Overview of the Ramayana Epic

The Ramayana is one of the two great epic poems of India and was composed in Sanskrit by the poet Valmiki. It describes the royal birth of the god Rama in the kingdom of Ayodhya and his tutelage under the sage Vishvamitra. The poem also tells of Rama successfully bending Shiva's mighty bow at a tournament, which wins him the hand of Sita, daughter of King Janaka, in marriage.
