12-Story Building Design with ETABS

This document outlines a structural steel design project to design a 12-story building using ETABS software. It lists the group members and instructor, and provides design loads including superimposed dead load, live load, cladding, and wind speed. It states that the American Institute of Steel Construction Load and Resistance Factor Design method will be used. The document notes that the project will involve a step-by-step design process, sample manual calculations, and a discussion of analysis results and potential optimizations to member sizing selected by the software.

: INTRODUCTION
Our Project is to design a 12 story building using a

program called Etabs , using specific codes and standers.

Design loads:
Superimposed dead load: 2.5 kN/m2
Live load: 3.5 kN/m2
Cladding: choose suitable value.
Wind: Building located in Musaffah with 100 mph design

wind speed.

Design code: American Institute of

Steel Construction (AISC) LRFD method

DISCUSSION OF ANALYSIS RESULTS

We find that the soft ware is choosing a cross sections more than needed ,

for example : C13 story 1 :

From the manual calculations we find that the

section W10 X 77 is satisfied but the software

give us the section W12X96 (W310X143) , so
the we must make an optimization to the cross
sections of the ones wich is given by the soft
ware

Summary
Engineers are humans and they can make mistakes, ETABS
and engineering soft wares in general are a big asset to
engineers because they are very accurate and dont do
mistakes. Also, engineering soft wares can save engineers a
lot of time by adding, analyzing and designing buildings and
other models.
We didnt have a lot of problems in our projects but we did
we asked the teacher assistants for some help to guide us
through things that were a little confusing. In the end we
have learnt a lot while doing this project and that helped us
get more experience in using ETABS that we are pretty sure
will be that we will be using a lot in the near future.
