Understanding Psalm 23: The Good Shepherd

This document provides an in-depth analysis and commentary on Psalm 23. It discusses: - Psalm 23 refers to God as the shepherd who provides for and protects his flock. - Jesus is described as the ultimate fulfillment of the role of the good shepherd, as he laid down his life for his sheep. - The document examines each verse of Psalm 23 and compares it to passages in the New Testament that further illustrate how Jesus is the good shepherd. - It also warns that there will be false prophets or "wolves" that attempt to mislead the flock, but the sheep of Jesus will be protected and know his voice.

Psalm 23

Psalm A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

23:1
A Psalm of David.
David is the Old Testament shadow or type of Jesus as good shepherd and
king.

David as a type of Christ:

II Samuel 8:15; Ezekiel 37:24; Psalms 89:19,20; Philippians 2:9
Ezekiel And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall
37:24 have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and
observe my statutes, and do them.

The LORD is my shepherd.

I. Psalms 22, 23, and 24 are the Psalms of the shepherd;

Psalm 22 is the Psalm of the good shepherd that lays his life down for the
sheep, Psalm 23 is the Psalm of the great shepherd of the resurrection, and
Psalm 24 is the Psalm of the Chief shepherd that shall appear.

A. Psalm 22 is the Psalm of the good shepherd lays down his

life for the sheep.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the
sheep.

Psalm 22, the previous Psalm, starts out by asking the questions: My God,
my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me,
and from the words of my roaring?

Psalm 22 is the Psalm of the cross; where there are no green pastures, and
no still waters. It is only after we have read; "My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?" that we come to the comforting words that begin in Psalm
23 "The Lord is my Shepherd."

Charles H Spurgeon (1834-1892) - Exposition of Psalm 23 from The Treasury of

David:
We must by experience know the value of blood-shedding, and see the sword
awakened against the Shepherd, before we shall be able truly to know the
Sweetness of the good Shepherd's care.
Deuteronomy When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon
4:30 thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy
God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;
Deuteronomy (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not
4:31 forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of
thy fathers which he sware unto them.
B. Psalm 23 is the Psalm of the great shepherd of the
resurrection.
Hebrews Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our
13:20 Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of
the everlasting covenant,
Hebrews Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you
13:21 that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to
whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

C. Psalm 24 is the Psalm of the chief shepherd that shall

appear. Just like the Psalms of the shepherd start with a
question in Psalm 22, the Psalms of the shepherd ends with
a question and answer in Psalm 24:
Psalm Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD
24:8 mighty in battle.
Psalm Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting
24:9 doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Psalm Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of
24:10 glory. Selah.

I Peter And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown
5:4 of glory that fadeth not away.

We see the crucifixion in Psalm 22, the resurrection where Messiah walks
through the valley of the shadow of death, and defeats death in Psalm 23,
and the second coming of Jesus Christ in Psalm 24.

Psalm 23 starts out with words of comfort: the LORD is my shepherd; I shall
not want. This verse is very personalized; The LORD is MY shepherd. Those
who believe and trust in the LORD can truly say that the LORD is “MY”
shepherd, just like the good shepherd says I know “MY” sheep.
John I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
10:14
John As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down
10:15 my life for the sheep.

II. The good shepherd paid a price:

A sheep is an object of property, not a wild animal. It is valuable to its owner

and commonly bought with a great price. Jesus, our good shepherd, paid a
great price:
I Corinthians For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your
6:20 body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

III. The Good shepherd is Jesus Christ:

The shepherd is identified as God in these Psalms. The personal name of
God, Jehovah, is being used.

In John chapter 10, Jesus tells us that He is the good shepherd, therefore
Jesus is telling us that He is God:
John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into
the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief
and a robber.
John 10:2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
John 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he
calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
John 10:4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and
the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
John 10:5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they
know not the voice of strangers.
John 10:6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what
things they were which he spake unto them.
John 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am
the door of the sheep.
John 10:8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep
did not hear them.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall
go in and out, and find pasture.
John The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am
10:10 come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.
John I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the
10:11 sheep.
John But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep
10:12 are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and
the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
John The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the
10:13 sheep.
John I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of
10:14 mine.
The shepherd leads the sheep. On the other hand, you have a hireling that
walks behind the sheep. The hireling does not lead the sheep; he drives the
sheep from behind towards the slaughter house.

