crawling through mud, climbing walls and working together to make
it through.
Hundreds race in Mud Run
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Tabernacle Sun
Approximately 600 area ath-
letes traveled to Camp Ockanick-
on to test their physical and men-
tal strength on Saturday, Oct. 27,
in the third ABF Mud Run.
Owner of Above and Beyond
Fitness, and personal trainer and
nutritionist, Chad Mason, created
the mud race to challenge dedi-
cated mudders all while donat-
ing to charity.
I used to do a lot of charity
work for multiple organizations. I
wanted to find a local organiza-
tion that we could help, said
Mason. Back in 2006, Camp Ock-
anickon had shut down from all
the floods. We raised enough
money to help open the trails
camp back up.
Fifty percent of the proceeds
collected from the mud run are
donated directly to the camp to
benefit the YMCA programs, as
well as before- and after-school
programs. Additionally, the pro-
ceeds help to send kids to camp
who may not have an opportunity.
According to Mason, 15 kids were
able to attend camp last year
using funds from the run.
Mason runs a cross-fit busi-
ness, which participates in vari-
ous types of mud runs and ex-
treme events in the area.

In the wake of Hurricane
Sandy, vast numbers of New Jer-
sey residents lost basic needs
some of us take for granted on a
daily basis. For Seneca High
School students, they knew they
could step-up and make a differ-
ence.
Students have come together in
a school-wide effort to assist in re-
lief efforts by collecting items
needed for victims of the hurri-
cane.
Immediately after the disas-
ter, and return to school, both stu-
dents and faculty wanted to do
whatever needed in response to
the needs within our own and
surrounding communities, said
Erin Lawler, a counselor at
Seneca, and organizer of Seneca
Collecting. Our kids initiated
this project and saw the need and,
our response in items gathered,
speaks volumes about our kids
hearts and vision for helping oth-
ers.
Each grade is collecting items
for the cause. Ninth grade is col-
lecting blankets, and the 10th
grade students are gathering
toothbrushes, deodorant, femi-
nine products, soap and hand san-
itizer. The upperclassmen are col-
lecting cases of bottled water. All
of the items collected will go di-
rectly to families affected by
Sandy.
The items will go to those in
need. This is inclusive of shelters
and collections sites near Long
Beach Island and in Northern
New Jersey, said Lawler. Many
of our staff and students have di-
rect contacts within their com-
munity, which have been impact-
ed, and we, in turn, are distribut-
ing the items requested at this
time.
Currently, Seneca is over-
whelmed by the outpouring of
support, and is keeping the collec-
tion in-house.

Freeholder OBrien thanks
community for successful drive
Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien recently
thanked Burlington County resi-
dents and businesses for their
overwhelming response to the
countys recent food and clothing
drive to assist Ocean County resi-
dents who were relocated in tem-
porary shelters in Burlington
County after being displaced by
Hurricane Sandy.
She said that residents should
know that the countys collection
efforts have been brought to a
close, and no further donations of
clothing or personal hygiene
items are necessary.
I cant say enough about the
generosity of Burlington County
residents, said OBrien. We re-
ceived an incredible amount of
clothing and food in just a few
days.
While clothing is no longer
being sought, food can still be
taken directly to local food
pantries, whose shelves are tradi-
tionally in need of replenishing
this time of year.
Our residents really stepped
up and answered the call, said
OBrien. Shortly, those in the
shelters will be moved to more sta-
ble locations, and they will have
more clothing to take with them.
I know there are other organi-
zations still collecting items for
all the hurricane victims, and I
encourage everyone to support
those efforts.

Additionally, Seneca held a
blood drive on Nov. 6, organized
before the storm was predicted to
hit New Jersey.
The blood drive was for sen-
iors only and faculty. Students
had to be at least 17 years old to
donate. For many of them, this
was their first time giving blood,
said Erica Maira, student council
adviser. We are very proud of
their bravery and effort.
According to Maira, the school
donated 87 pints of blood, each of
which can save up to three lives.
According to the American Red
Cross, after a donation is made,
the blood will be delivered to a
Red Cross blood component labo-
ratory where it is processed into
several components, red blood
cells, plasma, platelets and/or
cryoprecipitate. A single blood do-
nation may help up to three dif-
ferent people.
If you do the math, three
times 87 equals 261 people that
can receive blood donations from
Seneca High School, said Maira.
More students came out to the
blood drive than in February, ac-
cording to Maira.
The last blood drive was actu-
ally open to juniors and seniors
and faculty. We only collected 75
pints. So, we had more donations
this time with less of a donor
pool, said Maira. It would be
great to think that the recent hur-
ricane and its effect on our com-
munity played a part in the recent
success of November blood drive.
In difficult times, our students
learn to dig a little deeper and
give a little more. An amazing ex-
ample of the humanitarian effort
right here at Seneca High
School.

