KEEP ‘EM COMING BACK

Align your Team with your
Philosophy
Challenges in Creating
Organizational Culture
• We live in a world of technology and
instant gratification.
My Space, Xbox, Playstation, Game Boy,
Wii, the internet, cell phones, texting, TV
[Sponge Bob, Pimp My Ride, MTV, Jerry
Springer,etc…], You Tube, IPODS,
movies, music, etc…
Challenges in Creating Organizational
Culture Continued…

• The ability to inspire.

Divorce, drugs, gangs, single
parents, the need for duel income for
parents, crime, war, economy,
unemployment, teen sex & pregnancy,
Step Parents, Step Children Foster
Children…
Challenges in Creating Organizational
Culture Continued…

• Pride & Respect

Do we grant to much latitude to our children?

Do we, as adults give into gratifying our children

without demanding effort?

We want our kids to “have it better than we did.”

Are we sacrificing our core principles and crippling our

kids?
Be A HERO! Walk The Line!
• Kids are starving for Structure &
Discipline
Your program may be the only positive escape
from themselves.
Seize that opportunity to translate football into
life skills.
Every practice, every game is their opportunity
to legally release aggression.
Every practice, every game is their opportunity
to be a part of something special…
THEIR TEAM!
Coaches are the keepers of this idea.
Be A HERO! Walk The Line!
Cont…
• I DON’T “DO PIZZA”
My job as a coach is not to delve out quarters to
players for video games at the “pizza place” after
a practice or games.

My job is not to go spill beers with “Johnny’s

parents after practice or games.

My job as a coach does not entail attending

weekend BBQ’s with parents and players.
MAINTAIN YOUR MYSTIQUE
• FRATENIZATION IS A KILLER
This is a tempting trap that will back fire on you.
A social environment with parents/players will give
you a persona of “Hey Coach does it. It must be
OK.”
EYES ARE ALWAYS ON YOU WAITING TO
CRITISIZE!
You can “keep your ear to the street” by going to
your player’s other sporting events & school
activities. They love seeing you support!
COACHING YOUR OWN KID
• “DADDY BALL”
- Set & enforce the ground rules between
you and your child.
- On the field you are “Coach”. You must both put
the team first and be as consistent with your son
as you are with the rest of the team. Assign
another coach/coaches on the team to your son if
need be. This is highly effective to harness
emotion between a coach and his son. It also
illustrates to other parents that you are not playing
favorites.
- Once you dismiss the team you are “Dad”
again and your son is the most important person to
you.
SANDWICH CRITISCISM WITH
CORRECTION AND COMPLIMENT
• EXAMPLE:
You call a run play through the 6 hole and
“Johnny” hits it perfectly for 12 yards but
the ball is stripped from behind.
• REMEDY:
Correction: WE (NOT YOU) have to secure the
ball with 4 points of pressure…
Criticism: WE cannot afford to give the ball up!
Compliment: That’s the way WE want to hit that
hole though. Nice job Johnny.
TOOLS TO KEEP ‘EM COMING
BACK
• Give a starving man a fish and you feed him for a day…
Teach him how to fish, and you feed him forever…
Working more with your challenged athletes will only
strengthen your position depth for the team.
Encourage the gifted athletes to help with this endeavor…
That’s what leaders do!
• RESULT:
The challenged athlete will develop confidence and a
sense of camaraderie.
“ENCOURAGE… DON’T DISCOURAGE”
JAYHAWK CERTIFICATES of
EXCELLENCE & APPRECIATION
• It is human nature to want and need
recognition.
• Go out of your way to recognize parents that
contribute their time.
• Recognize Board members for their time and
efforts.
• If your program doesn’t have the funds to
provide certificates or other material
accolades, it doesn’t cost anything to say
thank you.
“WE PLAY LIKE WE PRACTICE”
• Reward Effort In Practice
- More playtime on game day.
- Verbally recognize a “minimum play” player’s
effort. This will stimulate “starters” to stay on
their toes.
- Cut a practice by 15 minutes for outstanding
team effort.
- End your practice with “Trojan Ball”, Tug O War,
“Bull in the Ring”, “Relay Races”, etc…
• RESULT: EFFORT = REWARD
REWARD YOUR TEAM FOR GAME
DAY EFFORT GOALS
• REWARD IDEAS

Challenge the team by:

- Victory vs. a tough opponent = Pizza Party
- Shutting out your opponent = -------------------
- 4 Offensive Scores = ------------------------------
- Special Teams Score = ---------------------------

• RESULT:
Teamwork & Shared Values separate winners from
losers.
DEFENSIVE EFFORT REWARD
SKULL & BONES
O-LINE “HERCULES” 250-299 TOTAL YARDS
O-LINE “ATLAS” 300+ TOTAL YARDS
SCORE AWARD
FUNDRAISING
• Money is an important element!!!
Spirit gear, equipment bags, team banquet,
travel, administrative costs, game/highlight
video, etc…
• WE DON’T SELL CANDY or CARDS
We go after sponsors from family, friends, &
businesses. This teaches a child the value
of selfless work ethic.
• The 2008 JayHawks raised $14,323.00
RESULT: EFFORT + WORK EHTIC= FUN!!!
