News and Prayer Letter October 2012


We are finally writing our first monthly update. Over the past several months, we have been planning and praying towards this beginning phase (organizing and raising support) of church planting. Here's what the Lord has been doing and where He has brought us in our preparation for planting a church in Pittsburgh. Just a few weeks ago, I (Dennis) had the opportunity to speak at the Pennsylvania Association of Regular Baptist Churches (PARBC) Conference. I will say that speaking to a room full of seasoned pastors is a humbling experience. It was a great privilege, and God used those few days to encourage us in our desire to see churches planted in Pittsburgh. Over the next year, we will be focusing on planning, organizing, and raising support in preparation for the launch of a new church. God has already given us 5 meetings (4 this fall) in local churches. We will be on part-time deputation, which means that we will only be commuting on weekends to churches. We are excited to be able to share the need of home missions with local churches. Many people have asked if we have a specific neighborhood in mind. The answer: Almost! About 5 months ago, we began developing a list of potential neighborhoods. We had 8 on that list. Currently, there are 4 (although 2 are especially of interest to us). All of these neighborhoods have very little or no witness of the Gospel. Other than that, the neighborhoods do not have much in common as it relates to the community demographics. We take walks through these neighborhoods 2-3 times per week. During our walks, we pray, talk with residents, and just observe as much of the neighborhood as we can (children playing, age and race of the people, signs and banners hanging [gives you an idea of what they value], etc). One big prayer of ours has been finding partners to join us. We have been praying for 3 additional couples/families to join us either short term (1 year) or long term. God has already placed us in contact with a few couples that may have an interest in helping us. This is an exciting time for us. While it is exciting, we know there will be trials and testing.