BC News last month reported
that, since the Transportation
Security Administration was
formed 10 years ago, almost 400 em-
ployees have been fired for allegedly
stealing from passengers.
ABC also talked to a former TSA
worker who claims to have stolen
$800,000 worth of cash and merchan-
dise. He quoted TSA employees as say-
ing: I dont care. They aint paying me.
Theyre treating me wrong.
So, some, by no means all or even
close to a majority, of TSA workers
cant be trusted to keep their hands off
phones, tablets and cash.
We dont want to use too wide of a
brush to paint a picture that TSA em-
ployees are thieves and cant be trust-
ed. In the same ABC report, the TSA
said the number fired represented less
than one-half of 1 percent of those
who have been employed.
But the information leads to one
question: If even only a few TSA em-
ployees are stealing from passengers,
how difficult would it be for a terrorist
group to slip one or two of them a few
bucks to allow who knows what to get
through the security checkpoint?
The nations airport security system
should be changed. If were serious
about deterring terror in the sky, we
have to fix the system. It will cost
money, but it also will give us a much
better, and safer, flying experience.
One only needs to look at Israel to
get some ideas. Now, Israel is a much
smaller country with only a couple of
major airports, so perhaps not every
security tactic it uses can be adapted to
the United States.
But the U.S. can incorporate some
measures. There can be highly trained
personnel on hand to interview pas-
sengers, for example. Give a wrong or
puzzling answer? Get pulled out of line
for more questions.
Lets keep our shoes on, hire the
right people to do the job and finally
get serious about protecting airplanes
from terrorists.

our own, said Mason. Most people say
this event was the hardest, most physically
challenging event theyve ever done.
The 6.4-mile course contains six water
obstacles, a challenge to climb up and
down large hills with 50-pound bags of
sand, water logs to walk across and other
hurdles featured to challenge the athletes.
The best obstacle was the jarheads
playground, said Sue Dmochowski, volun-
teer coordinator. There were nine obsta-
cles in the area, and it was only counted as
one [in total]. Ive done Tough Mudders
and Ive never seen anything like this.
Chad did a lot of really good things creat-
ing this course.
Other obstacles on the course included
tubes, a rope climb across a lake, swim-
ming over and under logs, and the worst,
according to participants, a 30-foot ice
bath. The bath, was a lined dumpster that
was full of ice water complete with a bar to
swim under with barbed wire on top. The
obstacle was prepped with multiple bags of
ice, refilled once or twice every few hours.
Athletes traveled from local towns, in ad-
dition to neighboring states. Two brothers,
Stephen Vassallo, from Maryland, and
Charles Vassallo, from Brooklyn, traveled
to compete in the event.
I wanted to do something before the
end of racing season, said Stephen.
Weve done Spartan [races] before, and
Ive started to page when the events arent
challenging. I did some research and came
across this mud run, it had everything [we]
wanted.
The two competitors, wanted a good
cause to accompany the challenge.
The people who run it are great.
Theyre nice, accommodating, and its a
good race, said Charles.
Its not-for-profit, and has a pretty good
mission, said Stephen.
Area residents drove the short distance
to Medford for their shot to compete in the
race, as well.
Theresa Valenzano, of Shamong, organ-
ized a team comprised of local athletes.
Valenzano recently competed the Ironman
Triathlon in Lake Placid, N.Y.
This race is completely different from
other races. This focuses a lot on the team
effort to get past the obstacles, said Valen-
zano. I liked the [jarheads] playground. It
was very challenging, and tests any ath-
lete. It was the best part so far.
Valenzano plans on returning next year

Race is about finishing
for the race, and advises
athletes to not take the course
lightly.
We had people out there push-
ing you, and making you account-
able for your actions, said
Mason. At the other mud runs,
theres nobody there [at the obsta-
cles]. There might be a kid point-
ing. I tried to demonstrate, and
have all my volunteers demon-
strate.
The mud run was more of an
obstacle course than a traditional
running event. Athletes ran a
total of one mile between obsta-
cles.
This was an extreme obstacle
event, not a running event, said
Mason.
Overall, though, according to
Mason, it isnt about being the
best, its about finishing the
course and how athletes chal-
lenged themselves.
This is why mud runs are dif-
ferent than marathons, half
marathons or triathlons. These
people arent running against the
clock, theyre just running to see
if they can finish it, said Mason.