IV. How can we tell who the wolves are?

Matthew Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing,
7:15 but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Matthew Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of
7:16 thorns, or figs of thistles?
Matthew Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt
7:17 tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Matthew A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree
7:18 bring forth good fruit.
Matthew Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and
7:19 cast into the fire.
Matthew Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
7:20
A. God’s guidance in dealing with the wolves:
Matthew Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye
10:16 therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Matthew But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils,
10:17 and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
Matthew And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake,
10:18 for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
Matthew But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye
10:19 shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye
shall speak.
Matthew For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which
10:20 speaketh in you.
B. Paul warns that grievous wolves will enter in among the flock
and arise up from within the flock:
Acts Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the
20:28 which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of
God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Acts For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter
20:29 in among you, not sparing the flock.
Acts Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to
20:30 draw away disciples after them.
C. The grievous wolves that draw away disciples after
themselves and away from the Lord have the spirit of the
antichrist.
I John Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist
2:18 shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that
it is the last time.
I John They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been
2:19 of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went
out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
I John But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
2:20

V. How can we tell if we’re Christ’s sheep?

When there are so many flocks of sheep, it is necessary to mark them. Our
Savior marks us. There are two marks on Christ's sheep. One is on their ear;
the other is on their foot.
John My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
10:27
John And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither
10:28 shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
These are the two marks of Christ's sheep:
The mark on the ear: "My sheep hear my voice."
The mark on the foot: "I know them, and they follow me."
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
If another shepherd is able to get someone in the congregation to turn away
from Christ, and not hear Christ’s voice, the it is made manifest that they
don’t belong to Christ:
I John They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of
2:19 us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that
they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Those who belong to the Lord, do his will and follow Him. Jesus calls his
own sheep by name, as opposed to the beast; that makes his followers take
the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Revelation And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,
13:16 to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelation And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the
13:17 name of the beast, or the number of his name.

VI. The word for shepherd and the word for pastor are the same word in
both the Hebrew and in the Greek.

shepherd: H7462
h[r Ra`ah (raw-aw');  Verb, Strong #: 7462
Example:
Jeremiah As for me, I have not hastened from being a pastor to follow thee:
17:16 neither have I desired the woeful day; thou knowest: that which
came out of my lips was right before thee.

shepherd: G4166
poimhvn Poimen (poy-mane');  Noun Masculine, Strong #: 4166
Example used as shepherd in the Greek:
Matthew But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on
9:36 them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep
having no shepherd.
Example used as pastor in the Greek:
Ephesians And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
4:11 evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
I shall not want.
want: H2637
rox Chacer (khaw-sare');  Verb, Strong #: 2637

1. to lack, be without, decrease, be lacking, have a need

a. (Qal)
1. to lack
2. to be lacking
3. to diminish, decrease
b. (Piel) to cause to lack

c. (Hiphil) to cause to be lacking

I shall not want means I shall not lack.
Psalm A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many
37:16 wicked.

Proverbs The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but
10:3 he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
God knows what things we have need of, before we ask him:
Matthew But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for
6:7 they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Matthew Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what
6:8 things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
The poor widow in Mark 12:44 trusted God so much that she out of her
want (or poverty) did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
Luke Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have
12:24 storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye
better than the fowls?
God’s grace is sufficient:
II Corinthians For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I
12:6 will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think
of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of
me.
II Corinthians And lest I should be exalted above measure through the
12:7 abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in
the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be
exalted above measure.
II Corinthians For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart
12:8 from me.
II Corinthians And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my
12:9 strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will
I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may
rest upon me.
II Corinthians Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in
12:10 necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for
when I am weak, then am I strong.
This verse is not a license to ask for all your wants so that you can consume it on
your lusts, this is a promise from God that if we trust in Him and do His will,
then we will not lack.
James From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not
4:1 hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
James Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye
4:2 fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
James Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it
4:3 upon your lusts.
amiss: G2560
kakw'ß Kakos (kak-oce');
Word Origin: Greek,  Adverb, Strong #: 2560

1. miserable, to be ill
2. improperly, wrongly

3. to speak ill of, revile, one

Many times we’ll ask for something for the purpose boosting our own pride.
Luke And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's
12:15 life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
We should beware of covetousness ask according to his will:
I John And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any
5:14 thing according to his will, he heareth us:
I John And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we
5:15 have the petitions that we desired of him.

What is covetousness?
Dictionary Definition:
Covetousness
Noun
1. An envious eagerness to possess something.
2. Extreme greed for material wealth.
3. Reprehensible acquisitiveness; insatiable desire for wealth (personified as one
of the deadly sins).

Biblical Definition:
Colossians When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also
3:4 appear with him in glory.
Colossians Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;
3:5 fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence,
and covetousness, which is idolatry:
Colossians For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of
3:6 disobedience:
Colossians In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
3:7
Just like the promise that God make in Deuteronomy [Link]
Hebrews Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content
13:5 with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave
thee, nor forsake thee.
Psalm He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still
23:2 waters.
To lie down in green pastures is to have rest, the green pastures represent
feeding on God’s word, and the still waters represent peace.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

I. Lie down = Rest (There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.)

Hebrews 4:8 is actually speaking of Joshua. The writer confirms the fate of
those who do not believe; they shall never enter into this spiritual rest,
either of grace here or glory hereafter.
Hebrews 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have
spoken of another day.
Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Hebrews For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his
4:10 own works, as God did from his.
Hebrews Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after
4:11 the same example of unbelief.

