Q1. I. Explain what is meant by ‘orientation’?
Orientation is a function of the mind involving awareness of three dimensions: time, place and
person. But in an organization orientation can be define as “The personnel activity which
introduces new employee to the enterprise and their tasks, superiors and work groups”.
Orientation basically deals with new employees. Orientation should be conscious, planned efforts
by the organization to familiarize the new employees with the organization and the work
comfortably and effectively right from the start.
The first thing to keep in mind is that employee orientation is not a one day overview, but should
be an ongoing process. As employee's job responsibilities increase, continue to introduce him to
new company aspects, as well as remind him of important policies. Different jobs will need
different orientation procedures. Keep files for each job outlining the individual policies for each
position. Many companies extend orientation over a few days or a few months, depending on the
job and the responsibilities.
New employee orientation can have a significant impact on employee engagement, and therefore
satisfaction and retention. When a new employee joining an organization step by step familiar
with the environment, the surroundings, the task he has to do, the place where he to seat and the
nature, role of his task etc.
This is a common thing in an organization and this kind of socialization happens slowly and in
the mean time, the individual will undergo a lot of stress and anxiety. As a outcome of that, the
new employee automatically become slow once he starts to work at the very first time.
But we know that it’s not in practice .Therefore it would be beneficial both individual and the
organization if a well planed effort is made to introduce the new employee to the organization
without waiting for it to happen naturally. So we realize orientation how much important for a
newly joined employee to an organization for his initial commence of work.
