Dress Code

This document discusses dress codes in schools. It begins by asking students to draw what they feel is appropriate or allowed for boys and girls to wear. It then provides information on what dress codes are, how they are determined and enforced. Several examples are given of legal cases and situations where students have been punished or reacted to dress code policies. Common modern dress code rules are outlined, such as the "fingertip rule". The document concludes by discussing how dress codes can be sexist in their treatment of girls and LGBT students, and how students have increasingly protested policies through social media campaigns and walkouts.

Erin Paetz, CeCe Santiago, Sam Murphy, Ana Ruiz

What do you think is appropriate?

Boys, please draw what you feel girls should be able to

wear!
Girls, please draw what you feel boys should be allowed
to wear!
Then, boys send one girl and one guy up to the board to
draw what you guys came up with as a whole!

What is a Dress Code? How do they work?

A Dress Code is a set of rules and regulations that

states what children, boys and girls, are not allowed to
wear.
Boys and girls do not have the same dress code, although
some parts of the codes may be similar.
Generally, the School Board for each district enforces
the Dress Code.
There is no nation-wide Dress Code

The Sexism of school Dress Codes

Sexism: Prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women,
on the basis of sex.
The impact on students:

Negative biased rules can impact girls confidence and sense of self
Dress code makes girls feel self-conscious,ashamed, and uncomfortable in
their own bodies
Causes interruptions in learning in order for teachers to address the
issue.
Constant awareness of their physical identity and how the world reponds to
it.
Humiliation

Examples of Sexism in schools

In some instances, girls must wear brightly colored shirts that can
exacerbate the embarrassment, emblazoned with words like Dress Code
Violator.
19 percent of LGBT students were prevented from wearing clothes that were
thought to be from another gender and that number was higher for
transgender students, nearly 32% of whom have been prevented from wearing
clothes that differed from those designated from their legal sex.
At Cierra Gregersons homecoming dance at Bingham High School in Utah
asked female students to sit against the wall, touch their toes, and lift
their arms to determine whether their outfits were appropriate.
Transgender students are sometimes excluded from yearbooks

How are students reacting?

The growth of platforms like facebook and instagram, along with a

resurgence of student activism, has promoted a major uptick in protests
against attire rules;
#IAmMoreThanADistraction, trending topic on twitter that has
thousands of responses from girls sharing their own experiences.
Hundreds of Change.org petitions
Numerous school walkouts