II. Green pastures = Feeding on God’s word (It is written, That man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every word of God.)

The regions in Israel where shepherds live are predominantly wilderness

areas. Sheep that graze in the wilderness receive enough nourishment for
the moment, but no more. From day to day, the sheep depend on their
shepherd to lead them to green pastures and water they need.

Charles H Spurgeon (1834-1892) - Exposition of Psalm 23 from The Treasury of

David:
What are these "green pastures" but the Scriptures of truth always fresh, always
rich, and never exhausted? There is no fear of biting the bare ground where the
grass is long enough for the flock to lie down in it. Sweet and full are the
doctrines of the gospel; fit food for souls, as tender grass is natural nutriment
for sheep.

"He maketh me to lie down." It is the Lord who graciously enables us to

perceive the preciousness of his truth, and to feed upon it.
Isaiah He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with
40:11 his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that
are with young.
What do Christ’s sheep crave?
Matthew Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for
5:6 they shall be filled.
What do Christ’s sheep live on?
Luke And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this
4:3 stone that it be made bread.
Luke And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live
4:4 by bread alone, but by every word of God.
The true bread from heaven:
John Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them
6:31 bread from heaven to eat.
John Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave
6:32 you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread
from heaven.
John For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth
6:33 life unto the world.
John Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
6:34
John And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me
6:35 shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: = he that cometh to me shall never

hunger;

he leadeth me beside the still waters. = and he that believeth on me shall never
thirst.

he leadeth me beside the still waters.

III. The still waters = Peace (a well of water springing up into everlasting
life.)
John There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her,
4:7 Give me to drink.
John (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
4:8
John Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a
4:9 Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews
have no dealings with the Samaritans.
John Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and
4:10 who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked
of him, and he would have given thee living water.
John The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the
4:11 well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
John Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank
4:12 thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
John Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water
4:13 shall thirst again:
John But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall
4:14 never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a
well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying,
7:37 If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
John He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly
7:38 shall flow rivers of living water.
John (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should
7:39 receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was
not yet glorified.)
The fountain of the water of life:
Revelation And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the
21:6 beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the
fountain of the water of life freely.
Revelation He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God,
21:7 and he shall be my son.
The sheep are drawn to the dangerous rushing waters, but the shepherd
who is responsible for the safety of the sheep, leads them away from the
dangerous rushing waters and towards the still waters. These dangerous
rushing waters are called ‘wadis’

wa·di
Pronunciation: wä-dē\
Function: noun
Etymology: Arabic wādi
Date: 1828
1 : the bed or valley of a stream in regions of southwestern Asia and northern
Africa that is usually dry except during the rainy season and that often forms an
oasis : gully, wash
2 : a shallow usually sharply defined depression in a desert region

Especially dangerous during winter season, this is rainy season in Israel.

That why Jesus said But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, in
Matthew 24:20.

What are some of the distractions (rushing waters) that we need to be

conscious of?
I John For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the
2:16 eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
I John And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the
2:17 will of God abideth for ever.
Psalm He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's
23:3 sake.
He restoreth my soul:
I. Restoration

When our soul grows sorrowful, Jesus restores it:

Matthew Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will
11:28 give you rest.
Matthew Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and
11:29 lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Matthew For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
11:30
When our soul is sinful, Jesus sanctifies it:
James Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and
1:21 receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your
souls.
When our soul is weak, Jesus strengthens it:
I Peter For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the
2:25 Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

II. Leadership (Led by the Spirit)
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of
God.

III Righteousness

We cannot attain a right relationship with God in our own righteousness, because
our self-righteousness is as filthy rags.
Isaiah But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as
64:6 filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the
wind, have taken us away.
Jesus is our righteousness:
I Corinthians But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us
1:30 wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
I Corinthians That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in
1:31 the Lord.

I John If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth
2:29 righteousness is born of him.

IV. His names sake

John And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples,
20:30 which are not written in this book:
John But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ,
20:31 the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his
name.

Acts Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name
4:10 of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from
the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is
4:11 become the head of the corner.
Acts Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
4:12 under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Psalm Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
23:4 for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
Between Jericho and Jerusalem there is an old Roman road called the
Valley of the shadow of death. Some Israeli tours will take you through this
valley.

The shepherds had to take their sheep through this valley in order to get to
green pastures, but they had to contend with robbers, thieves, wolves, lions
and other wild animals, so they had to get to that valley before sundown or
else they’d risk loosing a sheep. There is no way sheep could make it
through on their own, they need a good shepherd that knows every path and
every step to take.

The valley of the shadow of death is a valley we must all walk through, but
Jesus is going to lead us through. Jesus defeated death.

