A View of Grade Two
Equipping students to impact the world for Christ Do Hard Things
October 1, 2012
Dear Parents, We have started our unit on the water cycle. We are also looking at the importance of water in our lives. On Thursday, weather permitting we will take a walk to the Ochiai River by the school, to observe and collect interesting water words. We will also be filling some buckets to carry, to identify with children in countries where they have to walk and collect water each day. Language arts - This week we will be finishing up individual reading assessments. After that each student, in consultation with the teacher, will be choosing an area of special focus: comprehension, accuracy, fluency, or expand vocabulary. For example, a student who is struggling to read the words correctly would choose to focus on accuracy. Students will get together in small groups with the teacher to focus on strategies to help them with that area where their need is greatest. Each student will be getting a writers notebook to collect ideas and words for stories. Once a week it would be good to sit with your child and help them think of ideas to add. Maybe share a story from your childhood.
Bible - We will begin our unit on the birth of Christ. The Bible memory for this is rather long, Luke 2:8-20. We will be working on it in 3 sections and many of the students learned part of it in first grade. The first part, Luke 2:8-11 is due Friday, October 5. A syllabus of the unit is attached with this newsletter. The students will have a choice on how to show their understanding. The choices are on the attachment RAFT. I will be explaining to the students in class on Wednesday. Mathematics - We are working on sharing an addition strategy using snap blocks, base 10 blocks, a number line or a number grid. The students wrote number stories last week that will come home in a booklet for homework this week. Please have your child do 4-5 each night and return the booklet on Friday.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:8-11
