Understanding Triangles and Polygons

This document discusses different types of triangles and polygons. It defines triangles based on side length as equilateral, isosceles, or scalene. Triangles can also be categorized by angle measures as acute, right, or obtuse. Polygons are closed shapes with straight sides and can be regular, irregular, convex, or concave in shape. The document also discusses drawing triangles accurately, congruence in polygons, and formulas for perimeter, area, and volume.

Lesson 1: Exploring Triangles

We can name sort triangles in a few different ways.
The first way to sort triangles is by SIDE LENGTH. There are 3 types of
triangles to sort using side length.
1. EQUILATERAL TRIANGLES- have 3 equal sides. All angles in an
equilateral triangle are equal as well.
2. ISOSCELES TRIANGLE-This triangle has 2 equal sides
3. SCALENE TRAINGLE- a scalene triangle has no equal sides
HATCH MARKS- are marks that can show us equal sides

Lesson 2: Naming and Sorting Triangles by Angles

1. ACUTE TRIANGLE- a triangle whos angles are all less than 90
degrees
2. RIGHT TRIANGLE- Any triangle that has a 90 degree angle in it.
3. OBTUSE TRIANGLE- Any triangle that has an angle greater than
180 degrees.
** all triangles must have at least 2 acute angles**

Lesson 3: Drawing Triangles

When drawing a triangle it is important to follow the steps CAREFULLY.
Step 1: Sketch the triangle. This gives you an idea of what it should
look like.
Step 2. Start by drawing a side and label it carefully.
Step 3: Add an angle to the line you have drawn
Step 4: Use a ruler to join your angles together

Lesson 4: Investigating Polygons

A polygon is a CLOSED shape with sides
that are STRAIGHT
A REGULAR POLYGON is a shape with all
equal sides and angles
An IRREGULAR POLYGON does not have
equal sides or angles

A CONVEX POLYOGON has all angles less than 180 degrees

A CONCAVE POLYGON has at least one angle that is greater than
180 degrees

Lesson 5: Congruence in Polygons

When polygons match exactly, and are identical, that means
they are CONGRUENT

Lesson 7, 8, & 9: Perimeter, Area and Volume of Polygons

To find Perimeter, add up all sides of a shape
To find Area: Length x Width
To find Volume: Length x Width x Height
