Reflection 1: (Letter F)
At 11:00AM, I start my lesson which about the letter F. As every day, I start
the usual routine, which is singing good morning song, greeting children and
remaining the days of the week by singing a song. After that, I sing with the
ABC song as a warm-up. I sing with children and children sing with me. They
observe the symbol of each letter as well from the song video. Then I start to
teach. First, because children like to listen to the story, I create a story about
the letter f. The characters of the story is all start with letter f such as flower,
frog and fish. I draw the story in the board. In addition, ask them questions
as well. I ask them about the letter f and the sound of it. After I finish the
story, in the PowerPoint, I put pictures of the letter f and the characters of
the story. I ask children to say the name of it and the sound of the letter.
Children recognize the letter F and the sound of it. Then, I introduced the
symbol of letter F for children. I gave them a board with markers. Children
start to write the letter F. I went to check if they write it correctly or not. After
that, I let children to do the activities, which are based on their ability. I
create activity for high-level students which is which is worksheet. Children
have to match the objects, which start with letter f. then they have to color
them. Some children did it correct from the first time others did not do it
write until I support them. For medium level students, I make a puzzle for
children. They have to solve the puzzle. I give them a half paper written
inside it the symbol of letter F. They have to complete the paper. I provide for
them another half paper and inside it object which start with letter F.
Children match the objects with the shape of letter f. This activity will be in
pair. For low-level students, I give children scissors with paper. In the paper,
children wrote and trace big letter F. Then, by using scissors, they cut the
shape of letter f. Before they start, I gave them some tips and instruction
about how to use the scissors in the correct way. The things that went well in
my teaching in my instruction and my praise for them. I notice that when I
praise children who did a good job other children try to copy what that child
did. Moreover, my instruction was extremely clear so they understand the
tasks that they have to do. The thing that did not went well is my
management. I could not manage the children. When some boys start to talk,
I did not know how to make them quiet and pay attention. In order to
improve that, I should deal with them strongly and change their places if
they did not stop talking.
Reflection 2: (Color red)
At 7:30AM, I teach for them the color red to communicate this lesson plan
with Ms. Samya stuff. Because yesterday I taught for children, I learned from
my mistakes and I tried to improve my teaching way with children. I sing with
children the morning song and do some movement. Them, I greet them. I
asked them about the days of the week. Then, I start teaching the color red.
First, I showed them a video about the color red. Then, I asked them to tell
me what they can see in the video that have the color red. Some children tell
me rights but others did not knew. After that, I make a little activity with all
of them. I let them to stand up and make a big circle. I taught them about
the game that we count from 1 to 3 then we said red, red and red. After we
say that together, I chose one of them to go and explore any object in the
classroom that have the color red. Students enjoy the game and they have
the ability to recognize the color red from the other colors. When we finished
this game, I gave them a worksheet, which is write their name. For high-level
students, they to Write their name and color it. I gave children pencils. They
have to write their name by their own. After they finish, they color their
name using the red color. I gave them all the different colors; they have to
choose only the red color. For medium level students, they have to Trace and
color childrens name. Each child will trace their name and color it using red
color. For low-level students, they have to Color their name. Children will
color their name using red color. That will help them to recognize their name
in English. The thing that went well is my instruction. I gave them a clear
instructions supporting with examples to make the activities clear for them. I
knew that because all children understand my activities and do it
successfully. In contrast, the thing that went wrong is my management. I lose
the management control of the classroom when we went from the activity 1
to the activity 2. In order to improve that, I should make special techniques
when its transition time such as ringing a bell, sing a song or signs.
Reflection 3: (Shapes)
On Tuesday, I taught a math lesson for students which about the rectangle
shape. I start my lesson by my regular routine including the good morning
song and days of the week. I think that giving children a specific routine that
they follow it every day is extremely beneficial for their emotional aspect.
They have expectation of what they will do each day. That will lead to make
them comfortable and secure. As what the theorist Krashen said that when
children feel happy and comfortable, they would learn quickly. Thus, the
routine is the key for childrens education. After doing the routine, I started
my lesson by showing children a song video about the rectangle shape. I
taught them about the name of the shape, the features of the rectangle and
the correct way to draw it. Once I finished teaching, I moved them to do the
different activities by their own. The reason why I gave children different
activities for each level is because that I wanted from them to be more in
depending on themselves. I gave them the basic information so they will
complete learning by doing individually. I observed and asked them during
the activities. Finally, I evaluate them to check if they understand.
If I will teach this lesson again, I would like to do one strategy that I did which
is exercise. Before I started my lesson, I did some exercise with children
because I wanted from them to be full of vigor and vitality during the lesson.
