For the 15th-straight year,
members of the American Le-
gion Post 38 are reaching out to
students of Haddonfield Middle
School to teach them about
American history and the role
that the armed forces have played
in the course of the United States
of America.
Post member Tom Baird said
the members of Haddonfield
American Legion Post 38 and
local veterans and soldiers will
participate in the 15th-Annual
Veterans Day Program at the
Middle School on Friday, Nov. 4,
from 9:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Local veterans and soldiers,
sailors, airmen and Marines on
active duty or serving in the Na-
tional Guard or Reserves are en-
couraged to participate in this
event which fosters friendships
and camaraderie while educating
students. Veterans and service
members should report to the
Middle School Auditorium at 9:30
a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. The sug-
gested dress is coat and tie or uni-
form.
The days schedule will begin
with a program in the auditori-
um which will include the
Pledge of Allegiance, the Star
Spangled Banner and remarks
by Middle School Principal Dr.
Gino Priolo, teacher John Farrell
and Post 38 Commander Joe Ade.
Following the discussions, a
video presentation will be shown
to the students and Taps will be
played for all the veterans who
have been lost in the countrys
history. This year, the focus will
be on World War II veterans,
Baird said.
Following the program, there
will be a luncheon for veterans,
selected students and faculty in
the library. After lunch, the veter-
ans will visit the seventh- and
eighth-grade classes for informal
discussion, and a question and
answer session. The program
will be completed by 1:30 p.m.
Veterans who would like to at-
tend are asked to contact D.W.

Voters will head to the polls
on Tuesday, Nov. 8 and will de-
cide one local referendum ques-
tion dealing with the renewal of
an open-space tax.
Polls for the election open at 6
a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
The open-space tax was first
adopted on Nov. 7, 2006.
The initial vote approved a
maximum open space tax of two
cents per $100 of assessed prop-
erty value with a provision that
it would expire after five years
unless renewed by referendum.
This years question would
cap the maximum allowable
open- space tax at one cent,
which would raise about $226,936
a year.
It equates to about $49 per
year for a property assessed at
the borough average of $491,359.
The borough has collected al-
most $557,000 over the past five
years through the open space
tax.
The commissioners recently
published a comment in regard
to the open space question:
As our citizens consider the
referendum on the ballot this
November to continue the Open
Space Trust Fund Tax, we be-
lieve it is helpful and appropri-
ate to advise the voters of our
current intentions concerning
the use of funds generated by
that tax.
If terms favorable to the bor-
ough are proposed by Bancroft,
it is our intention to use the
funds generated by the Open
Space Tax up to now and in the
near future to fund the acquisi-
tion and improvement of por-
tions of the Bancroft property
for active and passive recreation.
Should it become apparent that
the Bancroft property would not
be available, we will promptly
reevaluate the uses of these
open-space funds and develop a
plan for their expenditure for
purposes authorized by the ref-
erendum.
This statement is made by
the present board of commis-
sioners and cannot bind future
commissioners.

eight districts in Haddonfield,

6 THE HADDONFIELD SUN NOVEMBER 2-8, 2011
letters to the editor
I
t seems as though weve been
stuck in campaign mode for
months. Local and state races get
decided next week. Presidential pri-
maries are only a couple of months
away.
Its time for a break. Time to talk
about something that everyone should
be thrilled about.
Racing is coming to the state in 2013
with the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix
of America at Port Imperial in Wee-
hawken and West New York. Accord-
ing to the governors office, the race
will be a 3.2-mile road race, run on ex-
isting roads through Port Imperial
and at the top of the Palisades.
So why is this such great news?
First, the world now will get a view
of New Jersey that doesnt include
Snookie. (Or, at least, we dont think
she will be driving one of the cars).
Second, there will be a huge eco-
nomic impact. Organizers anticipate
100,000 people to attend each race of
the three-day event. And while a for-
mal study is still being put together,
the state anticipates hundreds of mil-
lions of dollars in economic develop-
ment during the 10 years of the agree-
ment.
Third, its just going to be cool to
have a big-time race in the home state.
These types of events (the Super
Bowl is coming to the state, too) are
great for everyone in a state that has
been hit hard by tough economic
times. Local municipalities and school
districts have been cutting corners.
Taxes already are high enough. Bal-
ancing government services with rev-
enues has been an enormous chal-
lenge. Grabbing as many tourism dol-
lars as possible simply makes sense.
So, as one political season winds
down and another gets ready to
launch, lets take a minute to recog-
nize a positive development.
Start your engines
Formula 1 agreement great news for New Jersey
Rev it up
Racing is coming to New Jersey. Its a
winner for taxpayers, as the econom-
ic boost should be huge.
Election letters to the editor
Please visit [Link] read letters regarding the Nov. 8 elections.
A teachers worth cannot be
measured by money
The love of material wealth the drive
to better ones life as one only can with
money motivates many of the noblest ac-
tions that are regularly done. Social order
would collapse overnight if people stopped
doing the things they do just because they
are paid. Unfortunately, it takes a rare indi-
vidual to objectively assess what the work
he does is worth to his fellow man, but that
is what teachers are forced to do in a sys-
tem that makes it impossible to judge their
performance on the basis of profit and
loss.
When a private individual provides his
fellow man with a good and/or service, he
can compare what the customer pays him
to what he pays to provide it and determine
whether he is wasting his talents and capi-
tal. If he transforms what was valued (by
the purchasing decisions of millions of
consumers) at $2 into something a cus-
tomer values at $3, he has done a service to
society.
Since the public school system is not a
revenue-generating institution, the admin-
istration is not governed by the wishes of
parents.
There is no objective basis to say
whether it is or is not cost-effective to buy
$120 math textbooks, employ one teacher
for every 12 students, or pay a teacher
$60,000 per year with a pension and health
benefits. And indeed, in the last half centu-
ry, America has seen costs consistently rise
and effectiveness consistently drop.
The bureaucrats squabbling over what
in most industries would be sternly arbi-
trated by the balance sheets is a sign that
its time for Haddonfield to lead the way in
abandoning the antiquated system of a
public monopoly. Theres an argument to
be made for some tax-funded subsidies
most economists believe that education
has positive externalities, and thus less
than is efficient would be produced at ordi-
nary market prices but for Haddonfield
schools to remain on top, they must accept
the discipline of market prices and con-
sumer choice.

