The ABF Mud Run at Camp Ockanickon had athletes crawling through mud, climbing walls and working together to
make it through.
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Approximately 600 area athletes
traveled to Camp Ockanickon to test
their physical and mental strength on
Saturday, Oct. 27, in the third ABF
Mud Run.
Owner of Above and Beyond Fit-
ness, and personal trainer and nutri-
tionist, Chad Mason, created the mud
race to challenge dedicated mud-
ders all while donating to charity.
I used to do a lot of charity work
for multiple organizations. I wanted
to find a local organization that we
could help, said Mason. Back in
2006, Camp Ockanickon had shut
down from all the floods. We raised
enough money to help open the trails
camp back up.
Fifty percent of the proceeds col-
lected from the mud run were donat-
ed directly to the camp to help benefit
the YMCA programs, as well as be-
fore- and after-school programs. Addi-
tionally, the proceeds help to send
kids to camp that may not have an op-
portunity. According to Mason, 15
kids were able to attend camp last
year using funds from the run.
Mason runs a cross-fit business,
which participates in various types of
mud runs and extreme events in the
area.
We try to take the best of every
event we do, and make it our own,
said Mason. Most people say this
event was the hardest, most physical-
ly challenging event theyve ever
done.
The 6.4-mile course contains six
water obstacles, a challenge to climb
up and down large hills with 50-pound
bags of sand, water logs to walk
across and other hurdles featured to
challenge the athletes.
The best obstacle was the jar-
heads playground, said Sue Dmo-
chowski, volunteer coordinator.
There were nine obstacles in the
area, and it was only counted as one
[in total]. Ive done Tough Mudders
and Ive never seen anything like this.
Chad did a lot of really good things
creating this course.

cluded tubes, a rope climb across a

Boards to be consolidated
The reorganization is to help with board efficiency
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Advisory boards within Med-
ford Township will be consolidat-
ed and reorganized. Three ordi-
nances, all introduced at first
reading at the Nov. 7 council
meeting, will help reorganize the
various boards to help them run
more efficiently.
Its about streamlining. What
we have is a scarcity of manage-
ment, said council member
Chris Buoni. We need to be able
to save time for the manager. To
do that, its best to consolidate.
According to Buoni, advisory
boards were being assembled to
help solve problems within the
township. The end result was too
many boards, and not enough vol-
unteers to fill the boards.
With one board well have bet-
ter accountability and efficiency
with the council, said Buoni.
The Shade Tree Advisory
Board and the Open Space Advi-
sory Board were both consolidat-
ed to created the Environmental
Affairs Committee. Additionally,
the Traffic Safety Advisory Board
and the Public Safety Advisory
Board were eliminated.
There were so many boards, it
got out of control, said Buoni.
The Recreation Advisory
Board, the Cultural Arts Commis-
sion, the Homeowners Associa-
tion Advisory Board, the Senior
Citizens Advisory Board, and the
Municipal Alliance Board were
consolidated to create a new
Neighborhood Services Advisory
Committee, according to the ordi-
nance.
The committee has not yet
been selected, but the council will
require members to be Medford
residents.
The ordinances will be up for
public hearing at the Nov. 20
meeting.
In other news: Lt. Jeffrey Wag-
ner was able to report all the
homes in Medford were restored
power, and thanked all those who
helped and volunteered their
services during Hurricane Sandy.
According to officials, there
were a number of volunteers
from the area including the
Pinelands CERT, Mt. Laurel the
Red Cross and volunteers from
Medford. There were a total of
1,200 volunteered hours.
We had great support from
our CERT volunteers, we were
able to direct people where they
can get food, water and supplies,

