The Three Rs:

Making a Difference in Todays World
Back when I was growing up, we were told that the foundation of education was the
Three Rs: Reading, Riting, and
Rithmetic
(perhaps spelling
should have had
higher priority, as
well). Thats all it
will take for kids
to be able to
make a difference
in the world. A
few years later,
we learned a new
set of three Rs:
Reduce, Reuse,
and Recycle.
Again, having an impact on our world required us to attend to this new set of three Rs.
In April, as we move beyond the joy of the Resurrection and follow the mission of
Christ to the ends of the earth, let us re-learn a new set of Rs: Relieve. Reverse. Refill.
Together, these Rs will make an impact beyond our walls and beyond our generation.
Let us join the disciples as we make a difference in our community and around the
world.

Justice Matters would like to update you on a pressing issue-Affordable Homes. Last year we asked city commissioners to
invest in a demonstration project to show how we, as a city,
could make sure people can afford to live in Lawrence. The city
accepted the challenge! And through a collaboration that includes Tenants to Homeowners, Habitat for Humanity, Family
Promise, the Willow Domestic Violence Shelter, and the city,
we will build three permanently affordable homes for women
and children fleeing domestic violence and others moving out
of homelessness. Over their lifetime, we can expect the project
(three new houses) to provide comfortable homes for up to
twenty-six families. This will demonstrate what can be accomplished by a cooperative effort and with the leveraging of a relatively small amount of money, but it is only a drop in the
bucket. The need is great. So Justice Matters will be proposing
to city officials that they scale up this type of investment to fix
this long-standing and worsening problem. If this ministry is to
succeed in making Lawrence a more just community, we need
your help. Please make plans now to attend this years Nehemiah Assembly at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00), Wednesday, April 13, Lied Center. Together we are and will make a
differencelet justice roll on like a [mighty] river (Amos
5:24).

First Baptist Book Club

Our April selection is Trauma and Grace: Theology in a Ruptured World by Serene Jones. The book is both a collection
of stories of people who have endured and survived trauma, and an analysis of how they did it by the grace of
God. Serene Jones will be in Lawrence on April 11 when
we are scheduled to meet for the book discussion. If
enough people enjoyed the book, we may attend her lecture instead. If you have questions about the FBC Book
Club, please contact Peggy Keefe, pegakeefe@[Link], 842-5770.
