Haddonfield Memorial High

School celebrated the graduates
of the Class of 2016 on Thursday,
June 16 at the HMHS stadium.
One hundred and ninety one seniors in caps and gowns took their
final steps as high school students
and began steps to their next
journey in life.
On that day, students, administrators, families and friends were
addressed by the Class of 2016
valedictorian Austin Stoner and
salutatorian Lily Kwak, speaking
of memories and giving hope and
inspiration to the class for the future.
The Sun took some time to
speak to Stoner and Kwak on
graduating, their speeches, their
future goals, memories and more.
The Sun: How do you feel about
graduating?
Stoner: I am incredibly proud
to have made it through these
past four years of high school.
For me, it has been a road with a
lot of ups and downs, so to finally
have made it through all the hard-

said, I will certainly miss everybody very dearly. I am very reluctant to leave HMHS and all the
amazing people I have met along
the way. Graduating opens the
doors to me to explore the world
and find where I belong, but I will
never forget this school and my
journey here.
Kwak: It is difficult to say goodbye to so many friends and teachers who have made a difference in
my life. At the same time, though,
I am excited for what is to come:
to start over, to meet new people,
and to enter this huge world.

Gess edges competitors

at Meet of Champions
Briana Gess wins 1,600-meter run in 4:50.09

School junior Briana Gess quest
for a third straight first-place finish in the girls' 1600-meter run at
the NJSIAA spring Meet of
Champions was unlike her previous two.
For starters, Gess didnt have
the fastest seed time entering the
event despite being the two-time
defending champion. Both Ciara
Roche of Freehold Township
High School and Christina Rancan of West Windsor-Plainsboro
South High School had run faster
times than Gess in their respective group championship meets.
Gess also hadnt had anyone
run side-by-side with her down
the stretch in her previous Meet

of
Champions victories.
This
year,
Roche
kept
up with Gess
nearly all the
way until the
finish line.
However,
nothing was
going to keep
GESS
Gess
from
putting her name in the record
books once again. Gess edged
Roche by just less than half a second to win the girls 1,600-meter
run for the third straight year.
Gess is one of only five girls in
state history to win the 1,600meter run three times.

Town America Celebrates the

Commissioners adopt Complete Streets Policy

Policy meant to be a future guide for borough to ensure safer streets for all

Borough commissioners would like to
continue to have Haddonfield be known as
a walkable and friendly town. To do so, a
more detailed Complete Streets Policy was
created.
Commissioners unanimously approved
the policy at their Tuesday, June 14 meeting. The Complete Streets Policy is meant
to be a guide for the boroughs future use to
ensure safer streets for all who use them.
It has some very good ideas, some we
can do right away, some we will have to
take a longer look at, but it does give us a
guidepost for the future, making streets as
friendly as we can for pedestrians, bicyclers and vehicular traffic as well, Com-

missioner Neal Rochford said.

The Complete Streets Policy was
brought about when members of Sustainable Haddonfield and the Environmental
Commission wanted a more detailed policy.
They worked on the document for about
eight to nine months, according to
Rochford.
The purpose is to create a policy that
will provide for integration of all modes of
travel in the design and construction of the
annual road program. The benefits include
improved safety for all travellers, promoting healthy lifestyles, creating a more livable community, improving Haddonfields
walkable community standings, reducing
traffic congestion, limiting greenhouse
gases and improving air quality.
A Complete Street is defined as, a

means to provide safe access for all users

by designing and operating a comprehensive, integrated, connected multi-modal
network of transportation options.
Areas of consideration include bicycle
routes, sidewalks, walking routes, safe
routes
to
school,
crosswalks,
stormwater/green streets and land use requirements.
For implementation, the Complete
Streets Policy and checklist will be used as
a review guide when designing, planning
and constructing a capital project that includes a roadway, whether new or reconstruction, other transportation facility or
any improvement to a municipal complex.

John P. Silvestri was named Nonprofit Organization Chairman of
the Year for 2015 at the recent
NPO Awards Celebration presented by the Nonprofit Development
Center of Southern New Jersey
in partnership with SNJ Business People magazine. Awards
were presented to individuals and
leading not-for-profit organizations in seven categories.
Currently vice chairman of
the Kennedy University Hospital
Board Trustees, Silvestri had
served as chairman of the
Kennedy Health Board for several
years, until the close of 2015, during a time of tremendous growth
for the multi-site health-care system.
With more than 25 years of
service to Kennedy, Silvestri also
serves as chairman of the
Kennedy Property Corporation
Board and the Kennedy Management Group. He is president of
Site Development Inc., of Mt.

