Celebrating a Risen Saviour on Resurrection Sunday
Easter is one of the most celebrated Sundays in Bible-believing churches. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible records how Jesus was resurrected on the first day of the week, Sunday (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2,9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1, 19). For born-again believers, the resurrection supports Jesus claim that He had the authority to die for the sins of the world, and the power to come back to life again. The good news of Jesus death, burial, and resurrection is known as the gospel. Although the events preceding Jesus crucifixion and His suffering on the cross were immensely brutal, it is good news because sinners now have a remedy for their sin debt. Sinners have a Saviour in Jesus Christ! His resurrection gives hope to born-again believers that they too will experience a resurrected life in heaven. While it is appropriate for Jesus' resurrection to be celebrated on a Sunday, the origins of Easter have nothing to do with Jesus' resurrection on a Sunday. The term, Easter, is only found once in the Bible (Acts 12:4), but it is a reference to the events of Passover, and not the traditions of Easter. The term, Easter, has its origins in pagan lore, and is connected with a pagan goddess associated with fertility and spring. People without a Biblical worldview have always got excited about spring because they saw the sun increasing in power, animals mating, and plant life reviving. Biblically speaking, there is no connection between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the modern traditions (Easter bunny, Easter eggs, etc.) related to Easter Sunday. Easter had long been known to be a pagan festival, and so when the Puritans came to North America, they regarded the celebration of Easter with suspicion. It appears that for the first two hundred years of European life in North America, only a few states, mostly in the South, paid much attention to Easter. It wasnt until after the Civil War that Americans began celebrating this holiday. Easter became an American tradition in the 1870s. History seems to indicate that Christianity adapted these traditions to the celebration of Jesus resurrection in an effort to make Christianity more attractive to non-Christians. And while Easter has its origins in pagan lore, the miracle of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a fundamental teaching to Biblical Christianity. The importance of Christs resurrection is conveyed when the Apostle Paul wrote in I Corinthians 15:13-17, But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised up, if so be that the dead rise Soul Winning On Saturdays not not.
