H. M. Berger (Berger, 1955) has suggested approximate non-linear equations for
rectangular and circular plates. Further, his results have been generalized for orthotropic
plates, membranes, shallow spherical and cylindrical shells (Bucco et al., 1978,
Grigolyuk et al., 1981). These equations have also been used for solving of dynamic
problems. The validity of the Berger equations and their areas of applicability have been
repeatedly discussed in the literature. Berger neglected the second invariant of the strain
tensor in the elastic energy expression on the basis of numerical data, which
demonstrated its slight effect on the stress state in bending. Numerous publications were
devoted to the discussion of the validity of the Berger hypothesis. Its direct application
leads to wrong equations for the shells. Some authors have suggested certain ideas
concerning the application of the averaging technique; however, they have not
developed it or they have developed it in forms that were unsatisfactory for the
applications.
We have obtained non-contradictory approximate equations for the dynamics of
shallow shells with curvature radii R, and Ry and planar sizes a and &, using the
averaging technique which was developed by G. Whitham (Whitham, 1974, Luke,
1966) and Shamrovskii (Shamrovskii, 1979).

the limit R, => 02,.R, > © (or: R, -3 9) for y-independence (or x-independence) we
“obtain the equations for a shallow arch. At last, passing to the linear. case, we get the
conventional Jinear equations for a shallow shell. This circumstance is an advantage of
the’ system (1) in comparison ‘with the system obtained previously using the “Berger
hypothesis”.
