Understanding Psalm 23: The Good Shepherd
Understanding Psalm 23: The Good Shepherd
Psalm 22 is the Psalm of the good shepherd that lays his life down for the
sheep, Psalm 23 is the Psalm of the great shepherd of the resurrection, and
Psalm 24 is the Psalm of the Chief shepherd that shall appear.
Psalm 22, the previous Psalm, starts out by asking the questions: My God,
my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me,
and from the words of my roaring?
Psalm 22 is the Psalm of the cross; where there are no green pastures, and
no still waters. It is only after we have read; "My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?" that we come to the comforting words that begin in Psalm
23 "The Lord is my Shepherd."
I Peter And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown
5:4 of glory that fadeth not away.
We see the crucifixion in Psalm 22, the resurrection where Messiah walks
through the valley of the shadow of death, and defeats death in Psalm 23,
and the second coming of Jesus Christ in Psalm 24.
Psalm 23 starts out with words of comfort: the LORD is my shepherd; I shall
not want. This verse is very personalized; The LORD is MY shepherd. Those
who believe and trust in the LORD can truly say that the LORD is “MY”
shepherd, just like the good shepherd says I know “MY” sheep.
John I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
10:14
John As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down
10:15 my life for the sheep.
In John chapter 10, Jesus tells us that He is the good shepherd, therefore
Jesus is telling us that He is God:
John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into
the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief
and a robber.
John 10:2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
John 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he
calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
John 10:4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and
the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
John 10:5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they
know not the voice of strangers.
John 10:6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what
things they were which he spake unto them.
John 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am
the door of the sheep.
John 10:8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep
did not hear them.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall
go in and out, and find pasture.
John The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am
10:10 come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.
John I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the
10:11 sheep.
John But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep
10:12 are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and
the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
John The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the
10:13 sheep.
John I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of
10:14 mine.
The shepherd leads the sheep. On the other hand, you have a hireling that
walks behind the sheep. The hireling does not lead the sheep; he drives the
sheep from behind towards the slaughter house.
When there are so many flocks of sheep, it is necessary to mark them. Our
Savior marks us. There are two marks on Christ's sheep. One is on their ear;
the other is on their foot.
John My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
10:27
John And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither
10:28 shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
These are the two marks of Christ's sheep:
The mark on the ear: "My sheep hear my voice."
The mark on the foot: "I know them, and they follow me."
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
If another shepherd is able to get someone in the congregation to turn away
from Christ, and not hear Christ’s voice, the it is made manifest that they
don’t belong to Christ:
I John They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of
2:19 us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that
they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Those who belong to the Lord, do his will and follow Him. Jesus calls his
own sheep by name, as opposed to the beast; that makes his followers take
the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Revelation And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,
13:16 to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelation And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the
13:17 name of the beast, or the number of his name.
VI. The word for shepherd and the word for pastor are the same word in
both the Hebrew and in the Greek.
shepherd: H7462
h[r Ra`ah (raw-aw'); Verb, Strong #: 7462
Example:
Jeremiah As for me, I have not hastened from being a pastor to follow thee:
17:16 neither have I desired the woeful day; thou knowest: that which
came out of my lips was right before thee.
shepherd: G4166
poimhvn Poimen (poy-mane'); Noun Masculine, Strong #: 4166
Example used as shepherd in the Greek:
Matthew But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on
9:36 them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep
having no shepherd.
Example used as pastor in the Greek:
Ephesians And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
4:11 evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
I shall not want.
want: H2637
rox Chacer (khaw-sare'); Verb, Strong #: 2637
Proverbs The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but
10:3 he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
God knows what things we have need of, before we ask him:
Matthew But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for
6:7 they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Matthew Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what
6:8 things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
The poor widow in Mark 12:44 trusted God so much that she out of her
want (or poverty) did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
Luke Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have
12:24 storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye
better than the fowls?
God’s grace is sufficient:
II Corinthians For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I
12:6 will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think
of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of
me.
II Corinthians And lest I should be exalted above measure through the
12:7 abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in
the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be
exalted above measure.
II Corinthians For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart
12:8 from me.
II Corinthians And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my
12:9 strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will
I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may
rest upon me.
II Corinthians Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in
12:10 necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for
when I am weak, then am I strong.
This verse is not a license to ask for all your wants so that you can consume it on
your lusts, this is a promise from God that if we trust in Him and do His will,
then we will not lack.
