Morphine and Codeine Drug Overview

Morphine and codeine are opioid analgesics used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Morphine is also used to relieve dyspnea and pulmonary edema associated with acute left ventricle failure and myocardial infarction. Codeine is also used as an antitussive to suppress cough. Both drugs work by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system to alter pain perception and response while causing generalized central nervous system depression. Common adverse effects include sedation, hypotension, constipation, nausea, and vomiting. They should be used cautiously in patients with hypersensitivity, asthma, increased intracranial pressure, or hepatic/renal dysfunction. Nursing considerations include monitoring vital signs, pain level, and side effects before and during administration.