Laurel. He has

Richard A. Edwards, a Haddonfield resident for more than 60
years, passed away on June 10 at
the age of 89. He was the husband
of the late Patricia (nee Stone);
beloved father of Pamela Lindsay
(Bruce) of York, Maine, Sandra
Langford (Richard) of Haddon
Heights, Richard A. Edwards, Jr.,
M.D. (Katy) of Corfu, N.Y. and
Gwyneth Edwards (Baron) of San
Diego, Calif.; cherished grandfather of six; and loving great
grandfather of eight.
Mr. Edwards proudly served in
the U.S. Coast Guard during
WWII. He began his career as a
building contractor with his father at Edwards & Sons and eventually became the owner. He volunteered numerous work hours
on the Battleship of New Jersey
and was a member of the Haddonfield Ys Men for many years.
Mr. Edwards family received
friends on Saturday, June 18 at the
First Presbyterian Church of
Haddon Heights, 7th Ave. and
Green St., Haddon Heights, N.J.
08035; where his memorial service followed. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Mr. Edwards

Stoner: Being named valedictorian has been a dream of mine
ever since coming into this school
my freshman year. It has been an
agonizingly long process for me,
and many times I had doubts
about if it would even happen or
not. To finally have this dream of
mine come into fruition is the
most satisfying moment of my
entire life. To be honest, I came
home after hearing the news and
cried with my mom. God has
blessed me tremendously in the
past couple years, and may all the
glory of this award go to Him.
Kwak: It is truly an honor to be
recognized as the HMHS salutatorian this year. We all worked so

Stoner: I am studying molecular biophysics and biochemistry
at Yale University next fall. My
dream is to one day either do cancer research or become a doctor.
Kwak: I will be attending the
Honors College of Rutgers University in the fall. I plan on majoring in cell biology and neuroscience, and I hope to study medicine in the near future.

some of those people, Gess said.
That's been a goal ever since I
was a freshman.
Gess said she knew repeating
as the 1,600-meter run champion
would be a tall task. She wasnt
concerned about her competitors
fast times, however.
I've been trying to focus on not
worrying about the other people,
Gess said. I wanted to focus on
the plan that I wanted to stick to.
This years race felt way different to Gess from start to finish.
The difference was apparent in
the speed of the race. As a freshman, Gess won the 1,600-meter
run at Meet of Champions with a
time of 4:45.97. That year, three
other runners also posted times
under 4:50. This year, Gess winning time was 4:50.09.
We went out pretty slow,
Gess said. Everybody was still

pretty slow with one lap to go.

On the final lap, Gess and
Roche broke away from the other
runners and were nearly side-byside coming down the final
stretch. Gess managed to pull just
ahead and hold off Roche to the
finish line for the victory.
Gess admitted it was easily the
closest race she has run at a Meet
of Champions so far.
The first year I came from behind, but still even in the last 100,
I was ahead of her, Gess said. It
wasn't that neck-and-neck feeling.
I just worked so hard the
whole season, Gess added. You
can't go that far and not give it
your all at the end.
The first-place finish at the
Meet of Champions was just one
accomplishment Gess had to close
out her season. Gess also won the
800-meter run at the NJSIAA
Group II State Championships
and was part of Haddonfields
4x800m relay team that won the
event at the Group II State Cham-

pionships and finished in the top10 at the Meet of Champions.

Next season, Gess will have a
shot to do something only two
other girls have ever done before:
win the girls 1600-meter run at
the spring Meet of Champions for
the fourth time.

resolution in support of the Partnership for Haddonfields Shop
Local Campaign. Part of the campaign is a financial incentive for
Haddonfield taxpayers to patronize participating borough-based
businesses through the payment
of residential property taxes. If
you spend money at a store that
participates, the business will
credit some percentage of the
purchase to residential property
taxes, according to Mayor Jeff
Kasko.
Hamna Khalid was honored
with the 2016 Alvin R. Schomer
Award for her essay in Yes! Magazine entitled Education: Every
Girl's Haq (Right) to Make Her
Voice Heard about amplifying
the voices of those who have been
less fortunate than her to receive
a good education. The award is
given to a youth of Haddonfield
by the Haddonfield Human Relations Commission for outstanding service to the community in
fostering tolerance and diversity
and demonstrating leadership
and strength of character.
A proclamation was given to
the Haddonfield Garden Club for
its 110th anniversary and its commitment to serving the community. The Haddonfield Garden Club
is the oldest garden club in the
state and the third-oldest in the
country.
An ordinance was passed on
second reading, amending the
chapter entitled Curfew. There
is no substance change, according
to Iavicoli. The amendment veri-

fies the fine of up to $1,000 for violators of the ordinance.