He will not leave us there to die. A shadow let’s you know that the real thing
is around the corner, but a shadow cannot hurt you as long as you are
following the shepherd.
John Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never
8:51 see death.

I Corinthians If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men
15:19 most miserable.
I Corinthians But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits
15:20 of them that slept.
I Corinthians For since by man came death, by man came also the
15:21 resurrection of the dead.
I Corinthians For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
15:22
I Corinthians But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward
15:23 they that are Christ's at his coming.
I Corinthians Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the
15:24 kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down
all rule and all authority and power.
I Corinthians For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
15:25
I Corinthians The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
15:26

For the believer to die is gain.

Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
When you let the Lord fight your battles, you will win every time.
Revelation And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things
2:8 saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
Revelation I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich)
2:9 and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and
are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Revelation Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil
2:10 shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye
shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I
will give thee a crown of life.
Revelation He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the
2:11 churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second
death.

Revelation And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was
20:4 given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded
for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had
not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received
his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and
reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Revelation But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years
20:5 were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Revelation Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection:
20:6 on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be
priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a
thousand years.
Revelation And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out
20:7 of his prison,
Revelation And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four
20:8 quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to
battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
Revelation And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the
20:9 camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down
from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
Revelation And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and
20:10 brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be
tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose
20:11 face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no
place for them.
Revelation And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the
20:12 books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the
book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which
were written in the books, according to their works.
Revelation And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell
20:13 delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged
every man according to their works.
Revelation And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the
20:14 second death.
Revelation And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
20:15 into the lake of fire.
The first mention of the shadow of death:
Job After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.
3:1
Job And Job spake, and said,
3:2
Job Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said,
3:3 There is a man child conceived.
Job Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the
3:4 light shine upon it.
Job Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon
3:5 it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
The last mention of the shadow of death
Luke And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou
1:76 shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
Luke To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of
1:77 their sins,
Luke Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on
1:78 high hath visited us,
Luke To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of
1:79 death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

I will fear no evil:

II Timothy For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of
1:7 love, and of a sound mind.

for thou art with me;

I Peter Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which
1:3 according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively
hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
I Peter To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away,
1:4 reserved in heaven for you,
I Peter Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation
1:5 ready to be revealed in the last time.

thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

The rod is used to fight off the enemy, and the staff is used to keep the
sheep in line.

The hope that we have in him is the staff that the Holy Spirit uses keeps us
in line. The Holy Spirit is our comforter.
I John And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as
3:3 he is pure.
Psalm Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest
23:5 my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

Both David and Christ shared food at a table with their enemies. David with
Ahithophel and Christ with Judas. The enemy is caught off guard in this
parable:
Matthew And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man
22:11 which had not on a wedding garment:
Matthew And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not
22:12 having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
Matthew Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and
22:13 take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew For many are called, but few are chosen.
22:14
If we do the will of God, we are promised that we WILL have enemies:
John If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
15:18
John If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye
15:19 are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore
the world hateth you.
John Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than
15:20 his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if
they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
John But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because
15:21 they know not him that sent me.
Friendship of the world is enmity with God:
James Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the
4:4 world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the
world is the enemy of God.
Joshua 24:15 reminds us to choose you this day whom ye will serve:
Revelation And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the
19:6 voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings,
saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Revelation Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the
19:7 marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself
ready.
Revelation And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen,
19:8 clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
Revelation And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called
19:9 unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me,
These are the true sayings of God.

thou anointest my head with oil;

Anointing oil used for:

o For anointing to offices of trust
Exodus 29:7; 1 Samuel 10:1; 1 Kings 19:16
o For anointing the sick
Mark 6:13; James 5:14
o In God’s worship
Leviticus 7:10; Numbers 15:4-10

God gives us an anointing:

I John But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
2:20
I John I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because
2:21 ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
I John Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist,
2:22 that denieth the Father and the Son.
I John Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that
2:23 acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
I John Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning.
2:24 If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye
also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
I John And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
2:25
I John These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
2:26
I John But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and
2:27 ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth
you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught
you, ye shall abide in him.
I John And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we
2:28 may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
I John If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth
2:29 righteousness is born of him.

my cup runneth over.

Put your trust in the Lord, and He will bless you:
Malachi Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in
3:10 mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if
I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a
blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Malachi And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not
3:11 destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit
before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
Malachi And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome
3:12 land, saith the LORD of hosts.
Psalm Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will
23:6 dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

Matthew Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
7:10
Matthew If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your
7:11 children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give
good things to them that ask him?
Matthew Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to
7:12 you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Revelation And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal,
22:1 proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Revelation In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was
22:2 there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and
yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for
the healing of the nations.
Revelation And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the
22:3 Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
Revelation And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their
22:4 foreheads.
Revelation And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither
