Downes Scoring System

The Downes Scoring system provides a scale for evaluating respiratory distress in infants based on symptoms like cyanosis, retractions, grunting and air entry, with higher scores indicating more severe distress. A score above 4 suggests clinical respiratory distress and monitoring blood gases, while a score over 8 implies impending respiratory failure. The document also provides normal ranges for arterial blood gas measurements like pH, PaCO2, PaO2 and O2 saturation to identify respiratory failure or pulmonary disorders.