The continuing saga
of Galloway Township
The mayor of Galloway Township and
township officials are fighting in court
over whether the mayor keeps his job after
dodging meetings for two months, accord-
ing to Galloway Patch. Oh. And a council
member said Mayor Keith Hartman had an
affair with former township clerk Lisa
Tilton. A little background first. When we
checked in last September, Hartman had
suspended his reelection race because, he
said, he and his family had received
threats including, he now tells Patch, to
expose extramarital affairs he had within
the community.
Though he says the threats came from
unknown parties, the Atlantic County
Prosecutors Office apparently investigat-
ed whether they may have came from fel-
low Republican Councilman Dennis Klein-
er and local union official Roy Foster. Hart-
man and Kleiner had been butting heads
for months.
Anyway, Hartman began skipping coun-
cil meetings in August. Meanwhile, Tilton
was suing the town. The township had sus-
pended her from the clerkship in June, cit-
ing various disciplinary reasons that dont
seem to have been made public. First she
resigned, in a separation agreement with
the council then she withdrew that resig-
nation, and she sued the township for vio-
lating that separation agreement, as well
as for invasion of privacy, slander and
libel.
Its a $3 million lawsuit against 10 Gal-
loway officials, including every member of
the council except Hartman. All caught
up? Good. Because since then, Hartman
has said hes running for reelection after
all but continued avoiding council meet-
ings from Aug. 23 until last Tuesday. Eight
weeks had passed, which legally meant
that his seat is vacant. If the mayor or any
member of the governing body doesnt
show up for eight weeks, state and town-
ship law say theyre not in office anymore.
Technically, the 37,350 people in this 114.8
square-mile town havent had a mayor
since 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 18. Thats why Hart-
man showed up to the council Tuesday to
ask his buddy Kleiner and the rest of them
to excuse those absences retroactively.
The meeting well, it didnt go well.

Haddonfield-area residents are
taking a step forward in the fight
against brain tumors in the Na-
tional Brain Tumor Societys
Race for Hope Philadelphia on
Sunday Nov. 6.
Haddonfield area residents are
joining people nationwide who
want to make a difference for all
those affected by brain tumors.
The Race for Hope Philadelphia
is one of 15 nationwide events or-
ganized by the National Brain
Tumor Society (NBTS) to raise
both awareness and funding for
the fight against brain tumors.
The 5K run/walk will take place
at the steps of the Museum of
Art. Registration begins at 6:30
a.m. and programs and activities
run from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Families, friends, and co-work-
ers take part in the inspirational,
all-ages run and walk and com-
munity day to support the brain
tumor cause. More than 6,000 peo-
ple are expected to honor and cel-
ebrate loved ones affected by
brain tumors by taking part in
the Race for Hope and raise more
than $1 million. Proceeds support
NBTSs mission to end brain tu-
mors.
The Race for Hope is a chance
for the entire Philadelphia com-
munity to come together and sup-
port the fight against brain tu-
mors, said N. Paul TonThat, ex-
ecutive director for the National
Brain Tumor Society. Funds
from the Race for Hope enable
vital research that will lead to bet-
ter treatments and ultimately a
cure. The Race for Hope also rais-
es awareness that brain tumors
can strike anyone, and there is
still no cure.
National Brain Tumor Society
is a nonprofit organization com-
mitted to finding a cure for brain
tumors. NBTS aggressively
drives strategic research, advo-
cates for public policies that meet
the critical needs of the brain
tumor community, and provides
helpful patient information. Over
the past three years, NBTS has
funded more than $10 million in
brain tumor research throughout
North America.
The Race for Hope will be the
culmination of the first-ever Na-
tional Brain Tumor Society Sum-
mit.
The summit will bring the
brain tumor community together
for four days of educational and
inspirational events, including
the NBTS Annual Meeting, the
opportunity to learn about tools
to help navigate brain tumor sur-
vivorship.
Each year more than 210,000
people in the United States are di-
agnosed with a primary or
metastatic brain tumor thats
over 500 people every day.
Brain tumors are the second
leading cause of cancer death in
children under age 20.
Only one out of three adults di-
agnosed with a malignant brain
tumor today will be alive in five
years.
More so than any other cancer,
a brain tumor can have life-alter-
ing psychological, cognitive, be-
havioral, and physical effects.

