THEA 140

Play Analysis for Theatre - Fall 2013

ANALYSIS PAPER

Please construct three-to-five-page analysis paper devoted to a play from Plays from the
Contemporary Theatre not read as part of regular classwork.
Your paper should include (but is certainly not limited to):

A one-to-two sentence statement of the plays genre and your reason(s) for
categorizing it in that genre.

A brief description of the opening scene which makes note of A) the situation
(stasis) of the world of the play as the play opens, and B) the inciting incident
which propels the characters into action.

Briefly describe or state the type(s) of plot structure which form the play, and
why you think the play is so structured.

Describe at least three (3) passages or points of exposition in the earlier scenes of
the play without which later action in the play cannot occur and/or does not make
sense. Be sure to note or indicate the action(s) thus illuminated by the earlier
exposition.

Describe the overall throughline of one scene in the play by citing all key beats
and linking them logically to describe the course of the scenes action (if you
choose a one-act play, find and link the key beats for the whole piece).

Choose one character and chart that characters throughline of action in the play
(its not necessary that you trace all actions or beats for the character, but provide
a sufficiently thorough description of the characters journey through events in
the play to make the evolution of the character or changes in the character clear
to me).

State the way(s) in which the last action of the play is connected to the first
action of the play (Im not asking you to chart the actions which link through the
play, rather to make a connection and tell me why or how the last action of the
play is a logical or illogical outcome of the first action in the play).

As always, if you have questions regarding the work, or would like my feedback while youre working,
please e-mail me at [email protected].
Analysis due FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11 AT 8:0 A.M., on paper AND sent as an e-mail attachment to my
address above. Please format your attachment as richtext.