James From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not
4:1 hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
James Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye
4:2 fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
James Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it
4:3 upon your lusts.
amiss: G2560

Colossians When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also
3:4 appear with him in glory.
Colossians Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;
3:5 fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence,
and covetousness, which is idolatry:
Colossians For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of
3:6 disobedience:
Colossians In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
3:7
Just like the promise that God make in Deuteronomy [Link]
Hebrews Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content
13:5 with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave
thee, nor forsake thee.
Psalm He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still
23:2 waters.
To lie down in green pastures is to have rest, the green pastures represent
feeding on God’s word, and the still waters represent peace.
Hebrews 4:8 is actually speaking of Joshua. The writer confirms the fate of
those who do not believe; they shall never enter into this spiritual rest,
either of grace here or glory hereafter.
Hebrews 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have
spoken of another day.
Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Hebrews For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his
4:10 own works, as God did from his.
Hebrews Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after
4:11 the same example of unbelief.
II. Green pastures = Feeding on God’s word (It is written, That man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every word of God.)
he leadeth me beside the still waters. = and he that believeth on me shall never
thirst.
John In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying,
7:37 If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
John He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly
7:38 shall flow rivers of living water.
John (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should
7:39 receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was
not yet glorified.)
The fountain of the water of life:
Revelation And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the
21:6 beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the
fountain of the water of life freely.
Revelation He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God,
21:7 and he shall be my son.
The sheep are drawn to the dangerous rushing waters, but the shepherd
who is responsible for the safety of the sheep, leads them away from the
dangerous rushing waters and towards the still waters. These dangerous
rushing waters are called ‘wadis’

III Righteousness
We cannot attain a right relationship with God in our own righteousness, because
our self-righteousness is as filthy rags.
Isaiah But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as
64:6 filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the
wind, have taken us away.
Jesus is our righteousness:
I Corinthians But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us
1:30 wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
I Corinthians That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in
1:31 the Lord.
I John If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth
2:29 righteousness is born of him.
Acts Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name
4:10 of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from
the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is
4:11 become the head of the corner.
Acts Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
4:12 under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Psalm Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
23:4 for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
Between Jericho and Jerusalem there is an old Roman road called the
Valley of the shadow of death. Some Israeli tours will take you through this
valley.
The shepherds had to take their sheep through this valley in order to get to
green pastures, but they had to contend with robbers, thieves, wolves, lions
and other wild animals, so they had to get to that valley before sundown or
else they’d risk loosing a sheep. There is no way sheep could make it
through on their own, they need a good shepherd that knows every path and
every step to take.
The valley of the shadow of death is a valley we must all walk through, but
Jesus is going to lead us through. Jesus defeated death.
He will not leave us there to die. A shadow let’s you know that the real thing
is around the corner, but a shadow cannot hurt you as long as you are
following the shepherd.
John Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never
8:51 see death.
I Corinthians If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men
15:19 most miserable.
I Corinthians But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits
15:20 of them that slept.
I Corinthians For since by man came death, by man came also the
15:21 resurrection of the dead.
I Corinthians For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
15:22
I Corinthians But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward
15:23 they that are Christ's at his coming.
I Corinthians Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the
15:24 kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down
all rule and all authority and power.
I Corinthians For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
15:25
I Corinthians The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
15:26
Revelation And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was
20:4 given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded
for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had
not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received
his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and
reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Revelation But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years
20:5 were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Revelation Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection:
20:6 on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be
priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a
thousand years.
Revelation And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out
20:7 of his prison,
Revelation And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four
20:8 quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to
battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
Revelation And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the
20:9 camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down
from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
Revelation And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and
20:10 brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be
tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose
20:11 face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no
place for them.
Revelation And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the
20:12 books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the
book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which
were written in the books, according to their works.
Revelation And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell
20:13 delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged
every man according to their works.
Revelation And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the
20:14 second death.
Revelation And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
20:15 into the lake of fire.
The first mention of the shadow of death:
Job After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.
3:1
Job And Job spake, and said,
3:2
Job Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said,
3:3 There is a man child conceived.
Job Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the
3:4 light shine upon it.
Job Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon
3:5 it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
The last mention of the shadow of death
Luke And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou
1:76 shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
Luke To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of
1:77 their sins,
Luke Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on
1:78 high hath visited us,
Luke To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of
1:79 death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
The hope that we have in him is the staff that the Holy Spirit uses keeps us
in line. The Holy Spirit is our comforter.
I John And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as
3:3 he is pure.
Psalm Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest
23:5 my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
