Rain Load Calculation

This document provides design parameters for calculating rain loads and ponding on a roof. It specifies a design rainfall intensity of 38 mm/h and an inlet scupper height of 51 mm. The roof area serviced is 1069.025 m2. The resulting flow rate is calculated as 0.0112931801 m3/s. The static head is 51 mm and hydraulic head is calculated as 76 mm based on interpolation from tables for a 305 mm wide scupper. The total design rain load is then calculated as 5.2(76+51) = 26 psf or 1.2 kN/m2.

Using Tables C8-1 and C8-2, by interpolation,
the flow rate for a 12 in. (305 mm) wide channel
scupper is twice that of a 6 in. (152 mm) wide
channel scupper. Using Tables C8-1 and C8-2, the
hydraulic head, dh, for one-half the flow rate, Q, or
90 gal/min (0.0057 m3/s), through a 6 in. (152 mm)
wide channel scupper is 3 in. (76 mm).
dh = 3 in. (76 mm) for a 12 in. wide (305 mm)
channel scupper with a fl ow rate, Q, of (0.0113 m3/s).