I believe that when children do exercise before they start the lesson, their
mind will be open and fresh. Thus, they will be more concentrate when I will
teach them. Whereas, if children did not do exercise, their mind will not be
prepare for the lesson. They will be sleepy instead of being concentrating
with me. Additionally, doing exercise will improve their gross and fine motor
skills when they move their whole body and fingers. They enjoyed doing
exercise since they were participating in releasing their energy. On top of
that, I would like to do the same activity that I did it for high-level group. The
activity require from children to cut the papers into different size of
rectangles. Then, from these rectangles, they have to create any picture that
they want. This activity will encourage the cognitive aspect of children. They
will be use their imagination in order to create a creative work from
rectangles that they made through cutting papers. According to the theorist
Piaget, he believe that giving children in preoperational stage a solving
problem activity will help their cognitive skills to develop. Through this
activity, children will try to figure out how they can cut the papers into
different size of rectangles. On the other hand, I have weakness that I want
to change it in different way. I want to do my transition differently in the next
time. My transition was poor. I used a bell as a transition method. I told
children that when I will ring the bell, they have to stand in line and move to
the different areas in the classroom. However, when I rang the bell, they
automatically ran to the areas. It was completely unorganized. Through my
evaluation to the students, it shows me that I achieved my learning
outcomes successfully. When I were evaluating them, most of the children
understand the features of the rectangle.
There was one good surprise happened to me in my lesson that most of the
children did understand the lesson. Although they were extremely noisy,
they learn about the rectangle. That made me happy because I was worrying
that they did not understand the lesson. However, the most disappointing
moment that I faced during this lesson is that my classroom management
was poor and weak. Because of my transition was not effective and
beneficial, I did not knew how to control the classroom. I used on of my
classroom management strategy which is clapping hand in order to make
children stop from doing noise. Unfortunately, it did not work. They did not
listen to me. Therefore, they kept doing noise like talking to their friends,
talking loud about something else and go outside the classroom without
taking a permeation from me. Overall, I felt that I did a great job even though
I had some weaknesses in my teaching style. I was satisficed about my
performance. I faced some struggle in managing children and using
transition but the most important is that at the end of the lesson, most
children acquire the right knowledge in my lesson. That made me happy.
Furthermore, my lesson was successful since I achieved my learning
outcomes. I finished at the time and I gave children all the activities that I
planned before the time of the lesson end. I will try to improve my way in
teaching and change my weaknesses to be my strength.
Reflection 4: (Number 1 and 2)
I taught a lesson for children who are in KG2 about number 1 and 2. I
managed my time by starting the lesson with warming up the children via
song about counting from 1 to 10. This helped children to prepare their
mental aspect for the lesson, which created positive atmosphere to practice
in counting numbers. Then, I explained the lesson for children. I taught about
the both meaning for number 1 and 2, which are concrete concept and
abstract concept. Once I finished, I moved the children to do the
differentiation activities by their own. Finally, I evaluated them to make sure
that they understand and acquire the knowledge.
If I taught this lesson again, I would do the same strategy that I apply during
the lesson. This strategy is reward system. I believe that reward system is an
effective and fundamental way to control childrens behavior in the
classroom. According to the theorist Skinner, He assumed that children
would do the good behavior when we reinforce that behavior by praising and
rewarding them. I rewarded children who behave well and respond with me
by giving star stickers. The reason why I want to apply this strategy when I
teach the lesson again is that rewarding children will make childrens selfesteem high and increase their emotional aspect. Reward system is
encouraging and promoting students to participate in the classroom with
their positive behavior. Besides that, other children tried to imitate the good
behavior instead of bad behavior in order to be stickers. These stickers can
visually remind young children of their achievements, which will promote
them to keep the positive behavior and participate during the lesson.
Furthermore, I would like to do the clay activity again because this activity
gives children the potential to make number 1 and 2 using their fine motor
skills by clay. Therefore, children will be prepare and able to write the
number 1 and 2. It will improve their hand writing skills as well. Moreover,
through this activity, children will understand both concrete and abstract for
number 1 and 2. Concrete when they make 2 or 1 object with clay while
abstract when they create the symbol of number 1 and 2 using clay. In
contrast, if I will teach this lesson again, I would improve my way in giving
instruction for children. Giving instruction is very significant because that can
lead children to do anything in a right way. When I was explaining the
different activities for children, they did not understand what they have to
do. I did not deliver the concept of the activities because I did not illustrate
for them a clear sample to understand what they have to do. However, I
achieved my learning outcomes successfully even with the weakness in my
teaching style. I knew that I reached my learning outcomes since I did the
evaluation at the end of my lesson for children. They were able to recognize
both number 1 and 2. In addition, they were able to write number 1 and 2.
They were able to discover 1 and 2 objects in their surrounding areas as well.
There was one good surprise from the lesson which is the children were
participating when I ask questions. Because of giving them stickers as
reward to their behaviors, they were trying to do the good behaviors. During
the circle time, they did not make any noise. They were completely paying
attention to my teaching the number 1 and 2. That was amazing surprise to
me, which made me glad. I understand that reward is the most influential
strategy that can lead to be professional teacher in controlling childrens
behavior. Whereas, there I faced disappointing moment when I gave children
the activities. Because my instruction was poor and week, they did not
understand when I taught them how to use the scissors in the right way.
