Stafffiresafetytrainingshouldbewellwithinthescopeofthemanagementofasmallbusiness.Itcanbecarriedout
inhouse,orbyareputablecompanyorasmallnumberofemployeestrained,byanexternalorganisations,andthey
inturnwouldtraintherestoftheworkforce.Itistheresponsibilityofemployerstoensurethattheirstaffare
adequatelytrainedonwhattodointheeventoffire.Trainingshouldbeshouldbegivenuponinductionand
preferablyasecondtimewithinthefirstmonthofemployment.Refreshertrainingshouldbegivenatleastoncea
year.Trainingshouldbeundertakenbyacompetentpersonandarecordkeptinsomeformoflogbook.

TheSyllabusforFireSafetyTraining
Thethreemainareastoconcentratetheinstructiononare:
TheFireActionPlan,whichformspartofyourfireriskassessment,istheprincipledocumentandshouldbe
fullyunderstoodbyallyouremployees.InformationontheFireEmergencyEvacuationPlan
Theelementsofcombustionandabasicunderstandingonthetheoryoffire.InformationontheFireTriangle
Thetypesoffires,typesofextinguishingagents,identificationoffireextinguishers,useofextinguishers,use
ofhosereels,andtheappropriateextinguisherforeachtypeoffire.Providepracticaltrainingintheuseoffire
extinguishers.InformationonPortableFireExtinguishers
InformationStaffshouldbeawareof
DiscoveringafirePersonnelshouldbemadeawareofthemethodofraisingthealarminapremises,this
shouldincludethepositionofmanualfirealarmcallpointsandtheirmethodofoperation.
HearingthefirealarmPersonnelshouldbemadeawareoftheevacuationproceduresintheirpremises.
Theyshouldbeshownescaperoutesandfinalexits,theyshouldalsobemadeawareoffiredoorsandtheir
purposeinprotectingescaperoutes.
AssemblypointsPersonnelshouldbeshowntheirFireAssemblyPointandmadeawareoftheneedto
ensureeverybodyhavebeenaccountedfor.
CallingtheFireandRescueServicePersonnelshouldbemadeawareofthemethodofcallingthefire
serviceandthelocationoftelephones.
AbasicknowledgeofthetheoryoffireThefiretriangle
UseoffireextinguishersPersonnelshouldbetrainedinthesafeuseoffireextinguishers.Itisnot
acceptabletosayemployeesarenotexpectedtouseanextinguisherandthereforetheydontneedtoknow.

FireSafetyvideosorDVDsareaveryusefultoolwhenconductingfiresafetytraining.Theyshouldnotbeusedas
thesolemethodofinstructionbutcanreinforceawellplannedlecture.Themainproblemistheinformationtendsto
beverygeneralandwillnotcoverthespecificfireproceduresforyourpremises.Youcanselectthosethatclosest
toyourparticularbusinessandareconstructedusingmodulesconcentratingonaparticularaspectoffiresafety.
Thiswillenableyoutodeliverthelecturesorpracticaltrainingoveranumberoflecturesasatrainingsessionshould
notexceed45minutes.
