Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
Our film, “The Field Trip,” we would see as being distributed through
mainstream media companies, such as Universal Studios. Other companies,
such as Working Title Films could produce my media product as they are
linked with Universal Studios for distributing and/or co-financing. My media
product would have English actors that are well known. However, our film
should sell well in the United Kingdom but possibly not so well in the United
States. After doing research into what the US like about English films, they like
either the snobbish British family (The Princess Diaries (2001)) or they like,
London based hoodlum (This Is England (2006)). This tells us that different
countries like different types of genre and also have a fixed perception of what
other countries are like.
When researching into the films Working Title Films have created, I found that
they all are set in the UK with British Actors. All the films stay around British
humor in all the films. The films they make range from a large genre but do not
specify horror as one of their genres. There are not many horror films made in
the United Kingdom, however, Shaun of the Dead (2004) is a horror film but
with the subgenre of comedy, as it is a spoof horror film.
My media product would best be released in the run up to Halloween.
Halloween is a good time of year for horror films because they can gather lots
of viewing; therefore profit can be made at cinemas. I feel that there is a gap in
the filming market that can now be filled with our film. Our film is aimed at the
15+ category age group. Our film is based on teenagers of this age group on a
field trip where the viewing audience of 15+ could easily relate to as they may
also be going on field trips themselves.
My media product will show trailers to advertise our film on TV and cinemas.
When it is being shown on TV, it will only be shown after 9pm to comply with
censorship regulations. When being shown in cinemas, it will only be shown on
films that are rated 15+. Our film would be distributed on DVD and Blu-ray 16
weeks after being released in the cinema. Our film will be available to
download from iTunes 1 month after selling them on DVD/Blu-ray. The film
would be sold in well-known DVD stores such as HMV and could be bought
online from Amazon.co.uk or Play.com.
