Self-assessment and professional learning plan/resilience

Professional Learning Plan

Section 1:
AITSL
Graduate
Standard

Things I need to
work on:

My goals for this aspect:

Strategies to achieve my goals:

I need to work on
developing my
teaching strategies,
to further include the
wider community and
cultural settings.

So far my teaching strategies

consist of what I have been
taught in the classroom, but
not all of them have been
successfully put into practice.
It is my goal during practicum
and early career to absorb as
much information and
acquire as many different
teaching strategies as I can,
as I continue to learn and
grow as a teacher.

I will accomplish this by

participating in Professional
development seminars, learning
from mentor teachers and further
online research. I will learn from
what has worked for other
teachers before me, and critique
it to suit my teaching style and
resources.

(See Appendix
One for AITSL
results)

Standard 1;
Know
students and
how they
learn.

I also need to further

develop my teaching
activities to ensure
the inclusion of
students with
disabilities, special
needs and the highly
gifted. Thus providing
a full range of
students with equal
opportunities.

Standard 2;
Know the
content and
how to teach
it

I need to further
develop the
effectiveness of my
teaching activities
and strategies.
Identify what works,
what might need to
be disregarded, and
what needs to be
altered for next time.
I also need to refresh
my memory on some
learning areas, such
as phonics, basic

During my previous
practicum I had a boy who
was Deaf in my year 5
classroom. I strongly disliked
not being able to directly
communicate with this

relationship with him, based
on that I couldnt speak
AUSLAN. My goal is to
further my professional
development and learn the
necessary skills to at the very
least be able to communicate
and build a relationship with
all students.
My goal as a pre-service
teacher is to refine my
teaching strategies to be
more effective. With limited
experience in the classroom,
only few strategies have
been properly tested.
My goal is to always be
prepared before conducting a
lesson on a learning area I
am less confident with.

Since my second year Practicum,

I have undertaken a Basic
AUSLAN course (My only regret
is that I didnt do it sooner so I
could communicate with this
student.) My ongoing strategy is
to continue learning this
language, in the hope that should
this situation present itself to me
again, I will be better prepared.
While this does require additional
time to learn and maintain the
language, it is a life long skill that
I can use forever. The WA Deaf
Society have created an app to
help students practice the
language.

Through continued learning, and

exposure to new teachers and
their strategies it will make
refining my own teaching
effectiveness. I will achieve this
by optimizing my final
professional placements, and
keeping open communication with
fellow colleagues. To create a
community of teachers to share
resources, lesson plans and
strategies.
In order to be prepared I must be
organized before conducting a

environments
.

Out branching my
resources to include
more ICT.
Learning to integrate
appropriate
opportunities for
parents and carers
into the students
learning.

Learning how to
create a workable
routine that is
effective and
engaging, while
managing student
behavior.

My goal is to learn how to

use smart boards more
effectively. I have not had a
lot of experience using them,
as my previous mentor
teacher did not use them.
It is my goal that once I have
a classroom of my own, I can
make both the parents and
the students feel comfortable
in my classroom.

My goal is that by the end of

my final prac I will know how
to create an effective DWP
(Daily Work Pad).
Additionally that I will be able
to maintain a

(1965) approach to behavior
management; Students need
to feel loved, accepted and
like they belong in an
environment to order to
succeed (Edwards & Watts,
2008).

lesson, have all the necessary

resources and should something
come up that I am not familiar
with, be comfortable enough to
admit that I need to research it
further.
To achieve this I will need to
practice outside of school hours
to get familiar with how the
system works.
In order to make parents part of
your classroom community it is
important that they feel welcome
and comfortable to do so. This
can be achieved by a
communication diary to
encourage student learning both
in class and at home. Or by
actively making an opportunity for
the parents to be included in the
classroom, through guided
reading groups or a bring your
parent to school day.
To confidently learn how to use a
DWP, it will take practice and
advice from mentor teachers:
during Practicum and as an early
career teacher. Improving my
organization strategy will take
time and practice to master.
It is easy for me as a pre-service
teacher to have a preconceived
idea of what it is like to manage a
classroom on my own and how I
would best like this to be
achieved. The reality is, this can
be manipulated by lots of different
factors that are out of our control,
such as the schools discipline
plan, the age of the students and
the responsiveness of the
students in your class to your
approach. Therefore, the best
strategy is the ability to be flexible
and adapt my management
approach accordingly. To ensure
that your classroom philosophy
has the best chance at success it
should closely align to the school
wide community and how the
school operates in regards to
punishment and inclusion (Lightly,
2016).

