Check Valves: By, K.R.Charan

Check valves are valves that allow fluid to flow in only one direction. They prevent backflow. There are several types of check valves including swing check valves, lift check valves, ball check valves, and piston check valves. Check valves are commonly used in pump and compressor discharge piping to prevent backflow. They are also used when multiple gases need to mix in one direction or in irrigation systems. Check valves operate automatically to allow forward flow while preventing backflow without external control mechanisms.

VALVE
 A valve is a device that regulates the flow of
substances (either gases, fluidized solids,
slurries, or liquids) by opening, closing, or
partially obstructing various passageways.
Introduction to Valves
 Device used for closing or modifying the passage
through a pipe, outlet, inlet or likely to stop, allow or
control the flow of a media.

 Valve cost is upto 20 to 30% of the piping cost.

 The size of a valve is mainly determined by the size

of its ends, which connect to the pipe.

Types of vales by Applications
 Stopping valve:- Gate vale is used as complete
isolating equipment for service.
 Gate valve has straight through floe passage
resulting in low pressure loss.
 Regulating flow:- Globe valve, Ball valve,
Butterfly valve used to adjust flow ratw
manually & automatically.

Types ofAPPLICATIONS
vales by Applications
 Pressure regulating Valves:- This valve limits
the discharge pressure to preset value.
 Ex:- Make up water supply to a system.

 Relief Valves:- These valves are used to relief

the boilers from excess pressure. These are
also called as ‘Safety Valves’
Introduction to Check Valves
 Check valves prevent flow reversal.
 Typical check valve applications are in pump and
compressor discharge piping.
 Valves with discs provide lower resistance to flow of
working fluid than those that contain balls or pistons.
 Ball and lift check valves are used for sizes 2" and
smaller.
 Swing check and Plate check valves are used for
higher pipe sizes.
Standards for Valves
 ASME B.16.34 : Steel Valves – Flanged &
Butt welded.

 ASME B.16.10 : Face to face dimensions for

ferrous valves.
Standards for Valves
 API 609 : Butterfly Valves, Lug type and Wafer type.
 API 6D : Specifications for pipeline valves (Gate,
Plug, Ball & Check valves)

Swing Check valve
 The disc swings freely in
the form of an arc.
 Valve is kept open by the
flow and disc seating is
accomplished by gravity
and/or flow reversal.
  When used in vertical
lines the flow should be
upwards only
Lift Check Valve
 Used for sizes ½" to 2".

 Reverse flow forces

piston or ball against
seat.

 Used to control vertical

flow.
Ball Check Valve
 The ball is spring loaded
to shut the valve.

 The interior of the valve

is slightly tapered
conically to guide the ball
in the seat.
Piston Check Valve
 Piston check valves
are often used where
there is an angular
change in flow
stream.
Stop Check Valve
 It has an override control
to stop regardless of flow
direction or pressure.
 It acts as a check valve
when the valve is open.
 Can be deliberately shut
to stop flow.
Advantages of Check Valve
 Check valves can be used when the flow should be
unidirectional.

 Swing check valve can operate even it is installed

horizontally or vertically.

 The pressure drop is lower in a tilting-swing check

valve to the swing check valve.

 Most of the check valves operate automatically.

Disadvantages of Check Valve
 Check valves cannot be used when the flow is
vertically downwards.

 Lift check valves are not recommended for use

in services subject to fouling, coking deposits
or erosion.
Applications of Check Valve
 Check Valve are used in piston-driven and diaphragm
pumps.

 Check valves are often used when multiple gases are

mixed into one gas stream.

 Some types of irrigation sprinklers and drip irrigation

emitters have small check valves.

 They are used in many fluid systems in chemical, power

plants and in many other industrial processes.