Commissioners approved a
number of ordinances on first
reading for the acquisition of a
fire department command vehicle and appropriating $55,000
from the general capital fund for
the costs; amending the borough
code to say the District Management Corporation members will
be appointed and effective June 1
of each year, rather than Jan. 1;
and amending the code to allow
for a maximum of 100 permits to
park for employees. The latter ordinance, if passed, will also include a resolution setting the permits to 40 monthly. The 100 maximum is so the borough doesnt
have to keep changing the number if more are needed in the future.
Commissioners approved a
grant for $1,790.23 for bulletproof
vests and a grant application to be
submitted for $2,500 for the Haddonfield Community Forestry
Plan.
A number of events were
unanimously approved by commissioners. They approved the
Haddonfield Crafts and Fine Arts
Festival on July 9 and 10; Girls
Night Out on July 21; Summer
Sidewalk Sale from Aug. 4 to 7;
Haddonfield Night Market on
Sept. 8; Friday Night Concerts
held every Friday in July; Keith
Schwab Kick-Off Classic on Aug.
27; Police Community Day on
Sept. 24; and Car Seat Installation
on Oct. 15.
The commissioners meeting
planned for June 28 is cancelled,
as commissioners felt it was not
needed. The next meeting starts
the summer schedule of one
meeting per month, rather than
two. The next meetings are July
12 and Aug. 16 at Borough Hall,
starting at 7:30 p.m.

prepared? Can you tell me a little

about your speech?
Stoner: Unfortunately, I found
out that I was valedictorian on a
Tuesday and our graduation is
two days later. This left me very
little time to plan and write my
speech, but I was able to lock myself in my house and get all my
ideas straightened out. It has
some humor in it, but by the end,
I really try to hammer home some
important things to my fellow
classmates. I compare this point
of our lives now to the beginning
of a cross-country race. As we
wait eagerly to graduate and the
race to go off, there are often a lot
of nerves and uncertainty about
what to expect. The key is, we
start this race together, and no
matter if you get out too fast, too
slow or just right, we can all end
up where we belong in this world.

Kwak: The theme of my speech

is that we must open our eyes to
the world of possibilities around
us. High school is merely one step
we take toward making our mark
on the world, whether we plan on
studying, working, traveling, etc.
in the upcoming years.
The Sun: What kind of message
do you want to leave your fellow
graduates with?
Stoner: I want to leave my fellow graduates with the message
that they truly can achieve whatever it is they set out to do. We all
have the opportunity now to take
whatever direction we want and
go at it full speed, and so all
should really take advantage of
that. Being lukewarm about
things in your life is not the best
way to live; rather, find your passion and give everything you can
to be incredible at it. Everybody
can make the most of the circumstances they have now and do
whatever it is they set their
minds to. The Class of 2016 is
comprised of some of the brightest and most amazing kids I know,

and I want them to know that if

they want something bad enough,
they can get it.
Kwak: Maya Angelou, one of
my greatest role models, stated
that people will forget what you
said, people will forget what you
did, but people will never forget
how you made them feel. Class of
2016, we learned so much from
one another. I always felt that we
were a family more so than academic peers. Weve been through
so much together, and I trust that
each and every one of us will look
back on our high school years as
a time when friendships bloomed
and identities developed.
The Sun: Whats your favorite
memory youve had being in the
Haddonfield Public Schools?
Stoner: Selecting one favorite
memory for me is very tough. If I
were to have to pick, I would say
being a part of the student-led a
cappella group Co-Ed. This
year, I was the beat-boxer for this
group and got to perform all over
the place with an incredibly talented group of people. Doing

something like this was completely out of my comfort zone, but by

taking a leap of faith and auditioning, I was able to meet a really
cool group of people that I love
dearly now. The whole experience
has really opened my eyes to just
how amazing the students at Haddonfield are. We are not simply
test scores and athletics here;
rather, we excel at the arts, charity and many other areas as well. I
have made memories and friendships through Co-Ed that will last
a lifetime. Thank you to everyone
in that group for letting me get to
know all of you and constantly
yell Welcome! every day.
Kwak: I moved to Haddonfield
from Ann Arbor, Mich., in the second grade. Since then, I loved
every second I spent as a student
of Haddonfield Public Schools.
The opportunities were limitless,
and the teachers showed me what
it truly means to be passionate
about something. If I had to
choose one aspect of my schooling experience, it'd be the musical
endeavors I've partaken in. I en-

joyed singing with the Madrigals

and school choirs, as well as performing as a violist in the Select
Ensemble. Music continues to
play a major role in my life.
The Sun: Is there anything else
youd like to add?
Stoner: I would just like to
thank my family, especially my
mom, for the guidance and support my entire life. You have all
been by my side and encouraged
me through this whole journey,
and I would not be here today if it
werent for you guys. I often take
for granted the love and passion
you guys show for me, and I am