They cut the papers in random way. That caused me lost the control of the
classroom, which made me extremely disappointed. My general feeling about
this lesson is satisfaction. I am proud of myself because I achieved my
learning outcomes. Even though had some weaknesses in some part of my
teaching, I am happy that I knew my weaknesses because I can change my
ways in teaching and improve it to the better. In my opinion, I think my
lesson was clearly successful. My children showed me that it was successful
since they understood the number 1 and 2. At the end of the lesson, they
were able to recognize number 1 and 2. They can tell the difference between
them.
Reflection 5: (Letter S)
On Tuesday, I taught a lesson for children a lesson, which was about the
letter s. I did my regular routine, which was greeting children, singing good
morning song and review the days of the week. Children were participating
with me that shows me that they were comfortable and happy since they
were expected of what they will do with me. According to Krashen who is a
behavioral theorist, he mentioned that when children feel comfortable and
secure, they would learn positively. Thus, that shows me that they will learn
the lesson positively. After I finished my routine, I start my lesson by warming
up. I turned on a video about the sounds of the letters. Children sang with
me and they were able to pronounce the sound of the letters. Then, I start to
give children some activity. I gave them an activity which called show me the
card. In this activity, I provide for each child 5 cards that include on them
pictures of objects that start will letter s. I asked children to arrange the 4
cards in the ground and them once they hear the name of the object, they
raise that card and show it to me. All children did this activity successfully.
Next, I create a story for them. The story was about the monster letter s is
hungry and he want to eat only the objects, which start with letter s. In the
PowerPoint, I put in each slide 2 pictures. One start with letter s and the
other start with different letter. I asked children individually to tell me which
picture start with letter s. I emerge technology in my lesson because children
like to learn through technology. After that, I gave children the chance to
write the letter s. I gave them cards which is written the letter s. First, I gave
them instruction that they have to trace the letter s then they have to write
it by their own. All of children wrote the letter s correctly, except one girl
wrote flipped of letter s. I support her then she knew how to write. Once, all
children finished, I divided them intro 3 groups to give them differentiation
activities. For high-level student, I give students a worksheet. First, they
write the letter S. Then, there is picture of garden in the paper include the
letter S and P. They search on the letter S and circle it. Once they finish, they
color the picture. For medium level group, I give students a worksheet. First,
they will write the letter S. Then, there are pictures of objects, which start
with letter S or P. They have to match the objects, which start with letter S
with the letter S. Once they finish, they color the objects that start with letter
S. for low-level students, I give them a Snake craft activity. I will give
students a paper. They have to write the letter S so big. Then, they will color
it. Then, they will design it in order to make a snake include the eyes of
snake and the tongue. My strength in the lesson was my instruction. I gave
children an clear instruction. I knew that since they did the activities quickly
and easily. Moreover, I praise children, which reinforce them to participate.
However, my weakness was in pronouncing some sounds of the words. I
pronounce some words wrongly such as instead of the sound /ffff/ I said /fa/.
In order to improve that, I have to practice in pronouncing the sounds of the
letters.
Reflection 6: (Letter M)
I designed a story about the letter M using my imagination. At the beginning,
I greet the students using good morning song. This song consider as their
routine at the beginning of English class. I start to sing and all children start
to sing with me and copy my movement. Then, I remind them about the days
of the week by singing a song. When we finished, before the warm-up, I
remind students about the letter that they took by showing them pictures of
it. Children tell me the name of the letters and the sound of it. It was very
successful because children were participating with me. Then, I start my
lesson. I make for them the letter M as a story. I bring a box and cover it with
the letter M. Then, I said that it is our new letter. They did not know the name
of this letter. Therefore, I start to teach them this letter. I teach them how to
pronounce and recognize the letter M. Then, I tell them a story that I created
it supporting with picture to make it clear for them. During the story, which is
about the man and 3 little monkeys, I emerge math and color also in the
story. The thing that went well is that all children like the idea and engage
with my story. They wanted to participate by answering the name of the
pictures. I was using praise strategy a lot, which made children, listen to me
and follow my rules. The reason why I praise them a lot when they did
something good is because what Skinner said. According to him, he claimed
that children will do a specific behavior if they get reinforcement and praise.
After I finished telling the story, I make a small activity for students, which is
puzzle of the characters of the story, which start with letter M including man,
monkey, milk, mouth, music and moon. First, I give them instruction about
how to do the puzzle and then I give them the materials. They start do the
puzzle. Some children did the puzzle quickly. However, other did not know
how to do the activity. The thing that went wrong is my instruction because it
was not clear enough for them. Next time, I will improve my teaching in
giving instruction. I believe that this is a good experience in teaching
children because when I do mistakes, I learn and improve my teaching style.
