Investigation of the magnetic field of a current-carrying rectangular coil. When terminals of d.c. Supply are reversed, the current direction is reversed. When resistance of rheostat is further decreased, the current flow will increase since e.m.f. Remains the same.

Aim: To investigate the magnetic field of a current-carrying rectangular coil.

Procedure: 1. Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram above. Support 2 pieces of plain paper onto 2 stools at each end of the paper and join the 2 pieces of paper together with adhesive tape after placing the rectangular coil through the 2 holes. Support the coil vertically using the retort stand before connecting the conductor to the rest of the circuit. (Always switch off the circuit when not in use.) 2. Place the plotting compass near one length of the coil. 3. Starting with the maximum resistance on the rheostat, switch on the circuit and observe the compass needle. Gradually decrease the resistance of the rheostat until midway of the rheostat. Mark the N and of the compass needle by pencil dots X and Y. The compass is then moved until one end is exactly over Y and the new position of the other end is marked with a third dot 4. Repeat the process of marking the dots. Join the series of dots and this will give the plot of the field lines of the magnetic field. Questions: 1. When terminals of d.c. supply are reversed, current direction is reversed, hence, according to the right hand grip rule, the direction of magnetic field is reversed. 2. When resistance of rheostat is further decreased, the current flow will increase since e.m.f. remains the same. Hence the magnetic field will be stronger and the spacing between the field lines will be even closer together, so there will be more magnetic field lines per unit area near the conductor compared to previous results.
