Understanding Implicit Racial Bias

Haley Sayo, a sophomore student, chose to study implicit racial bias for her independent research project because she is passionate about social justice. She studied how implicit racism affects daily life, methods for decreasing it, and how demographics can influence it. Throughout the year, Haley collected literature and data, gave presentations, and wrote papers on the topic. Her goal was to learn more about implicit racism and how increasing understanding can help create a more equal world.

Implicit bias
affects

Implicit racial bias is a

pervasive form of racism
that affects thoughts,
actions, and emotions
subconsciously

Implicit bias is
o Found everywhere in
everyone
o Deeply rooted in
subconscious
o Caused by years of built
up thoughts and opinions

o Education: Black
students are suspended
and expelled three
times as much as white
students.
o Criminal Justice:
Minorities are arrested
36% more often than
white people for the
same crimes.
o Medicine: Doctors are
less likely to refer
minorities to
specialists, prescribe
pain medication, or test
for certain diseases due
to their race.
o Employment: Black
and Hispanic men make
30% less than white
men for the same job.
o Housing: Minorities
are shown and offered
12% less homes
compared to white
people.

There are
methods to
decrease implicit
bias!
o Increased
awareness: Being
more aware of the
biases you harbor and
how they affect your
thoughts and actions.
o Exposure to people
who break
stereotypes: Realizing
that physical features
do not define
personality, actions,
etc.
o More relationships
with people of
different races:
