HemarriedEileenO'Shaughnessyin1936andtheyadoptedRichardHoratioBlairin
1944.Shortlyafter,in1945,O'Shaughnessydied.Itwassaidthatthetwohadanopen
marriage.
InDecember1936,OrwelltravelledtoSpaintofightintheSpanishCivilWar.Hefought
againstGeneralFranciscoFranco.Therehewasshotinthearmandthroat.
In1938,hewasdiagnosedwiththe(atthattime)incurabletuberculosis.Hesuffered
fromthisfortheremainderofhislife.
HewasaBBCproducer(picturedabove)in1941.WhentheSecondWorldWarhit,he
beganwritingpropagandabuthateditandlefttoeditasocialistnewspaperin1943.
OrwellmarriedSoniaBrownellinOctober1949.
