Progestin-Only Pills Overview

Progestin-only pills (POPs) contain progestin hormones that suppress ovulation and thicken cervical mucus as a contraceptive. There are 3 POPs that contain either levonorgestrel, norethindrone, or norgestrel. POPs prevent pregnancy primarily by inhibiting ovulation and thickening cervical mucus. They have fewer contraindications than combination oral contraceptives but have less effectiveness if not taken at the same time daily. POPs are generally considered safe for women with certain cardiovascular or liver conditions. Drug interactions with rifampin or anti-epileptics may reduce effectiveness.