Standard 5;
Assess,
provide
feedback and
report on
student
learning.

Interpret and analyse

student data for
evaluation and
reporting purposes.

My goal is to have an
organized structure that
assists with assessments.

Standard 6;
Engage in
professional
learning.

Update knowledge
and practices to
target the
professional needs of
the school.

It is my goal to continue
actively learning after my
final practicum.

To participate in all professional

development opportunities
presented to me. Collaborate and
share ideas and strategies with
colleagues.

Standard 7;
Engage
professionally
with
colleagues,
parents/carer
s and the
community.

Establish and
maintain respectful
and collaborative
relationships with
parents/ carers.

My goal is to create a
classroom community in
which parents have the
opportunity to participate in
their childrens learning
should they want to.

I aim to do this by having open

communication with the families
and wider community of my
students by using a take home
diary or communication book,
having an open door policy that
encourages parents to come and
join activities.

Section 2:
BRiTE
Resilience
Factors

Things I need to

My goals for this aspect:

Strategies to achieve my goals:

Create a supportive network

of teachers around me, to
help build my resilience and
theirs.

Maintain good relationships with

coworkers, colleagues, friends
and family, this will support my
ability to be resilient. Learning to
be flexible at work and bounce
back when things get difficult.

I will also hope to learn from

my mentor teachers and
colleagues around me to
further enhance my
knowledge and make
comparable judgements.

Develop an organized checklist

and timetable, to ensure
assessment is being completed
regularly.
Make good relationships with
other teachers in my school and
from my degree. Use these
people as additional resources to
help me develop and grow as a
teacher.

work on:

(See
Appendices
two and three
for Brite
Certificate and
Toolkit)

Building
resilience

Learning how to
effectively use
resilience in the
classroom
environment

Furthermore I aim to continue

to self-reflect as an early
career teacher, to help me
understand what I could be
doing more effectively.
Help students build resilience

Self-reflection will come in the

form of open communication with
mentor teachers, principals and
fellow teachers to continually
develop my strategies for coping
and organization.
In order to help students build
resilience and learn that it is
alright to fail, can be obtained

through creative a safe learning

environment, both physically and
emotionally.
This will take time and effort on
my part to reach out to the
parents and offer support and
open communication. Every
parent will be different and should
be dealt with as so, it is important
that you work together as a team
to support the child.

Relationships

Developing and
maintaining new
relationships with
parents/carers.

My goal is to try and create a

positive and respectful
relationship with all of my
students parents.

Wellbeing

I need to find a better

balance between
work and play.
Whenever things get
a little stressful in my
work life, I put play
on hold. Which
ultimately can do
more damage then
good.

My goal is to change this bad

habit of mine. Instead of
removing myself from my
social life when work gets
busy and stressful, I need to
maintain a better balance.
Making time for the things
that are important, such as
exercise, healthy eating and
maintaining relationships.

In order to achieve this I will need

to be better organized and use
my time wisely. I will wake up an
hour earlier and go for a walk with
my partner. By starting the day in
a productive, healthy manner that
will flow into the rest of my day,
including work life. While this
does require me to go to bed a
little earlier, I find I am more
productive in the mornings then
evenings anyway. This helps
prevent teacher stress and
burnouts.

Taking
initiative

Learn to accept that

despite my best
efforts, I can not plan
for everything. It is
important to learn to
be flexible and
adaptable.

My goal is to further develop

the necessary tools and skills
to easily adapt when things
dont go as planned.

This requires me to further

develop my problem solving
skills. In the classroom schedules
change, people are sick and its
out of our control. What is
important as a teacher is that the
show goes on. The lesson must
be easily adaptable and
additional resources always kept
close by.

Emotions

I need to learn to
better manage my
emotions, especially
in a professional
environment.

My goal is to not let my

emotions affect how I act or
treat other people, and learn
to recognize that my
emotions are playing a part in
my immediate reaction,
before saying or doing
anything.

In order to achieve this I will learn

to take a deep breath or a
moment to myself and think about
why I might be feeling this way.
Learn to act, not react.
I will learn to identify the trigger
before it leads to a reaction,
therefore making it far easier to
find a solution.
