Mrs.

Kings Class Outline

First grade will be a new and great challenge for your child. From more responsibilities and increased independence to a
rigorous work load, your child will be expected to conform to the first grade standards. Please encourage and support
your child on a regular basis as he/she will need assistance in adjusting to the transition from kindergarten to first grade
curriculum.

Arrival Procedures
Students may begin entering the classroom at 7:30 A.M. Upon arrival students should unpack the contents of their book
bag. Lunches and snacks should be put in their proper place; homework should be placed in the homework tray; reading
books should be checked in and returned to the appropriate basket; notes from parents should be given to the teacher.
Once unpacked, students should begin morning assignments.

Daily Instruction
The instructional day begins at 8:00 A.M. It consists of math, literacy, writing, science, and social studies. During math,
the students are engaged in hands-on activities designed to promote critical thinking and problem solving skills. The
Engage NY modules and Investigations series utilizes a spiraling method to introduce and review skills specified by the
Common Core Standards.
Literacy is taught using a balanced literacy approach and incorporates some phonics components of the Imagine It!
Reading Program along with other resources to provide a balanced program. Balanced literacy addresses numerous
reading skills, writing skills, and word work (through the use of sound/spelling rules).
The writing program encourages students to write through the use of journals and mini-lessons that teach sentence
structure, proper grammar and mechanics, and the structure of various writing genres (types).
Science and social studies will be integrated throughout each week. Science will focus on using inquiry and the scientific
process. Social studies will explore communities.
In addition to classroom instruction, there are also Essential classes: Music (Mon.), Technology (Tues.), P.E. (Wed.),
Media (Th.), and Art (Fri).

Supplies
Students are expected to come to school with the necessary materials needed to be successful each day. These
materials include the signed Agenda, reading books, homework, and at least two sharpened pencils. Many of the supplies
have been provided, however, there are some additional supplies that are needed.

Homework

Students will have homework on a regular basis. It may be assigned daily or weekly and will be written in the Agenda or
provided on a calendar. Students will have a homework journal and most assignments will be completed in the journal
according to set procedures. Be sure to use the next available page in the journal for homework; do not skip pages. If a
separate worksheet is given it should be returned in the front pocket of the binder. The expectation is that all students
complete and return the work on time; the journal must be returned daily. All homework is due the next school day,
unless otherwise specified. Students will periodically earn blue paws for completing and returning homework on time.

Agendas and Work Folders

The Agenda will be sent home daily. Parents should sign the Agenda after checking the homework. The Agenda will
occasionally contain correspondence about school events/activities. Some graded student work will be sent home
periodically, but most work will be kept at school in your childs portfolio. Parents should review the work sent then sign
and return the empty folder ASAP.

Student Behavior
All students are responsible for conducting themselves in a manner that promotes a positive learning environment.
Respect and consideration for others, adults as well as children, is always expected. Notes in the agenda will provide
information about daily behavior. Our school is using the PBIS system (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). It
is very similar to the color ladder/ticket system. However, the only colors being utilized to represent behavior are green
(good to excellent day), yellow (needed warnings and reminders), and red 1, 2, and 3 (continued to make poor choices;
could not/did not improve behavior throughout the day). Students also have the opportunity to earn blue paws to show
that they have been caught showing positive behavior. All students have the opportunity to earn blue paws regardless
of the color that represents their classroom behavior. Earning a blue paw does not necessarily mean that the student
had a good day, but they did show positive behavior at some point during the day. Students collect blue paws to cash in
for rewards. If you have any questions about the behavior system, please feel free to ask.

FREE BREAKFAST AND FREE LUNCH

This year breakfast and lunch are free for ALL students. The cafeteria will open around 7:30 A.M. and will stop serving
in enough time for students to get to class before the late bell rings. STUDENTS MUST GET A FULL BREAKFAST IN
ORDER FOR THE BREAKFAST TO BE FREE. They cannot choose just 1 or 2 items from the menu. The same applies
for lunch.

Lunch and Snacks

Our scheduled time for lunch is 10:45 A.M. 11:15 A.M. Parents will be notified when changes to that time are made.
Please be sure to send a healthy snack with your child every day. It is necessary for him/her to stay energized
throughout the day. Snacks can range from crackers or a scoop of cereal to an extra sandwich and a drink. Candy, sodas,
and canned or bottled drinks are not allowed.

Transportation
It is necessary for the parent/guardian to call the school or write a note if a student is to go home by a different mode
than usual. No student will be dismissed without direct parental consent. This is a school wide policy and protects the
safety of the student.

Communication from Home

If you are corresponding about a matter that needs to be addressed immediately and/or early in the day, please write a
separate note (not in the Agenda); time does not always allow me to check each Agenda before instruction begins .

Other Notes and Reminders

Please be sure to read and respond accordingly to all notes and papers sent home with your child.
Encourage your child to be on his/her best behavior at school. We are working to provide the best positive
learning environment for all.
Daily reading books will be issued inside of a plastic bag or protector to prevent damage. They should be
returned in the same manner. If a bag or book is lost or damaged, it should be replaced. Also, books should be
returned daily, even if the student has not finished reading them.
