Digestive System Overview

The human digestive system begins with the mouth, which chews food and mixes it with saliva. The stomach stores and begins to break down food through protein digestion. Most digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs in the small intestine, where digested food passes into the bloodstream. Undigested waste then moves to the large intestine, rectum and anus to be excreted.