Beenstock, Watson re-elected
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
The Nov. 6 elections proved to
be successful for Republican in-
cumbents Jeff Beenstock and
Chuck Watson. Both men were re-
elected to continue their work on
township council.
Were really excited. We want
to serve Medford, weve been
doing it for 10 months now, and
we would like to continue to do
it, said Watson.
The men inherited a $6 million
debt when originally taking office
in the beginning of the year, and
pledge to continue to solve the
problem during their next term.
We adopted a balanced budget
on time, and have begun the
process of restoring Medford.
There is much work to be done,
though, to make sure that Med-
ford is fiscally stable for the long
term, Beenstock told The Sun in
October. We can achieve this
goal by ensuring that the munici-
pality provides only core munici-
pal services and seeing to it that
Medford is business friendly
while still maintaining the char-
acter of our town.
According to the Burlington
County Clerks office, Beenstock
received 30.51 percent of Med-
fords vote, with 6,721 votes. Wat-
son received 29.77 percent, with
6,559 votes.
Well be able to continue what
we started. It wouldve been dis-
appointing having started the job
for a year, and not being able to
see it through, said Beenstock.
Well be able to keep working on
what we started.
Both are focused on the finan-
cial well-being of the town and
the ability to manage the deficit.
While thats the most impor-
tant thing to focus on, getting our
financial house back in order,
theres a lot of other things we
wont forget, either, said Watson.
Theyre committed to bringing
business back into Medford.
We want to help make Med-
ford more business friendly, were
working on a new sign ordinance,
were working on zoning and
planning permits. We want to
make that process easier, said
Watson.
Additionally, the council mem-
bers are dedicated to keeping gov-
ernment transparency.
Government transparency in
Medford is at a higher level now
than before we took office in Jan-
uary, Watson told The Sun in Oc-
tober. We will continue to have
meetings that are run in an open
and civil manner, and the public
will continue to have multiple op-
portunities to comment and ask
questions at our meetings. Our
budget process will continue in
open meetings with public com-
ment and all of the documents we
use will be made available online
as was done this year.
Im excited about Medford
and continuing to restore Med-
ford, said Beenstock.

BC News last month reported
that, since the Transportation
Security Administration was
formed 10 years ago, almost 400 em-
ployees have been fired for allegedly
stealing from passengers.
ABC also talked to a former TSA
worker who claims to have stolen
$800,000 worth of cash and merchan-
dise. He quoted TSA employees as say-
ing: I dont care. They aint paying me.
Theyre treating me wrong.
So, some, by no means all or even
close to a majority, of TSA workers
cant be trusted to keep their hands off
phones, tablets and cash.
We dont want to use too wide of a
brush to paint a picture that TSA em-
ployees are thieves and cant be trust-
ed. In the same ABC report, the TSA
said the number fired represented less
than one-half of 1 percent of those
who have been employed.
But the information leads to one
question: If even only a few TSA em-
ployees are stealing from passengers,
how difficult would it be for a terrorist
group to slip one or two of them a few
bucks to allow who knows what to get
through the security checkpoint?
The nations airport security system
should be changed. If were serious
about deterring terror in the sky, we
have to fix the system. It will cost
money, but it also will give us a much
better, and safer, flying experience.
One only needs to look at Israel to
get some ideas. Now, Israel is a much
smaller country with only a couple of
major airports, so perhaps not every
security tactic it uses can be adapted to
the United States.
But the U.S. can incorporate some
measures. There can be highly trained
personnel on hand to interview pas-
sengers, for example. Give a wrong or
puzzling answer? Get pulled out of line
for more questions.
Lets keep our shoes on, hire the
right people to do the job and finally
get serious about protecting airplanes
from terrorists.

The National Association of Women
Business Owners South Jersey Chapter is
continuously trying to find ways to give
back to the local community. In the past,
NAWBO South Jersey has offered grants,
scholarships and donations to local funds
and charities. Now they are pleased to pres-
ent their newest grant program One Year
of NAWBO.
One year of NAWBO is a grant that of-
fers a one-year, all-expenses paid member-
ship to NAWBO to a Displaced Homemak-
er, which is defined by the Womens Op-
portunity Center of Burlington County as
a woman who has, lost financial support
due to separation, divorce, death or disabil-
ity of a spouse, and are now forced into a
position of being the breadwinner for their
family.
According to Cathi Rendfrey, director of
WOC, who will be receiving the Womens
Advocate of the Year Award from NAWBO,
at this years Beyond the Glass Ceiling
event, on Nov. 15, this is a wonderful oppor-
tunity for many women in need of career
education.
While we all know that this is a tough
economy, statistics show that women have
recovered fewer jobs over the last three
years than have men. In fact, women have
obtained less than 20 percent of the jobs
created over that time despite having lost
30 percent of the jobs that were cut during
the recession.
This is primarily due to job cuts in the
public sector, which typically affect more
women. This means that now more than
ever women must be prepared to turn to
the private sector.
NAWBO and its members understand
the hardships of the Displaced Homemak-
er. NAWBO South Jersey believes that a
year-long expenses paid membership can
offer someone invaluable assistance by
helping them acquire and update the skills
required to start a small business or re-
enter the workforce.
This is achieved by providing the
grantee access to business education, in-
spirational lectures, networking groups
with like-minded individuals, a national
platform for growth, and a career-focused
environment.
Candidates are selected based on need,
and their individual potential to get in-
volved and to use their NAWBO member-
ship to the maximum. President of
NAWBOSJ, Tracy Shields, states that,
One grant will be awarded every Nov. 1,
unless more funding can be secured, in
which case we can offer more member-
ships, to help more women in need.

