INDIAN SYSTEM OF BUSINESS
Course Code: Course Objective:
This subject would enable students to understand the salient features of the Indian Business Environment comprising of Public Sector Undertakings, Private Enterprises and the Government role. To make students comprehend the effect of the Indian economys Fiscal, Monetary and other policies on the Indian businesses and their competitive environment. To highlight the inter-relationships that exist between the Indian business systems and the International trade regulatory mechanism consisting of bodies like the WTO, World Bank, IMF etc. To clarify conceptually, the highlights of certain unique Indian business systems relating to SSI, rural markets, price and distribution controls etc.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course the student will be able to: Explain the concept of business, functional areas of business & forms of business organization. Explain logistics and distribution system used in internal and foreign trade. Explain role of various services organizations in carrying out business activities
Course Contents:
Module I: Introduction to Business: Nature, Characteristics and Scope Industry, Commerce, Trade and Aids to /trade Functional Areas of Business. Module II: Forms of Business Organization Sale proprietorship Partnership Joint Hindu family Joint Stock Company Cooperatives. Module III: Internal Trade Channels of Distribution Mercantile Agents Organization, Buying Policy and Functions of Wholesalers Organization, Management and Functions of Retailers Hire purchase System; Kinds of Retail Distribution; Multiple Shops, Departmental Store, Mail-order and other Types of Retail Trade. Module IV: Foreign Trade Benefits, Problems and Prospects General Procedure for Exporting Import Trade; Types of Importers, Import Trade Procedure Types of Price Quotations Documents used in Import and Export Trade Export Promotion Institutions. Module V: Banking Banking System in India, Procedure of Opening a Bank Account, Types of Accounts, Types of Banks Negotiable Instruments and their types Bill of Exchange Endorsement Dishonor Discounting of Bills Renewal of Bills Types of Bills Promissory Notes Cheques. Module VI: Transportation and Insurance Introduction to transportation system in India. Modes of transportation, their merits and demerits Storage and Warehousing - need, functions and types.
Insurance; Meaning Types of Insurance Contract, Principles of Insurance, Double Insurance, and Re-insurance Marine Insurance.
Learning Methods:
The course will focus on understanding the Indian system of business by adopting a mixed pedagogy including lectures, profusely illustrated by examples of various Indian companies. Case studies will be discussed by the instructor and accompanied by the group presentations written and oral by the students under the supervision of the instructor. The assessment program will be student driven, requiring the student to develop his/her communication skills by presentations and debates
