the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954.

Of the 71 samples randomly taken from Delhi for testing by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), 50 were found to be contaminated with glucose and skim milk powder (SMP), which is usually added to milk in the lean season to enhance volumes.
Last week, the Punjab Department of Health and Family Welfare seized 2,000 litres of synthetic milk in Patiala. In Chandigarh, the administration has so far destroyed 30 tonnes of sweets in the past week 30 tonnes means 30,000 dibbas of one kilo each. These are not isolated events. Local newspapers are awash with reports of adulterated sweets and dry fruits, and also have been carrying features on the unhygienic conditions in which the prolific sweet industry operates. Not only Punjab, everywhere across the country today food adulteration has become one of the biggest proliferating industry.
