Understanding Matter and Density Concepts

Matter can exist in three different states: solid, liquid, and gas. In solids, the particles are arranged in a close, regular pattern with little space between them. In liquids, the particles are still quite close together but not in a regular pattern, and there is more space between them. In gases, the particles are very far apart from one another and can move freely over one another in random motion. The density of a substance is defined as its mass per unit volume. A substance will float if its density is less than the density of water, and it will sink if its density is greater than the density of water. Density is important for transporting and storing gases and liquids.

CHAPTER 3: MATTER

MATTER HAS MASS AND OCCUPIES SPACE

1.

Matter is anything that has __________ and occupies ________________.

2.

Everything around us is ________________.

3.

Matter does not exist in _______________.

THREE STATES OF MATTER

1.

Matter is made up of very small _________________.

2.

There are spaces between the particles because they are ________________.

3.

The particles of matter can ________.

4.

DENSITY

1. The density of a substance is defines as the _________________ of __________

contained in the substance for a unit _______________.

DENSITY =

MASS
VOLUME

Unit of density is kg/ m3 or g /cm3

2. The ability of a substance to __________ depends on its density compared to the density
of water.
a. A substance that has a density _______________ than 1.0 g/cm 3 will float in
water.
b. A substance that has a density _______________ than 1.0 g/cm 3 will sink in
water.
3. Example:
i. Density of cork is 0.25 g/cm3
ii. Density of water is 1.0 g/cm3
The density of cork is less than the density of water. Therefore cork floats in water.
The density of copper is more than the density of water. Therefore, copper will

4. The uses of properties of density in everyday life:
a. Storing and transporting gases
b. Transporting _________________ by rivers.
c.

d. ________________________________________________________________.
5. A submarine can float and sink in the sea. Draw the water level in a submarine that made

a. Floats