The Haddonfield Sun
A public meeting in the bor-
ough that wasnt dominated by
the Bancroft issue? Youd think it
was a dream, but it was true as
the Haddonfield Civic Associa-
tion hosted its Annual Town Hall
meeting recently as Haddonfield
representatives fielded questions
for about two hours from a crowd-
ed audience.
Bill Tourtellotte, civic associa-
tion representative, thanked the
residents for attending and then
turned the evening over to former
mayor Jack Tarditi, emcee of the
meeting.
While Bancroft was discussed
for about 30 minutes at the end of
the meeting, most residents asked
questions about the varying con-
struction projects in town, the
rash of copper downspouts being
stolen off of homes and updates
on the library.
Representatives included Com-
missioners Ed Borden and Jeff
Kasko, Mayor Tish Colombi, Ad-
ministrator Sharon McCullough,
Police Chief John Banning, Li-
brary Administrator Susan Bri-
ant and Fire Chief Joe Riggs. Sev-
eral other leaders of various bor-
ough committees were in atten-
dance as well.
Tarditi read questions from at-
tendees, as they were submitted
prior to the meetings start. They
were then answered by the appro-
priate borough leader. Questions
about Bancroft and its redevelop-
ment were limited to the end of
the meeting.
The Tanner Street and Euclid
Street intersection garnered a lot
of attention from visitors, as
Colombi informed residents that
the project would likely be fin-
ished by start of December. Cur-
rently the intersection needs to be
repaved before the final portion
can be finished, which includes
additional parking spaces, cross-
walks, and the installation of a
new sidewalk.
This is the absolute last phase
of the Tanner Street reconstruc-
tion project, Colombi said.
One resident asked for an up-
date on the current phase of the
library, Tarditti said, reading
from a question card. Colombi
said the borough has been talking
about the library issue for the
past 25 years. There is no decision
on the librarys future, she said,
and representatives are still look-
ing at all options. A library com-
mittee recently reviewed an op-
tion that had been previously sub-
mitted to the borough to build a
new library at Allen Avenue,
Colombi said.
Kasko dissuaded fears that the
borough would have its bond rat-
ing decreased, much like
Collingswood is going through
right now.
Collingswoods situation is
much different than Haddon-
fields, the director of revenue
and finance said. Collingswood is
millions of dollars in debt and at
this time cant repay what they
owe, he said, which is why theyre
being downgraded.
Haddonfield has a much more
fiscally responsible amount of
debt, Kasko said.
The commissioners also field-
ed questions about Bancroft and
the latest redevelopment plan
submitted by the Haddonfield
School District. All of the com-
missioners said that the plan has
several aspects worth investigat-
ing and they will continue to ana-
lyze the plan.
Kasko revealed that he hoped
the commissioners would be able
to present the planning board
with a redevelopment plan they
agreed on by the end of the year.
He said that he hopes the redevel-
opment plan for Bancroft will be
concluded in 2012, not years and
years from now.
Here are several other points of
conversation discussed at the
meeting:
Colombi informed residents
that leaf collection will be re-
duced from six times a season to
three this year. The DPW will col-
lect leaves throughout the bor-
ough once for two weeks after
Oct. 31.
Then, the DPW will go back out
between Nov. 14 and Dec. 9 two
more times.
McCullough said that any
leaves placed on the curb after
Dec. 9 will not be collected. They
must be placed in the green vege-
tative waste buckets to be picked
up after the date.
Borden said that the borough
does not have to make a decision
on spending its open space funds
or Green Acre awards until the
fall of 2012. The commissioners
recently published a statement
saying that the open space funds
would go toward the purchase of
the Bancroft property for as long
as the option is on the table.
Banning urged residents to
speak up and report suspicious
behavior to the Haddonfield Po-
lice Department. There have been
a number of thefts of copper
downspouts in the borough in the
past few weeks, he said, and any-
body with any information
should call the police department.
