HE Cerro Lindo underground polymetallic
block cave mine of Compañia Milpo SAA is
the home of many examples of dramatic
inventiveness in the South American min-
ing industry. Challenged by a lack of water
in the Peruvian highlands southeast of Lima, the
mining company built a 36litre/s desalinisation plant
to supply fresh water from the sea about 60km away.
To conserve that precious water, the company
built a pair of paste plants at the mine to remove
more than 90% of the water from tailings. More than
half of that paste is mixed with a small amount of

the mill, seen at the top of the photo innovative approach that reduces impacts on the
environment and enhances safety for miners.
Faced with the need to quickly ramp up
production from the moderately-sized mine, the
company put Caterpillar R2900G LHDs to work. The
large loaders, capable of handling 17.2t in one
bucket, are the first R2900s in South America. And
the large LHDs seem destined to set a trend for
medium-sized mines where 10t-capacity LHDs have
been the standard.
The fresh approach to solving problems came
from within the Lima-based company. “Cerro Lindo is
a Peruvian project,” says Germán Arce, general
manager of Cerro Lindo. “The mine was designed by
Peruvian people for Peruvian people. And I’m proud
to say that we have a productive, safe mine that has
minimal impact on the environment.”
The block caving mining operation officially
started producing in July 2007 using three Caterpillar
R1600G LHDs, which initially were used for
development work, and two Caterpillar R2900G
LHDs. Cerro Lindo now produces 5,400t/d of ore and
is on target to produce 10,000t/d by the end of 2009.
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that the
mine is already profitable early in its life, which is
even more surprising given the relatively low ore
grades. The volcanic massive sulphide deposit

Metso Minerals
Metso Minerals manufactures two main types of
flotation cell. The RCS flotation machine is its current
global standard product and can be produced in a
range of sizes, from 0.8m³ to 200m³ per cell. The RCS
is a circular cell with features designed to promote
effective particle-bubble contact in both the body of
the cell and the high-energy zone within the
mechanism.
The shape of the cell also prevents sanding and
helps to eliminate short-circuiting. The cell has been
designed so that the top is fully covered, and a
single-side froth discharge simplifies froth handling.
The patented RCS mechanism is designed to
combine primary radial pumping for suspension,
with secondary slurry recirculation to the deep vane
impeller, to improve ultra-fine particle recovery.
The flow patterns created by the mechanism are
enhanced by the circular cell, helping to create a used together with finite element analysis for The bank of three Outotec TankCell-300 flotation

installations at several oil sands projects, where the
flotation machines have been adapted to operate in
the open air, even during harsh winter conditions.
This enables valuable indoor space to be used for
other purposes, thus reducing building costs.
Outotec attributes its successful R&D to the
operational background inherited from Outokumpu.
The company believes this helps it to foresee
potential operational problems and set R&D targets
that are desirable to its customers. Current areas of
interest include CFD, froth handling and automation.
One recent development is the company’s focus
on life cycle cost, which is based on using larger cells
in the reduction of maintenance and operating costs,
increasing reliability and reducing emissions, giving
customers value for money while reducing the
environmental impact of the machines.
The company also markets and sells its HSC
chemistry software package which allows conceptual
circuit design to maximise flotation circuit efficiency.
In addition, in March 2008, Outotec teamed up
with the Geological Survey of Finland. The
collaboration uses world-class resources and facilities
for testing plant designs and scale-up models.
Throughput capacities for the facilities range from
laboratory scale to mini-pilot and up to 1-5t/hr in a Testing of Siemens’ first 16m3 hybrid cell at Los Pelambres

