for today & tomorrow
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

It is maintaining a delicate balance between the human

need to improve lifestyles and feeling of well-being on
one hand, and preserving natural resources and
ecosystems, on which we and future generations
depend.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
World Commission on Environment & Development:
• "development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs”
• implies economic growth together with the protection of
environmental quality, each reinforcing the other.
• a stable relationship between human activities and the
natural world, which does not diminish the prospects for
future generations to enjoy a quality of life at least as
good as our own.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
• This concept is rooted in the thinking that “the world is a
system” – a system that connects space; a system that
connects time.
Examples:
A. World as a system of space:
- Air pollution in North America affects air quality in Asia.
B. World as a system of time:
- Decisions made by grandparents about how to farm the land
affects agricultural practices today
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
• It helps us understand ourselves & the world; quality of
life/way of life as a system.
Examples:
Quality of Life as a System:
a. Physically healthy but poor & no access to education
b. Secure source of income but air in your city is unclean
c. Advanced technology but e-waste are more toxic & are
piling up; people becoming sedentary