Freeholder thanks
community for drive
Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien recently
thanked Burlington County resi-
dents and businesses for their
overwhelming response to the
countys recent food and clothing
drive to assist Ocean County resi-
dents who were relocated in tem-
porary shelters in Burlington
County after being displaced by
Hurricane Sandy.
She said that residents should
know that the countys collection
efforts have been brought to a
close, and no further donations of
clothing or personal hygiene
items are necessary.
I cant say enough about the
generosity of Burlington County
residents, said OBrien. We re-
ceived an incredible amount of
clothing and food in just a few
days.
While clothing is no longer
being sought, food can still be
taken directly to local food
pantries, whose shelves are tradi-
tionally in need of replenishing
this time of year.
Our residents really stepped
up and answered the call, said
OBrien. Shortly, those in the
shelters will be moved to more
stable locations, and they will
have more clothing to take with
them.
I know there are other organi-
zations still collecting items for
all the hurricane victims, and I
encourage everyone to support
those efforts.

WANT TO BE LISTED?
To have your meeting or affair listed in the Calendar or Meetings,
information must be received, in writing, two weeks prior to the
date of the event.
Send information by mail to: Calendar, The Medford Sun, 108 Kings
Highway East, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. Or by email: news@med-
fordsun.com. Or you can submit a calendar listing through our
website (www.medfordsun.com).
lake, swimming over and under
logs, and the worst, according to
participants, a 30-foot ice bath.
The bath, was a lined dumpster
that was full of ice water com-
plete with a bar to swim under
with barbed wire on top. The ob-
stacle was prepped with multiple
bags of ice, refilled once or twice
every few hours.
Athletes traveled from local
towns, in addition to neighboring
states.
Two brothers, Stephen Vassal-
lo, from Maryland, and Charles
Vassallo, from Brooklyn, traveled
to compete in the event.
I wanted to do something be-
fore the end of racing season,
said Stephen. Weve done Spar-
tan [races] before, and Ive started
to gauge when the events arent
challenging. I did some research
and came across this mud run, it
had everything [we] wanted.
The two competitors wanted a
good cause to accompany the
challenge.
The people who run it are
great. Theyre nice, accommodat-
ing and its a good race, said
Charles.
Its not-for-profit, and has a
pretty good mission, said
Stephen.
Area residents drove the short
distance to Medford for their shot
to compete in the race, as well.
This gave me motivation to
stay in shape. Every time you
wonder should I go out and work
today, I remember I have a race
looming over my head so it gets
you out, said Medford native
Dave Howarth.
Howarth is a seasoned mud
runner, and welcomes the chal-
lenge the courses bring.
Ive done Mud Man X, the Air
Force base held a mud run, said
Howarth. This course was more
challenging. There were a lot
more obstacles, and a lot of repet-
itive obstacles.
The course was back-to-back
obstacles, according to Mason,
with increasing intensity and
challenge as athletes made their
way through.
We had people out there push-
ing you, and making you account-
able for your actions, said
Mason.
At the other mud runs, theres
nobody there [at the obstacles].
There might be a kid pointing. I
tried to demonstrate, and have all
my volunteers demonstrate.
The mud run was more of an
obstacle course than a traditional
running event. Athletes ran a
total of one mile between obsta-
cles.
This was an extreme obstacle
event, not a running event, said
Mason.
Overall, though, according to
Mason, it isnt about being the
best, its about finishing the
course and how athletes chal-
lenged themselves.
This is why mud runs are dif-
ferent than marathons, half
marathons or triathlons. These
people arent running against the
clock, theyre just running to see
if they can finish it, said Mason.
You come in here as an individ-
ual or a team member, and come
out as a family.
