- be able to interact with their fellow classmate during dribbling games

Introduction/ Warm up: (5 min)

Set up quads: [ students stand in order of birthday (number, not month)

then number them off 1-4]

Today we are going to start our unit on basketball, but before we start
there are a few rules we need to keep in mind for everyones safety.
General rules:
If anyone is talking basketballs are held tightly
At no time should a basketball be lying on the floor
Keep your head up
Ball handling drills
Teacher will let one quad at a time get a basketball. Once they return they
will sit with basketball in lap and await instructions.
Teacher will lead/model ball handling skills for students to emulate.
Students make a large circle around the center, to ensure that they can
see the teacher and the teacher can see them.
Before we start dribbling the basketball we have to warm up and get
comfortable handling a basketball.
1. Ball Slam: in a standing position slam the ball back and forth using
your hands

Choose seven
students to collect
formative
assessment from
using a checklist.

by the end week
formative
assessment had
been collected for
each student)
Equipment:
1 basketball per
student
Safety
Considerations:

2. Tipping: hold the ball as high as possible overhead with elbows

extended and standing on your toes. Tip the ball back and forth
with your fingertips
3. Funnel: same sequence as tipping except this time continue to tip
the ball while bringing it down in front of the body to the floor and
back overhead
4. Neck circle: in a standing position, circle the ball continuously
around the neck exchanging hands behind the neck. Reverse
direction. (Keep head up).
5. Circle body: In standing position, circle the ball continuously around
the body and legs exchanging hands behind the body. Reverse
direction. (Keep head up).
6. Leg circles: in a stride stance, circle the ball continuously around
the front leg. Reverse direct. Do the same sequence with the other
leg forward.
7. Figure 8s: In a parallel stance and knees bent bring the ball in and
out of the legs in a figure 8 fashion. Reverse direction (Keep head
up).

Learning Activities/Teaching Strategies

Dribbling
Lets talk about dribbling. What should you keep in mind when you
dribble?
Critical Elements of dribbling:
1) Eyes up
2) Use your finderpads--not your fingertips
3) Keep ball at your side for control
4) Keep ball at waist level or lower
Red-Light, Green-Light Dribbling (10 min)
- Students practice basic start and stop signals, as well as dribbling
skill in basketball. Its the typical red means stop, green mean go
game with the added difficulty of dribbling the basketball (but not
double dribble)
- Instructional Notes:
- Control is more important than speed
- Keep head up
- Yellow light as a warning or slow-down phase
- To stop: ball tight to side
- Anyone still moving goes back to the start- or if they lose control.

Dribble elimination or tag (5 min)
Now we are going to take our dribbling skills that we have just worked
on and play a game. While playing this game remember the important
elements of dribbling what we discussed.
All players have a ball. Stat by giving students 2 min to dribble around the
gym. Once the game starts the goal is to attempt to tag or knock away
other students basketballs. Restrictions can be placed on the playing
area (full court, half court, and key). Eliminated players continue to
dribble on sideline. Use both hands and execute various moves to exclude
teammates.
Instructional Pointers:
Head up while dribbling
Protect the ball with non-dribbling hand

Shooting (5 min)
Free shooting

Closure/Cool Down (3 min)

Students line up in quads.
Review the critical elements of dribbling:
With a partner list the critical element of dribbling. Give me a number
out of four of how many you can remember.
1) Eyes up
2) Use your finderpads--not your fingertips
3) Keep ball at your side for control
4) Keep ball at waist level or lower
Additional Activities: (if needed)
Buffalo Run
Divide students into quads six and have them move through the activity
space in single file, following a leaders walking, jogging or running pace.
On a signal, have the students at the back of each line run to the front
and become the leader.
Instructional Pointers: head up while dribbling, Students may vary the
speed, pattern, and direction on the line.
