Guiding the Activity It might be helpful to review the basics of a balanced diet. According to the Food Pyramid published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a person should eat 2 to 3 servings of meat, 2 to 3 servings of dairy products, 3 to 5 servings of vegetables, 2 to 4 servings of fruit, and 6 to 11 servings of bread and pasta. You may want to ask questions such as, which meat item contains the least calories? Answers 1. 3c; Substitute 10 for c and multiply. 3 10 30, so 3 servings of lettuce have 30 calories. 3. It was easy to use mental math to find the total grams of fat. 4. An apple has fewer grams of fat and fewer calories than a banana. So, I could reduce the total fat and calories by serving apples instead of bananas.
