Chapter 10 Performance Assessment

A cereal company is making plans for shipping its new cereal. The cereal is packaged in boxes that are 8 inches wide, 10 inches tall, and 2.5 inches deep. Each box weighs 1 pound 2 ounces. 1. For lifting purposes, it is preferred that each shipping container hold no more than 45 pounds. Explain how to find the maximum number of cereal boxes that can be shipped in each shipping container, based on weight. (Hint: change both measures to ounces.)

2. Draw a picture to show how the cereal boxes can be packed into the shipping container. What dimensions will be needed for each shipping container? Explain how you arrived at your answer.

3. Draw a net for a shipping container. How much cardboard is needed for each shipping container? Explain your calculations.

Teacher Notes
Concepts and Skills This activity requires students to: convert customary units of weight. draw a net for a rectangular prism. find the surface area of a rectangular prism. find volumes of rectangular prisms. Materials straightedges Guiding the Activity It might make the activity more meaningful if you have students bring in a variety of cereal boxes and compare the weights on the boxes as well as sizes of the boxes. If you want students to be able to use objects for Exercise 2, you might let them make cereal boxes out of scrap paper or light cardboard the day or evening before 3 the test. A good scale model might be 8 in. 1 by 1 in. by 1 4 in. As an extension, you might discuss which dimensions of the shipping box minimize the amount of cardboard needed for a volume of 8,000 in3. Answers 1. 40 cereal boxes; Each cereal box is 16 or 18 ounces. Each shipping container can hold 45 16 or 720 ounces. 720 18 40 2. 2

Scoring Rubric
Level 4 Standard to be achieved for performance at specified level Full Achievement The student calculated conversions, surface area, and volume and drew the net without error. The student showed a thorough understanding of surface area and volume. Explanations were well written and drawings were neat. Substantial Achievement The student calculated conversions, surface area, and volume and drew the net with only minor errors. The student showed considerable understanding of surface area and volume. Explanations were basically well written and drawings were fairly neat. Partial Achievement The student made errors calculating conversions, surface area, and volumes and drawing the net. The student showed some understanding of surface area and volume. Explanations were fairly complete, but not well written and drawings were incomplete. Little Achievement The student made numerous errors calculating conversions, surface area, and volume and in drawing the net. The student showed little or no understanding of surface area and volume. Explanations and drawings were missing or unclear.
