Reading Readiness

Reading readiness is defined as the point at which a person is ready to learn to read and the time during which a person transitions from being a non-reader to a reader. It involves skills such as visual discrimination, phonological awareness, alphabetic knowledge, and vocabulary, as well as psychological factors like emotional maturity, social development, behavior, and interest in reading. Reading readiness is affected by physical, cognitive, emotional, and environmental factors, and failure to develop reading readiness can result in frustration, lack of interest, inattention, discouragement, and poor self-concept.