ENGINEERING RECRUITMENT
Hitachi has developed an ultra-reliable and durable range of EX-6 excavators and
AC drive dump trucks. They are working 24/7 to deliver higher levels of power,
performance and productivity. Hitachi is setting new standards in comfort and safety,
and for ease of access and maintenance. The giants of mining offer lower running
costs and a higher return on investment.
Whatever drilling need you have in your open pit or quarry, the
best choice is the ROC L8 series from Atlas Copco. We offer high
productivity and flexibility beyond conventional mining rigs. With
the same rig you can drill your production holes, improve
stripping ratio with double benching and pre-splitting and control
your dilution with reverse circulation sampling option.
The design and functionality differences between sizers and double-roll crushers significantly affect their application in mining operations. Sizers generally have smaller diameter shafts with large teeth, allowing them to accommodate larger feed sizes and operate effectively with sticky materials due to their shear crushing mechanism. This makes them ideal for both primary and secondary applications, particularly underground, where a lower profile is needed. Conversely, double-roll crushers, which rely on compression, have larger diameter rolls and are well-suited for producing finer material. The kinetic energy they use from high rotating masses makes them better suited for applications requiring high torque, like soft rock crushing. These characteristics determine which crusher type is more appropriate based on material properties and operational constraints .
The use of double-roll crushers in underground applications is challenged by their size/weight and the higher installation height required, which limits their applicability where low-profile equipment is necessary. These crushers rely on compression, which performs well for producing finer material but can struggle with handling sticky materials due to lower circumferential speed. In contrast, sizers, with their smaller profile and shear crushing mechanism, are more suitable for underground use when dealing with larger feed sizes and sticky materials. Sizers offer higher torque at lower speeds, which allows them to be more versatile and effective in diverse underground conditions .
Mining companies leverage advancements in flotation technology by utilizing different flotation cell designs tailored to specific ore characteristics, thereby optimizing mineral recovery. Companies like FLSmidth offer multiple types of cells like the Wemco self-aspirated cell and various forced-air cells, allowing operators to tailor the flotation process to specific operational requirements. Larger cell sizes enhance efficiency by requiring fewer units, which lowers capital and operational costs. Innovations such as the Wemco Inert Gas flotation cell offer unique benefits in specific separations like copper-molybdenum, where an oxygen-free environment is advantageous. Companies also incorporate control systems and froth-imaging technologies to optimize flotation performance in real-time, which helps maximize recovery and grade while minimizing waste .
The increasing demand for electric LHDs in the mining industry is driven by a need for more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions. Electric LHDs offer the advantage of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and are becoming more attractive as companies seek to meet tougher environmental regulations and sustainability goals. Moreover, electric vehicles can provide operational cost savings over time, such as reduced fuel costs and maintenance. The document notes that several companies are actively exploring the development of electric LHDs due to this demand .
The commonality of parts plays a crucial role in Caterpillar's competitive strategy, as it enhances operational efficiency, reduces inventory costs, and ensures better serviceability across its equipment lines. This strategy enables customers to use a wide range of Caterpillar products with the confidence that parts are interchangeable and readily available, thus minimizing downtime. It increases the reliability of machine performance since all components are designed to work seamlessly together. Such integration underlines Caterpillar's ability to provide comprehensive solutions to mining operations, thereby strengthening its market position as a provider of integrated mining equipment systems .
Higher precious metal prices have positively impacted the narrow-vein mining sector by stimulating increased demand for specific types of mining equipment. Due to higher metal prices, there is a greater focus on extracting high-quality ore, which benefits suppliers of smaller LHD models specifically suited for narrow-vein operations. These machines are not tonnage-driven; rather, they are focused on the quality of extracted high-grade ore. The demand is less about volume and more about value, benefiting companies that supply equipment designed to operate within the constrained conditions of narrow-vein mining .
Establishing multiple manufacturing plants for LHDs in global markets is strategically important for companies to enhance production capacity, reduce lead times, and respond quickly to local market demands. By diversifying production facilities geographically, companies can mitigate risks associated with supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties. For instance, Caterpillar's new assembly line in Brazil, alongside the existing plant in Tasmania, allows for a diversified production base that can better serve South American markets while freeing up capacity at the original site. This strategy not only supports increased production to meet global demand but also positions companies to take advantage of regional market opportunities more effectively .
The key benefits of using Caterpillar's new Mechanically Attached Shroud System for LHDs include increased cutting-edge life and reduced downtime. The 'hammerless' installation and removal feature simplifies the process of changing shroud segments, enhancing safety and efficiency by requiring no special tools. This system reduces the maintenance time needed for bucket shroud replacement, thereby increasing overall productivity. By improving wear resistance on LHD buckets, the system helps maintain equipment performance and reduces the frequency of replacements, leading to cost savings in terms of both time and materials .
Developments in automation technology have significantly impacted the use of LHDs in mining by increasing safety and operational efficiency. Automated systems such as Sandvik’s Automine and Caterpillar’s Minegem have enabled the operation of LHDs remotely, reducing the need for personnel in potentially hazardous underground environments. Automation enhances precision in operations and reduces the risk of equipment damage from human error. Atlas Copco's rollout of automation solutions on models like the ST14 reflects a broader industry trend towards integrating automated technologies to meet demands for higher productivity and increased mine safety .
Caterpillar claims several competitive advantages in the underground mining equipment market, including the commonality of parts across its surface and underground equipment lines, which enhances parts availability and serviceability. This integration is accompanied by the phrase "fully integrated," emphasizing that all components are designed to work optimally together. Additionally, Caterpillar has developed its LHD wear-parts range to extend the life of the equipment, such as the Mechanically Attached Shroud System that facilitates quick installation and removal of wear parts. This system reduces downtime and boosts productivity. Another advantage is Caterpillar's extensive dealer network that supports global sales and service .
