D.O. Toro
The Denomination
of Origin Toro is located in Castilla y Leon, southeast of the province of Zamora, with an area of 5,500 hectares of vineyard. The area is characterized by extreme continental climate with Atlantic influences, arid character.
The cold winters and long hours of sunshine are excellent conditions for the successful development of the grape.
The soil, consisting of sandstones, clays and limestone is ideal for the cultivation of native varieties. The grape varieties are authorized: Tinta de Toro, Garnacha, Verdejo and Malvasia.
100% Tinta de Toro grapes
The red wines are predominantly made with 100% Tinta de Toro grapes. There are several types of reds: Young. Roble a young red aged between three and six months (can contain some Garnacha). Crianza aged for at least two years, of which at least six months in oak barrel. Reserva aged for at least three years, of which one year in oak barrel. Gran Reserva: aged for at least five years, of which two years in oak barrel. The ros wines are made from 50% Tinta de Toro and 50% Garnacha. The white wines are made from 100% Verdejo or 100% Malvasa.

Toro wines have a long tradition. Its origins predate even the settlement of the Romans in the area. Has always been high quality wines, very appreciated. In the Middle Ages for its extraordinary quality, it was granted royal privileges that allowed marketing in cities where the sale other wines was prohibited. In that tradition in winemaking have been sipping from generation to generation and today are made true wonders in the area. Frutos Villar was the first winery to settle and market wines from Toro, 1920.
