Hazard Identification for LPG Installations

Here is my analysis of the hazards and risks of the LPG installation, along with procedures for loading LPG from a lorry tanker to a storage tank: Hazard and Risk Analysis: - LPG is flammable and can form explosive mixtures in air. A leak or ignition source could cause a fire or explosion. - LPG is stored and handled as a liquid under pressure. A leak from pressurized lines or equipment could result in rapid vaporization and spreading of flammable vapors. - Transfer of LPG from the tanker to the storage tank involves high flow rates and potential for leaks at connections. - Static electricity buildup during liquid transfer could provide an ignition source for any leaks

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION METHOD

1. CHECKLIST: HAZARD MATERIAL & PROCESS HAZARD

2. HAZARDS SURVEY (DOW FIRE AND EXPLOSION INDEX)

Checklist during preliminary stages of hazard identification.

Checklists are effective in identifying hazards due to process design,
plant layout, storage of chemicals, electrical systems, and so forth. Also effective
for improper operations or procedures or process aberrations before specific
process is started.

The Dow Index is designed for rating the relative hazards with the storage, handling,
and processing of explosive and flammable material.
PROCESS/SYSTEM CHECKLIST

A. MATERIAL: Review the characteristics of all process materials-raw materials,

catalysts, intermediate products, and final products. Obtain detail data on these
materials such as:

1. Flammability
- what is autoignition temperature?
- What is the flash point?
- how can a fire be extinguish?
2. Explosivity
- What are the upper and lower explosive limit?
- Dose the material decompose explosively?
3. Toxicity
- What are the breathing explosure limits (e.e. Threshold limit values,
immediate dangerous to life and health, etc)
- What personnel protective equipment is needed?
4. Corrosivity and Compatibility
- Is the material strongly acidic or basic?
- Are the special materials required to contain it?
- What personnel protective equipment is needed?
5. Waste Disposal
- Can gases be released directly to the atmosphere?
- Can liquids be released directly to a sewer?
- Is a supply of inert gas available for purging equipment?
- How would a leak be detected
6. Storage
- Will any spill be contained?
- Is this material stable in storage?
7. Static electricity
- Is bounding or grounding of equipment needed?
- What is the conductivity of the materials, and how likely are they to
accumulate static?
8. Reactivity
- Critical temperature for auto reaction?
- Reactivity with other componen including intermediate?
- Effect impurities?
